  4. This application is PD - you may copy it freely, subject to the conditions
  5. shown later in this document.

  7. Introduction
  8. ------------
  9. Do_Word allows you to do a crossword on screen. A number of sample files
  10. are provided in the directory 'Cross'.
  11.  
  12. Using Do_Word
  13. -------------
  14. Load in the normal RISC-OS way - the main display will open. Drag a sample
  15. file onto the window, and the grid will be displayed. You can either see
  16. the clues in one large window (reopen by clicking menu over the main display)
  17. or by clicking and HOLDING down the left mouse button on a numbered box. To
  18. type in a word move the red box outline with the keyboard arrow keys to
  19. where you want to start, or click with the mouse.

  21. Printing
  22. --------
  23. You can (providing you are using RISC OS 3 or better) produce a certificate
  24. showing that you completed the crossword (or what percentage you completed)
  25. by either finishing the word search completely, or at any stage by pressing
  26. the Print key.

  28. Registration
  29. ------------
  30. To actually create the crosswords you need the X_Word creation program. The
  31. registration fee for X_Word is 7.99. To register make a cheque to M. Smith
  32. for 7.99 and print clearly your address as well as who you want the program
  33. to be registered to. Also write the name of the application on your note
  34. (ie X_Word).

  64. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  65. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  66. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. A catalogue is also available upon request.

  68. Geography:
  69. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  70.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  71.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  72.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  73.   & Africa.
  74. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  75.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  76.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  77. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  78.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  79. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  80.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  81. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  82.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  84. Science:
  85. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  86.   against the clock.
  87. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  88.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  89.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  90.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  91. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  92.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  93.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  94.   different each time they are printed.
  95. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  96.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  97.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  98.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  99.   also be produced.
  100. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  101. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  102.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  103. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  104.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  105. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  106.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  108. Word Puzzles:
  109. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  110.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  111. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  112.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  113.   on screen
  114. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  115.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  116. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  117.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  118. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  119.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  120. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  121. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  122. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  123.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  124.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  125.   printed.

  127. Picture Puzzles:
  128. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  129.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  130.   range of abilities.
  131. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  132.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  133.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  134.   levels.
  135. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  136.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  137. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  138.   or columns into their correct positions.

  140. Miscellaneous:
  141. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  142.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  143. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  144.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  145.   your own tests.
  146. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  147.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  148. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  149.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  150. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  151.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  152. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  153.   export as a sprite file.
  154. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  155.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  156.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  157.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  158. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  159.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  160.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  161.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  162. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  163.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  164.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
