  2. Tau, version 1.20

  4. Desktop graph preparation software. Tau generates publication-quality graphs
  5. in the form of Draw files, ready to import into your favourite word-processor
  6. or DTP. A data worksheet (16 columns by 2048 rows) can be filled by keying-
  7. in, importing from a file, and/or calculation. You determine line patterns
  8. and thicknesses, text positioning and font sizes, etc. The data worksheet can
  9. be redimensioned, if you would prefer more rows of data for example.

  16. and copyright owner. You may not change or remove any part of Tau without my
  17. approval. However, you may use, copy and distribute it freely, as long as

  19. unaltered (including this file). You use this software entirely at your own
  20. risk; I accept no responsibility for any consequence of use. Mind you, I
  21. wouldn't describe it as being particularly dangerous . . .

  27. * The size of the data worksheet has been doubled (default 2048 rows and
  28.   16 columns).
  29. * The dimensions of the worksheet can be changed by the user, provided the
  30.   total number of cells does not exceed 2048x16, and the number of columns
  31.   does not exceed 64.
  32. * The internal format of the TauFile and TauStyle files has been changed
  33.   to accommodate the resizable worksheet. Old format files are compatible
  34.   with the new version of Tau.
  35. * The "Plot (many)" option allows the user to change the plot styles of
  36.   a number of columns in one go.

  52. I wrote Tau because I needed to prepare x-y graphs for publication in
  53. scientific journals and reports. The alternative was a PC, Harvard Graphics™,
  54. and sticky tape. Hence it is geared towards the production of a relatively
  55. small number of graphs with the maximum of user control over such niggly
  56. things as line thicknesses and dash patterns. Of course the results still
  57. leave scope for improvement, but that can always be done in !Draw. Note also
  58. the complete lack of junk such as pie charts and the like - if you want pie
  59. charts, you are probably in advertising or marketing, so go use Harvard :-).

  61. Tau is written in BBC Basic V on a 2Mb Acorn A4000 computer with RISC OS 3.1.
  62. I have tried it out with RISC OS 2 and it seems to work OK - the problem
  63. with the Save dialogue box has been fixed.

  65. This version of Tau is bug-ridden and incomplete. I finished writing Tau in
  66. September 1993, but didn't release it until August 1994 because of its
  67. general bugginess. However, it does all that I want it to, after a fashion,
  68. and I have very little time to improve it. If you have any constructive
  69. criticism, bug reports, or suggestions for features you think would be
  70. useful, please get in touch.
