  6. If you unzipped this product from its constituent ZIP file(s)
  7. _without_ the "-d" option (to rebuild the original correct directory
  8. structure), then you have two options. *EITHER* delete this file and the
  9. other files you've just created and try again, or carry on reading here
  10. until you get to the part where it tells you which directories to put
  11. everything in, and then use the MCLINK/DOS installation script or copy
  12. everything across manually!

  14. If you use a Mac, please note that you should avoid any unzipping
  15. options that involve 'smart'-handling of linefeeds.

  34. MAPPER-3a/GB 4.6 is shareware. This does not make it a free program! Yes,
  35. you can copy it freely to friends or acquaintances, or even upload the
  36. original ZIP file to bulletin boards etc, but if you like it and continue
  37. to use it, then you are honour-bound to register the program by sending
  38. me a cheque for †14 (pounds).

  41. a) a clear conscience that you're using paid-for software, and that
  42.    you're helping support future development of MAPPER-3a/GB and other
  43.    quality Psion shareware software.
  44. b) a special code that will personalise your copy of MAPPER-3a/GB, remove
  45.    the opening and closing shareware screens and let you access the
  46.    program more conveniently by shrinking or removing the status
  47.    window to give more room on-screen. No need to re-install the
  48.    software, just use the registration menu option and type in the code!

  52. and some of the more technical aspects to running it. For general help in
  53. using and understanding MAPPER-3a/GB, please browse through the *extensive*
  54. on-line help. The on-line help is the only documentation of most of
  55. MAPPER-3a/GB's features, so work through it properly! 8-)

  58. NOTE to upgraders in general. Although Mapper-3a/GB gets updated
  59. regularly, these additions tend to be fairly minor. You may wish to
  60. check the changes summary below to see whether you need to upgrade your
  61. currently installed version or not. Note that if you are only one
  62. version behind, special 'upgrade' ZIPs are available for download on
  63. the Web, CIX and Compuserve, containing just the changed files.

  95. This is MAPPER-3a/GB, released as shareware for the Psion 3a.
  96. All rights reserved, and copyrights, including the database files
  97. and their format, where appropriate (see listings below).

  99. All data sets are original work of the various contributors, collated using
  100. information from low resolution free maps, genuine public domain
  101. information, data gathered from personally-owned GPS units, club/hobbyist
  102. databases, and RAC and AA member information packs.
  103.  
  104. ****Please note**** that in much of the displayed graphics, coastlines,
  105. boundaries, railways and road vectors are shown diagrammatically, for ease
  106. of understanding.

  108. ***Please especially note*** Mapper-3a's low resolution. *Everything* is
  109. at *least* +/- 1km both horizontally and vertically! Using low resolution
  110. means that the program won't conflict or overlap with existing PC-based
  111. GIS systems or infringe OS map copyrights and (more importantly) means
  112. that quite large areas and amounts of information can be crammed into a
  113. palmtop, where a PC version would need megabytes!!

  115. Components and Installation.
  116. ----------------------------
  117. This full distribution of MAPPER-3a/GB v4.6 comprises three separate ZIP
  118. files, for convenience in downloading and unzipping; MAPA46.ZIP
  119. (containing this file and the main program files), MAPB46.ZIP (containing
  120. extra MP3 item and MP4 vector overlays and any related information files or
  121. databases), and MAPC46.ZIP (containing the town plan schematics and
  122. utilities).

  124. {Note that if you were rather looking for a 'lite' version of
  125. Mapper-3a/GB, i.e. you don't want all the town plans or most of the
  126. overlays, then just use MAPA46.ZIP on its own.}

  128. Mapper-3a is almost certainly the largest and most complex program you'll
  129. ever have to install on your Psion, so don't get frustrated if you can't
  130. seem to work out how to get everything going immediately. Try installing
  131. another (simpler) program first, and then try Mapper-3a again when you're
  132. more confident with files, directories etc.

  134. NOTE: Before installing Mapper-3a, do the following. Go into 'Set
  135. Preferences' on your system screen menu and set 'Update lists' to "System
  136. Button". If you don't do this, the 3a will try and update all its lists
  137. after *every* file is copied, which will take ages ....
  138.  
  139. If you are a MCLINK user:
  140.   (i) If you've unzipped the ZIP files without using the -d and have all
  141.       the Mapper-3a files in the current directory. Note that an example
  142.       MCLINK script file is included, called INSTALL.SCR, which you'll
  143.       need to customise for yourself by changing the disk names to suit
  144.       your set-up and then use it to save yourself some typing! To use it,
  145.       start MCLINK and type @INSTALL.SCR
  146.  
  147.   (ii) If you *did* use -d with PKUNZIP and now have all the files in
  148.       their original directory structure, don't worry. With the link on
  149.       between the Psion and the PC, go to the Psion keyboard. Position the
  150.       cursor on the system screen on Time and press Psion-C. The 'Copy
  151.       Files' dialog will appear with the root directory selected. Change
  152.       the second line to point to the appropriate directory on the PC.
  153.       Change the third line to be "\", i.e. a single backslash. Change the
  154.       fourth line to be the disk you want to install Mapper-3a onto. Set
  155.       the fifth line to read "Yes". Your Psion will then copy over the
  156.       directory tree in one go to the appropriate disk.
