Golf Convertible and the artists girlfriend.
Excellent quality. Artworks.
Nicholas van der Walle of Astute Graphics.

four files are
Elephant2 - Mouse2 - Tropical & WoodPeck2).
BORDERS
A small selection of borders in draw format. Nice
quality.
BUSHIDO
This small collection of maps and plans was
inspired by the difficulty Mr Morfitt found getting
hold of useful material for playing the
magnificent role-playing game Bushido
(produced by FGU).
Contents:
1) Boat plans; these are self-explanatory classic
small boat and larger junk.
2) House plans: These are at 25mm scale or 6‘ =
1“, for use as ground plans for role-playing.
Timber posts, sliding doors, hinged doors,
verandas, etc., are largely obvious and need no
explanation. Some have explanatory diagrams
showing room use, etc., where known.
3) Misc items: Tents: these can be cut out,
coloured and glued together for use in role-
playing. Exhaustive search of my book
collection produced only one possibly early tent
design and this is it. The tents should be coloured
in stripes, possibly red and white, green and white
or black and yellow. The Samurai mon or heraldic
emblem can be displayed if the owner can claim
one.
4) The Sado directory is material (2 very basic
maps showing places and topography, largely
factual but with some invention to fill in the gaps)
on an island off the north coast of Japan, used
throughout the middle ages as a place of exile for
opponents of whichever regime happened to be in
power at the time. It is the basic material for a
scenario, still (after some years!) in the process of
being written. The story will involve the
attempted rescue of a samurai leader in exile there
but threatened with imminent execution, so the
deadline for the player-characters are tight. The
action takes place in the 1th century, probably my
favourite period in Japanese history, which was
the time of the wars of the rival northern and
southern courts, and its basic theme and facts are
taken from the chronicle The Taiheiki. I shall
hopefully get round one day to finishing the
whole scenario.
5) Temple Plan: At present this consists only of
the floor plan of the main worship building and
the ground floor plan of the pagoda of a Buddhist
temple, so is very incomplete. Perhaps I shall add
more if I have time, as well as doing some Shinto
temple buildings. I did begin to do a plan of a
large Zen Buddhist temple complex but have
not got very far with it.
6) Town Plans: TownPlanA is typical of the sort
of towns that sprang up from an early period as
commercial centres at river crossings and around
temples.

DEMONSTRATIONS
!XTREME
This is probably the very first Acorn demo made
by several foreign demo crews together. It
features several exciting techniques never
shown in the Acorn demo scene until now.
Xtreme will run on many Archimedes and RiscPC
machines, however not all demo parts will work
on the low end machines. Some demo parts will
(most of the time silently) be skipped when the
necessary hardware (e.g. VIDC20) isn’t available.
If you want to see every demo part in its full
glory, run the demo on a RiscPC with 1 MByte
VRAM.
ARM’s Tech - BASS - Eddie xxx - Excelsior.
3D_ACORN
To get the best from this small demo you need a
pair of 3D glasses.

FISHTANK
This is the first public release from the demo
group ‘DFI’. A rather limited fish tank simulator.
No music I’m afraid as we wanted to keep it as
short as possible. Tap space to disturb the shoal.
Graphics / coding : PT. Concept / OS : Duncan.
Looks superb.
GEMINI
Welcome to 3D space. In this directory you can

*This King James’ Bible is the SECOND Project
Gutenberg Version and is the 10th edition. Please
view using !StrongEd as this will screen out the
PC format codes.
BROWNIAN
This is a simulation of the so called Brownian
Motion. This phenomenon can be viewed for real
by looking at smoke particles with a microscope.
The smoke particles have to be illuminated from
the side. They generally travel along in a straight
line until they are hit by the invisible tiny air
molecules. These are light, but move very fast, so
they jolt the smoke in
different directions when they actually collide.
Robert Seago.
CHISQUARE
The program can do simple statistical Chi-
Squared tests. The test can be used for various
purposes, but was originally wrote on a Beeb
to compare the numbers of crossed fruit flies in a
batch, with the theoretical number derived from
the laws of genetics discovered by Gregor
Mendel.
Robert Seago.
CLOZE
This application was written to aid the literacy
tutor in the preparation of cloze exercises for their
students. Written primarily or those who are
involved in Adult Basic Education it should prove
useful to any one who is teaching literacy skills.

EPOCHS
This program simply shows information about the
geological sequence.
Robert Seago.
ESCHER
The familiar tiling of a kitchen or bathroom wall
is usually produced by placing square or
rectangular tiles edge-to-edge and corner-to-
corner over the wall. Many more interesting
tilings can be formed by tiles of more complex
shapes. Such tilings are produced by placing a
shaped tile in a number of orientations,
repetitively over a plane. For the tiles to fit
together, only certain orientations of the tiles can
be used, and they in turn constrain the allowed
shapes. In spite of these restrictions, there are vast
numbers of possible tilings which are really
limited only by one’s imagination.
The Dutch artist M C Escher was the great
pioneer and exploiter of this idea. This program
allows appropriate shapes to be generated and the
associated tilings to be produced.
Tom P McLean.
FOURIER
!Fourier makes interesting waveforms and will
given you more insight into waves.
Robert Seago. v1.30.
FOURST
A simple demo of a stroke engine.

SLIDERULE
For those people who remember far enough back,
before Sir Clive Sinclair developed his early
calculators, people who had to multiply
could used log tables, which made multiplication
a little easier,
once you knew what you were doing. A quicker
way of multiplying, dividing, and other
operations, was to use, a device called a
sliderule. This essentially consisted of two rules,
fitted in a sliding arrangement, that could be
positioned to read off for instance the result of
multiplying two numbers. This is a compute
version control is via the mouse.
Robert Seago.
SPEAK
This program amalgamates both !Say and
!KeySpeak. It also has the bug sorted out that
prevented Key Speak saying shifted charecters.
The three options include :-
1. Speaking keys, while multitasking, with
other programs. Possibly it could be of use to
visually handicapped people.
2. Any text file dragged on to the icon bar or
main window will be recited.
3. Text can be written in to the window icon.

electromagnetic spectrum.
Robert Seago.
SWAVE
This is a short demonstration showing standing
waves.
Robert Seago.
SSYSTEM
This program is one that demonstrates the
movements of planets in the solar system, the
ratios of the speeds and orbital size being
fairly accurate. No attempt has been made to
make the orbits true ellipses, they are describing
purely circular motion.
Robert Seago.
STATISTIX
This program performs limited statistical analysis
of data. It can contain two data banks only. It
performs the following tasks.
1. Descriptive, data is available, about these two
data sets.
2. A significance difference test can be performed
on the two sets.4 3. The first of these two sets can
be analysed to find its‘ frequency distribution,
and the resulting data can be saved as a CSV file ,
or displayed as a histogram, which can also be
displayed as a drawfile.
Robert Seago.
TABLES
Tables tests, in a way that is fun, the knowledge
of tables. In this modern age of computers and
calculators the need to know the times tables is
thought of, by many, to be unimportant.
Richard does not agree and this educational tool
was written by him to help prove what a
difference this knowledge really makes.
Richard Sharpe. v1.20. Shareware.{bupda }
TELESCOPE
!Telescope is a multi-tasking program under RISC
OS and provides information on the objects
within our Solar System as well as
general astronomical data. The observer’s date
and time can be selected for any period past,
present and future since 713 BC and the
observer’s location can be entered for any place
on Earth. Data is provided for the Sun, Moon and
planets. In all calculations it is assumed the
observer is at sea-level.
SHAREWARE. Martin Dale.
TRENT
This is a program that can be used to find an
index of quality of a freshwater river or lake. It
was developed by the Severn Trent Water
Company. It depends on the fact that the purer
water is:-
1. It has more species of animal present.
2. Certain indicator species also indicate pure
water.
Robert Seago.
TRIANGLES
!Triangles will find the angles, internal area and
the lengths of sides for any right angle triangle
and allows the calculation of angles, with full
working displayed, using Sine, Cosine and
Tangent.
D.Robinson.
TWOST
A simple demo of a 2 stroke engine.
Robert Seago.
TYPE
The program is designed to give you typing
practice. It is not a
typing tutor, but you may well eventually find it
helpful to keep
your fingers on the correct key positions, and to
look at the
screen, where the keyboard is drawn out, not the
keys as I still do!
Robert Seago.

obstacles to overcome. Plenty of options and
even more in the full game which only costs £6
directly from the author.
David T Johnston.
3DMINES
Three versions of Mine Hunt, 3Dmines,
CrazyMines and StrmSweep.

through a series of underground intergalactic
mazes, find the baby-budgie in captivity
and get out, taking extreme care not to
accidentally smash the hostage against a wall!
Matt Lucas.
BAKA_CHAL
This is an ancient Tibetan game, normally played
on a beaten brass board, with the pieces made
from cast brass. There are tigers and 20 goats -
you play the goats. The game starts with the
tigers at the corner points, and all of the goats off-
board. You must get all the goats on the board
and trap the tigers. Excellent.
Xavier Educational Software.
BANG
Another game along the lines of !Chain and
!Hexatoms. This is a first class version with
excellent graphics and many options.
Andrew Clover.
BATTLE
Yet another first class game by the Public Domain
master, Andrew Ayre. This is his version of
Battleships. Play against your computer or a
friend. The graphics are superb and the computer
plays quite a good game but you can beat it.
Andrew Ayre.
BLOBBY2
You must guide Blobby through each of the 8
levels to the flagpole at the end of the level. The
screen constantly scrolls upwards and gets faster
as the level progresses. You have 10 lives and
you may lose a life if you allow yourself to fall
off the bottom of the screen or hit an enemy.
David Johnston of ARM’d & Dangerous.
BLOBBYDEM
Welcome to the world of blobby, a strange lump
of goo that generally blobs around the place. The
object of each level is to reach the exit before the
time limit is up. Each level contains a number of
items to halt your progress these are: Springs -
Launcher - Invisible Walls - Teleporters - Helium
Cylinders - Fake Walls and Lifts. This is a demo
version, the full version costs £5 from
David T. Johnston.
BOFWMAN
For all you owners of th Dimension’s Birds of
War flight sim, here is a completely new 2 page
manual designed by Stephen Scott using
Impression Publisher, for the purpose of replacing
the abysmal quality edition that D produced with
the game back in late 1993.
BOFWMAPS
Two sets of maps for Birds of War. Requires the
BofWmiss and BofWModels archives.
BOFWMISS
Two sets of missions for Birds of War. Requires
the BofWmaps and BofWModels archives.
BOFWMODELS
Two sets of models for Birds of War. Requires
the BofWmaps and BofWMiss archives.
BOMBS
This is an isometric-3D puzzle game featuring a
lot of explosions. The object of the game is to
blow up all the bombs on a level. The problem is
that you are very much prone to explode yourself.
So you have to solve each level by finding out the
correct sequence in which to explode the bombs
that will allow you to live and proceed to the next
level. EXCELLENT!!
Steven Kramer. v1.00.
BOMBZ
This is in my opinion one of the best PD games to
come my way in a long time. The graphics are
superb; the game play is smooth and the puzzles
are easy enough to complete yet hard enough to
make you think!! Your task is quite simple. Get
rid of all the bombs on each level then escape off
the edge of the screen. To blow up a bomb, push
it to where you want to cause an explosion, then
collect a detonator and touch the bomb again and
quickly get out of the way. This version contains
1 levels plus a level designer.
Tony Houghton.
BREAKOUT
A simple game of Break Out.
BRIX
Brix is a game where sets of two brix fall into the
screen from any side and you must connect them
in rows of three or more to make them vanish.
When rows of three or more brix vanish any brix
left on their own will also vanish. When two brix
into the screen you may rotate them and move
them around as they fall. They will stop once
they land on other brix. If the brix fall out the
edge of the screen you will lose points. As the
game progresses the level of difficulty will also
increase. This will make the brix fall down
faster. David Johnston.
BUMPER
You must guide the Bumper Ball around 12 levels
each with 10 laps. To complete a lap you must go
round the course in the direction shown by the
arrows and collect the flag. The end of a lap is the
area between the 2 chequered flags. You must
complete each level within the time limit. Once
you get the hang of it you’ll enjoy this one.

see what it’s all about.

You have to clear the board, amassing the highest
score you can. Tiles disappear if you click on

not move and the game ends. A very addictive
game that will keep most people coming back for
more.
Alan Trewartha.

old CPC again? Or would you simply like to
impress your non-Acorn owning friends by
adding yet one more operating system to the list?

its superiority to the world... In order to do this

and is highly recommended.{breco }
Darren Windsor.
CYCLING
You are a rider from the Team Deutsche Telekom
professional cycling team. You have to ride the
ARM’d & Dangerous Tour which is against
2 other riders and is over a number of stages. You
have to avoid crashing into the other riders,
spectators, parked cars, trees and the other objects
that litter the roads and surrounding area. If you
do crash then your injuries will go up. If it gets
too high you’ll have to retire the race.
Andrew Titman of ARM’d & Dangerous.

the Delta-Cat joystick.
DUNGEONDUO

debatable (they tend to run for their lives if

Paul Hallam. v1.00.
FLOOD
You must guide a vast store of water held at the
top of the screen out the bottom of the screen to
be safely stored. You do this by pushing blocks
around and leaving them in the right positions so
that the water will be guided to the bottom of the
screen. Sounds too easy!!

What can I say? This game is superb and will
keep you at it for quite a long time. The game

moves is innovative and amazing!! This is a must
for any games collection. Collect the stars but
avoid the scorpions.
Andrew and Robert Titman of ARM’d and
Dangerous.
GUNSHIP83
You and a friend must bravely fly your spaceship
out into the unknown and destroy loads of hapless
aliens. The fun comes when you and your friend
argue about the reason you missed shooting the
last alien. Banking at the wrong moment, bog-
eyed shooting, and crashing into scenery and
bullets are all very annoying, and clearly the
other guy’s fault! Still unfinished but fun all the
same!! Surely the definitive Acorn Freeware
scramble game.
Paul G Hallam. v0.83
HEDZ
Another great game that features scans of peoples
heads!! Pop these and find out what’s inside!!
Another great Bananas Production.

JIGSAW
Select a sprite, decide how many pieces you’d
like it ‘Jigsawed’ into and then put it back
together.
LOST
You must guide the mouse pointer around ten
obstacle littered levels in this exasperating game
of skill. It will take a high skill level to navigate
around each level especially with the gravity
which is constantly dragging you to the floor. If
you are not too good with the mouse, you will be
after you’ve played this game a few times.
ARM’d & dangerous. v1.10. {bupda } Feb 96
MAPMAKER
MAP MAKER is fairly simple to use, and guides
you by making various icons and pieces of help
available throughout the program. The best
way to learn how to use it is to try it out, and
create some maps. The maps you create can be
used as level data for games for example.
Jonathan Tate.
MERCENARY
This may be a half finished game and crash from
time to time but it is one of the best ‘unfinished’
games that I’ve seen for quite a long time. You
are in control of a tank and you have a true 3D
landscape to explore. If it moves....... shoot it!!
Requires 2Mb and RISC OS3.
Michel Grimminck.
MISERLY
More platform fun from ARM’d & Dangerous.
This time you’ve lost all your money for various
reasons. Your task is to get it back while
avoiding the various nasties such as the taxman,
prison guards, dogs to name a few. Once you
have collected all the ‘dosh’ you can progress to
the next level. Eight levels to complete with four
themes. Very playable and fun!!

ten levels while avoiding the reactors and robots.
Paul Taylor. 1992.
MOUSEY

high level of skill to achieve high scores.

MRMISER
The latest and best game so far by ARM’d &
dangerous. Mr Miser is the most miserly skinflint
in the world. He’s never spent a penny in his life.
Unfortunately he’s lost all his money and wants to
get it back.
Features
¨¨¨¨¨¨¨¨
The game uses 256 colour mode 15 hand drawn
graphics. Outline fonts are used instead of the
system font through out. There is a font drawn
high score table which saves to disc. The game
includes 25 levels, each with its own name.
There are different collectables on different levels
each with its own value. There a five different
bad guy characters which animate even when not
moving. The scoring system is worked out by the
amount of money collected. The bad guys
become harder to dodge on later levels. The
bonus randomly appears in different positions on
screen and will disappear when not collected.

PUSHY2
0What you’ve got here is a (another) puzzle
game. Push the boxes onto the crosses which
someone’s drawn on the floor. Remember that
you can’t push a box if there’s something solid on
the other side of it. An extra complication “new
with Pushy II”: you also have to push balls onto
crosses, and they don’t stop moving till they hit
something. This is one of the best PD games
available. The graphics are stunning.
By R - Fred - W for FishNet Software.

for simple maths problems in a bright and fun
way. It is ideal for covering the “simulations”
sections in the National Curriculum IT syllabus.
The program is played by up to four people (any
of which can be controlled by a child or the
computer) and best results are achieved when
pupils play against each other in teams. The

SHUZZLE
Shuzzle is a very simple puzzle, but one that can
be highly infuriating. It is based on a x grid with
an extra square sticking out of the left hand side.
The puzzle involves groups of items, all items in
a group have the same properties, and no two
groups have identical properties. When you have
arranged the pieces such that no two pieces from
the same group lie in the same row, column

SWARM
Way back in 1987, Broderbund Software released
a game called Crystal Quest which was rather fun
to play. Nearly ten years later, there’s a new
version called Swarm. Written in about eight
months for RISC OS, it’s a little flashier than the
black+white Mac version I played :-) You’ll find
parallax backdrops, particles flying everywhere,
smoother animation, bonuses and a few other
hidden features. I’d say that Swarm is a little bit
tougher than Crystal Quest, but you’ll
find more bonuses available in Swarm.
Matthew Bloch. v1.03. Requires 2Mb.
TARGET
World War 3 has just broken out, dangerous
missiles, some of which having the potential to

Acorn platform (well, that I know of anyhow),
but - thanks to Kozzey - there now is !

PPP200
PPP is a network protocol that allows two
computers to exchange IP packets over serial
lines. It is used by most Internet providers to
allow remote computers to connect to Internet via
a modem dialup. PPPdriver allows the FreeNet
TCP/IP stack to communicate with remote hosts
using serial lines. PPPdriver conforms to the
DCI2 specification: this means that it will work
with the current versions of FreeNet (1.01 at the
time of writing) but doesn’t work with Acorn
TCP/IP stack (that is DCI4-compatible).
Sergio Monesi. SHAREWARE. v2.00.

decoding routines, and has more knobs and
whistles than you can shake a stick at. It will
encode and decode to/from single/multiple files
and (if desired) will attempt to extract
intelligently multiple encoded parts contained, out
of order, within a single file. The filetype of the
original file is included in the encoding and the
decoded file’s type can be set before decoding.
Paddy Spencer. SHAREWARE. v2.70.

RLAB1_23A
Rlab is an interactive, interpreted scientific
programming environment. Rlab is a very high
level language intended to provide fast
prototyping and program development, as well as
easy data visualization, and processing. Rlab is
not a clone of languages such as those used by
tools like Matlab or Matrix_X/Xmath. However,
as Rlab focuses on creating a good experimental
environment (or laboratory) in which to do matrix
math, it can be called “MATLAB like“ since the
programming language possesses similar
operators and concepts.
Maurizio.Ferrari. v1.23b4.
Mike Brennan has contributed some code from
mawk.
TCL
Tcl (pronounced tickle ) is a simple interpreted
scripting language. It is extendible in that it is
easy to add commands to Tcl, and embedable in
that it can be included in other applications.
Tcl was invented and implemented by John
K.Ousterhout, originally for unix systems. It is
usually used with an extension to the x
windowing system called Tk, either embedded in
applications, or using a general purpose Tcl/Tk
program called wish. Tcl can also be
used from the command line using another
program called tclsh. Unix Tcl is split into a
generic part and a POSIX extension, containing
the unix-specific operations such as file handling.

Harmony is a music player. It gives you plenty of
control over the track being played. It provides
useful features − no guff. It will play all the

one of your saved playlist files. You can do things
like Shuffle play, and of course it’s all very easy
to use.

objects), and also sprite objects containing the
new ‘deep-colour’ (32 thousand & 16 million
colour) sprites introduced with RISC
OS 3.5. v1.12. This archive also contains
DF_Render v1.00. This application was written to
test the new transformation facility of the
DrawUtilsA module, which is an alternative to the
DrawFile module (both do most of the work of
displaying a drawfile). For comparison purposes
the program can also use the DrawFile module.
and DrawPrint v1.02 This application is a
DrawFile viewer and printing utility which

memory of an application on disc (called
swapping out of a task). The memory it
occupied becomes available for other use now.
As the word “temporarily” in the previous
sentence already indicated you can swap a
swapped out task back in and continue using it, if
of course you have enough free memory to swap
the task back in again. This un-registered copy
will allow a single swap only. SHAREWARE.
E-J.R. Leyssens. v1.00.
EVNTSHELL
A ‘Shell’ program is a starting point for
developing your own applications that run under
the RISC-OS wimp system. The
EvntShell library contains code to handle most of
the ‘Events’ i.e. opening a menu, closing a
window etc that can occur, and all your
application has to do is inform the library what it
should do when certain events occur. For example
a menu can be attached to a window or to an icon
- the library will open the menu for you in the
correct position! when the <MENU> button on
the mouse is used.
PROCshell_AttachModeChangeHandler is
another very simple example which calls a
function in the ‘User Application’ this is the bit
you write, starting with a ‘Shell’ created by the
AppBuild tool or by modifying one of the
examples when the screen mode changes.
A more complicated example is
PROCshell_AttachPane which allows the
attachment of pane windows to a parent window.
All opening and closing of windows and panes is
handled totally by the library code. This is a very
desirable application for any programmer to have.
It supports ResFind internationalisation and menu
handling using Alex Petrov’s MenuUtils module
for even more flexibility. It is supplied with
many demo applications that are fully commented
and serve as excellent teaching tools. They are:
!ColourPik - !Dataload - !DatePik - !FontPik -
!MoveCaret - !OLE - !Panes - !PtrTrix - !Redraw
-!Redraw2 - !RenderDrw - !Sliders - !TestMenu -
!Text-DTP. The documentation is in two formats,
!StrongHelp and standard Acorn text files.

The module ExtBASICasm provides a patch for
versions 1.05, 1.06 and 1.14 of BASIC V, as
supplied with RISC OS 3.1, 3.5 and 3.6
respectively, to allow the direct use of the extra
instructions provided by the ARM3, ARM6 and
ARM7 processors. The missing floating -point
and general co-processor instructions, and some
assembler directives more familiar to Acorn
Assembler users have been added; also the APCS-
R register names may be used.
Darren Salt. v1.67.
EXTRABAR
Extrabar is designed to allow easy loading of
frequently used applications and opening of
directories that have a lot of useful
files in them but are a fair way down the directory
structure are on other discs.
David McCormack.
EXTARCT
ExTARct is a utility to facilitate the unpacking of
tar archivesunder RISC OS, to overcome the 77-
file per directory limit that we appear to be
lumbered with for the forseeable future. It also
swaps filenames and types where requested, using
the filetype as a subdirectory name.

GIF2RPC
gif2rpc is a program for RISC O S (>= 3.10) that
converts GIF image files to native sprite files.
This program was written mainly to allow the
generation of 32K colour images that look as
good as they can. This is because, despite what
you intuitively feel, a 256 colour image displayed
on a 32K colour screen does *not* look that
good.
Cy Booker <cy@cheepnis.demon.co.uk>. v1.02.

Messaging Service on a GSM telephone.
There is also code to allow email to be redirected
to the messaging service and a cgi-bin program to
send messages from a World Wide Web server.
Nicko van Someren.
GUITAR
This must be the best application I have yet come
across for anyone who either plays the guitar or
would like to play the guitar. It contains
information on just about every aspect of the
guitar and not only will it show you the finger
positions for each chord but will also play the
chord so that you know you’ve got it right.
The front end is also superb with a lot of thought
going into the graphics and user interface.

GUITARTAB
A collection of songs and their chords for guitar.
HAMMER
This is a desktop utility that allows easy use of
the Hammer module, which is closely linked to
Andy Southgate’s GameSuite game designer
package. The annoying drawback to the Hammer
module is that it can only easily be operated from
the command line, which can become a
bit of a pain. This app helps cure this problem.
Chris Grant.
HANGFIRE
This is the ultimate in screen burn savers. It
contains 16 modules that each give a different
type of effect while saving your monitor. These
vary from a great sliding puzzle of your
current screen to fireworks. It is also multitasking
and fully programmable.
Eduard Poor. v0.52. This is SHAREWARE with
a registration fee of £5. It is worth a lot more than
this, so if you use the programme please register
and support the Shareware principle.
HARDAPPS
Hard apps was an idea borrowed from Acorn. In
the new RISCPC, there is a directory on the hard
drive called Apps. Basically, anything you put
into it is placed into the ResourceFS inside the
Apps directory so you can easily get at it. Neat ?
You can now do the same with other Acorn
machines.
Owain Cole.
HARDBACK
A very comprehensive hard drive backup utility
with many good features. In fact far too many to
list in the catalogue. This is the Shareware demo
version in which a few features have been
removed such as auto compression. Please note
that this app is designed for those who wish to
backup to floppies NOT tapes.

HIPER
The latest version of Hiper Help. A windows-style
hyper-text help system. It supports a messaging
system for context-sensitive help & system that
allows ‘doors’ to be created for interactive help
content. The files can contain pictures in the form
of sprites, drawfiles or ‘hotspot’ files, text can be
in any font, and help files are compiled from an
easy-to-understand macro language. Help files
can be compressed, and this version is bug-fixed
for RISC OS3.6 and above.

ICONDIR
DoggySoft’s alternative to !Menon. The idea
behind IconDir is that it will create a menu
structure just like you have on your disc. You
are able to specify the directory to start in, but
everything else is searched for on the disc.
James Ponder. v1.00. {bupda } Nov 95.
ICONTRACK
Yep! Another tracker player. This uses the QTM
modules and does quite a good job.
Andrew Hodgekins.
IFEXIST
IfExist is a small transient utility that check for

NewSprs file into the wimp sprite area.
William Bolam.
NHANCEFEYO
New sprites for FEYO. I prefer the originals.
NUMBERS
These routines started life in 1989 written in C on
the university mainframe in response to a
“Numbers Count” puzzle in PCW. The
problem (or part of it) was to calculate the biggest
prime you could find of the form N!+1.
However the routines did not get finished in time
for the puzzle deadline. ARM3 the routines run at
the same speed as they did on the mainframe!
Nick Craig-Wood. v0.12.
NUROMS
These files can be used in preference to the

POWERCAS
Powerbase College Administration Suite. Yet
another powerful arm to !Powerbase. The suite
requires the use of !Powerbase so you will
require both applications. A suite of programs for
using with student records to produce exam
statistics, parent evening appointments, timetables
and attendance records.
Derek & Steven Haslam.
POWERBASE
Powerbase is a flat-file database management
system for use with Acorn 32-bit RISC
computers. Versions from 6.60 on, are only usable
with RISC OS 3.1 or later. It looks great, works
even better and is worth a lot more than the
SHAREWARE registration fee. I can not
recommend this database highly enough. It comes
complete with six database files Boxes, Elements,
Icons, and friends. CSV files can be converted to
Powerbase format easily and it also supports
‘External’ fields which can be text, sprites or
draw files. Powerbase will work on a single
floppy system but if you have more than 1meg
then use it from a RAM disc for blinding speed.
Includes a very comprehensive manual in both
text and Publisher formats. Powerbase also mail
merge with Computer Concepts Impression

RIPELLI
Two companion applications. Deskdate is a utility
which puts a date display on your desktop in the
fashion of a desk calendar and a desktop calendar
with pictures (note that the pictures look best in
256-colour modes). As a bonus if you use Acorn’s
!Alarm as a feature of your desktop, Ripelli will
highlight all dates for which you have alarms set.

PCA
This archive contains details of the Plug-In-
Compliant Application (PCA) messaging
standard. This standard is designed to facilitate
the sharing of common data object types residing
in dynamic areas between applications.
Compliance with the standard will enable your
applications to be used with any other which also
complies with the standard. The Archive includes
an example sprite viewing and painting program
called !Spaint which conforms to the PCA
standard. This program is provided as an example
only. It has not gone through our usual bug-
testing and quality control process and therefore
should not be considered anything other than
as an example of a very simple PCA
implementation.
The Composition and ProArt24 demos also
support PCA. The license is currently free of
charge.

RUNNET
This little application performs a useful function.
It allows you to force applications which would
not normally process files of a given file type
(when double clicked) to accept them (running
the application in question if necessary). For
example, !ChangeFSI only traps double clicks for
JPEG and TIFF files. This application can
force it to accept double clicks for the other file
formats it understands (eg. GIF, BMP, etc.). It can
also be used for getting SparkFS to accept
ArcFS’s new filetype archives.
Dr. Ian Palmer. v1.01.

Simpson’s rule. Although Simpson’s rule is, in
theory, an approximate method, it is usually
accurate to 2 or 3 significant figures when 3 or 5
ordinates are used, becoming accurate to about
the 6th significant figure.

SOUNDCON
SoundCon is an application for basic sound
sample format conversion on the Archimedes. It
can read and write samples in a variety of
formats common on various computer platforms
and can directly playback most the formats it can

feature of SoundCon is that all processing and
playback is done from disc meaning that the only
memory required is for the application itself and
there is no limit to the sample size.

TCREADER
!TCReader is an Archimedes port of Barry
Childress’ excellent DOS application of the same
name. Its purpose in life is to compress text files
(although it will work with binary files as well),
into a format which may be read by Barry’s
Reader application for the Psion 3 palmtop
computer. This port requires Risc-OS 3.1 or
better to run. A hard disc, whilst not essential, is
highly recommended.
Tony van der Hoff. Shareware.
TEMPLATES
A set of templates that might save other
programmers time.
James Robinson.
TEXTPRINT
Text Print is a quick way of printing files (well,
quicker than the Printer Driver, anyway). It is not
intended to produce final copies of any work, or
as an alternative printer driver. It may, however,
be useful for printing help files etc.
Ben Spencer.

THHEAP
THHeap is a pair of modules to provide memory
management with a programmers’ interface
consistent across RISC OS 3.1 and later versions.
Tony Houghton. v1.00.
THSOUND
The purpose of THSound is to allow many
different samples to be played without having to
load each one as a module in its own right
(often impractical due to potential name clashes).
All it does is take a pointer to some data and use
this to make a sound voice.
Tony Houghton.
THHEAP
THHeap is a pair of modules to provide memory
management with a programmers’ interface
consistent across RISC OS 3.1 and later versions.
Tony Houghton. v1.00.
THUMBNAIL
Thumbnail provides you with a convenient way
of searching for a picture from a library of
pictures by providing ‘Thumbnail’ versions of the
pictures that can be viewed quickly and easily.
Thumbnail requires Acorn’s ChangeFSI
application as it uses this for converting different
file formats to a convenient format. Thumbnail
also provides support for producing thumbnails of
Draw and Artworks files. Thus it can provide a
very convenient way of looking at clipart for the
Draw/Artworks files you want without having to
load all the draw files into !Draw, !ArtWorks or
!AWViewer. All Thumbnail pictures are stored at
16bpp (or 32 bpp) and dithered to either 256
colour or 16 colour when needed for display.
This update supports RiscPC dynamic memory
areas.
Ian Palmer. v1.40. Jul 96 Shareware registration

TIDYDIR
This short basic program scans a directory and
tidies up the file names. It converts them all to
lower case except the initial letter which it
capitalises, for example heLLO would become
Hello.
Ian Clark of Rooster PD. v1.00.
TIFFIN
Reads TIFF files and converts them into 32-bit
sprites (16.7 million colours). But ChangeFSI
does that, doesn’t it? Well, yes, most of the time,
but ChangeFSI doesn’t cope with all TIFFs. In
particular, it doesn’t cope with multi-channel
TIFFs such as those exported by PhotoShop 3 on
the PowerMac. Tiffin is likely to read just about
any valid TIFF file thrown at it. You can then drag
the sprite into ChangeFSI for scaling or taking
down to fewer colours.
Peter Greenham. v1.21.
TILES
An assortment of tiled backdrops. Created by
running the original sprites through !SpriteMode.
JJ ‘96.

information and a sprite for all those files that you
just cannot identify, currently over 800 different
filetypes are detailed. This software is unique
in that it can work entirely out of sight, and is
fully configurable. It prevents the ‘No run action
specified error’ from ever occurring again, and
instead provides information and a sprite
when the file is double-clicked. Comes with a
10,000 word comprehensive manual, and built in
editor, searcher and scanner as well ability to save
the data as sprite or information as text to
disk. This is the shareware version and can be

USEFUL
USEFUL is a set of modules and routines
designed to make programming easier. These
modules, although very useful for BASIC
programs, are designed to be used in languages
which don’t have certain features built in, for
example assembler doesn’t have a random
number generator built-in, and thus the Random
SWI could be useful. All modules contain full
help text. Test programs are supplied showing
examples of their use.

Shareware
These are the standard rules of shareware:
a) You may freely distribute unregistered copies
of the software to other users.
b) You have a trial period to evaluate the
software. (1 to 30 days)
c) If after this time limit you are still using the
software or intend to use it in the future then you
must register with the author and pay any
registration fee due. You are breaking the law if
you fail to do so.
d) If you do not intend using the software then
you must delete it from your floppy / hard disc.
Remember in most cases the authors of shareware
have spent hundreds of hours creating programs
of a very high quality for you to use. It is up to
you to register and ensure that the author gets
some reward for his or her hard work.
Please note that these are the basic rules and more
conditions may be found within the program itself
or in a help/text file.
Licenseware
This is a form of shareware which is licensed to
one or more PD libraries. In essence, when you
buy a licenseware program you are buying low
cost commercial software. Don't pass it around
to your friends. You are the only one who has the
right to use it.
Please note that under British law the terms used
in this text are not recognised. The terms
originated from the USA.
