- PRODUCT: SMART-ED DX7 (FREELY DISTRIBUTABLE DEMO)

-
- Synth editors for the Amiga seem to be in short supply, but it
- doesn't have to be this way...
-
- During 1991, I bought a Yamaha TX7 FM expander, and soon got bored
- of the 32 sounds which were stored on board. The extra 16 sounds
- on my music-x disk kept me occupied for about 15 minutes, and I
- soon realised that if I was going to get anything decent out of my
- TX, I was going to have to create my own sounds. However, as
- anyone with a TX7 would know, you cannot edit sounds on a TX7 -
- you can only do this over midi. The only editor I had was the
- generic hexadecimal editor on music-x which drove me MAAAD! and so
- I set about writing Smart-ED DX7, an easy to use screen editor for
- the Yamaha DX7 series synthesizers.
-
- Smart-ED is compatible with all Yamaha 6 operator 32 algorithm
- synthesizers, and may be used as a powerful librarian/editor and
- voice management tool with any DX7, DX7-II, DX5, DX1, TX7, TX816,
- TX216 etc.
-
- The full version of Smart-ED allows you to receive and store 16
- single voices as a library, each of which may be edited or
- printed. You can also receive and store up to 4x32 performance and
- 4x32 voice memory dumps (i.e. snapshot the memory of 4 DX7 type
- synths). A function editor allows you to adjust pitch bend range,
- portamento etc.
-
- This crippled demo has some of these features removed, since it is
- only designed to give you a 'taste' of what you can do with the
- full version.
-
- In particular, "Load", "Save", "Suspend" and "Receive Voice" have
- been disabled; when you start up, the DX7 "INIT VOICE" is
- automatically loaded to give you something to play with...
- Unlike many demos, I have not employed a Timeout since with the
- four items missing, it is not possible to make reasonable use of
- the librarian/editor.
-
-
- Instruction Summary
-
- You will find that most of the features in the librarian/editor are
- immediately obvious, but it will help to scan through the
- following at least once.
-
- Before You Run The Editor...
-
- Smart-ED uses the Tool Types of its icon to set certain defaults.
- You may change these by choosing "Info" from the workbench menu.
- The tool types section contains a list of instructions of the
- form:
-
- PARAMETER=VALUE
-
- See your workbench manual for more information on Tool-Types
- The tool types used by Smart-ED DX7 are outlined below
-
- BULK1=channel number for bulk memory 1
- BULK2=channel number for bulk memory 2
- BULK3=channel number for bulk memory 3
- BULK4=channel number for bulk memory 4
- channel number is a number from 1 to 16, which
- selects the device number for each memory in the
- bulk manager
-
- CHANNEL=default transfer channel number for the librarian
-
- DEVICE=name of the serial.device
- Normally you should not set this
-
- LIBRTOOL=default tool to be used for saved projects
- In the demo, this is meaningless since you can't
- save libraries...
-
- PRINTTOOL=default tool for saved voice printouts
- set this to your more or equivalent
-
- UNIT=serial device unit number
- Normally you don't set this.
-
- ECHO=ON/OFF
- sets whether midi data echo is on or off by default.
- You can change this once the program is running by
- using a menu
-
- PRINT=ALL/SINGLE
- sets whether the print option prints all voices in
- the library, or the current voice only.
-
- AUTO=ON/OFF
- sets whether auto-send in the editors is on or off
- by default. (Default is on)
-
-
- Librarian screen:
-
- This is the first screen you enter. In the crippled demo, this
- contains the "Demonstration Library" with one voice (INIT VOICE)
- loaded. You can perform all operations on the voice, but you
- cannot save your work, or load a new library.
-
- The project menu contains
-
- New resets the librarian
-
- Load (disabled)
-
- Save (disabled)
-
- Print print to disk or printer according to the
- sub-menu note: If your printer does not support
- extended typefaces, you should select print to
- disk, and make the filename PRT: (this is the
- default filename) to avoid the name line in the
- printout being misaligned
-
- About brings up my contact address
-
- Quit exits the demo
-
- The Entry Move menu contains
-
- Un-Delete Un-deletes a deleted entry
-
- Copy -> X copies the current entry to one of the two copy
- buffers
-
- Paste X -> copies one of the two copy buffers to the
- current entry
-
- Delete deletes the current entry
-
-
- The Control menu contains
-
- Midi-Echo switches the data echo on or off. When on, all
- data at the midi in port is duplicated at the
- midi out port
-
- Suspend (disabled)
-
-
- Keyboard shortcuts:
-
- Cursor up/down previous/next current entry
-
- F1 display the two copy buffer contents
-
