  4. Introduction
  5. ============
  6. CrossWord is an easy to use crossword creation utility which aims
  7. to help reduce the effort required when creating a crossword. The
  8. finished results can be saved as a Draw format file for inclusion
  9. in DTP programs etc.
  10.  
  11. CrossWord fully supports Acorn's interaction help application; you 
  12. should use this to guide you through its various functions. Some 
  13. more details concerning these functions are given below.

  15. The Toolbox
  16. ===========
  17. The toolbox contains all of the editing functions available; 
  18. starting from the top left they include:
  19.  
  20.   Number
  21.   ------
  22.    This numbers the current crossword displaying the results in 
  23.    the font of your choice. Some functions remove these numbers 
  24.    because they either extend the crossword size or change its 
  25.    contents in some way.
  26.  
  27.   Remove
  28.   ------
  29.    This removes any numbers which are currently displayed.
  30.  
  31.   Wipe
  32.   ----
  33.    This wipes all the black squares in the current crossword to 
  34.    white and also removes any numbers currently displayed.
  35.  
  36.   Adjust
  37.   ------
  38.    This allows you to adjust the size of the crossword, you 
  39.    should note that if numbers are currently displayed on the 
  40.    crossword then these will be removed.
  41.  
  42.   Text offsets
  43.   ------------
  44.    These are the spaces between the numbers and the top left-hand 
  45.    corner of its corresponding box. These offsets are given in 
  46.    Draw units for greater accuracy. Although CrossWord attempts 
  47.    to position the text in the same position for every font, some 
  48.    fonts require extra alignment.

  50.   Fonts
  51.   -----
  52.    You can change the font used for numbering to any which is 
  53.    currently available on your system. This also allows you to 
  54.    change the size of the font. You should note that changing the 
  55.    current font or size will result in CrossWord renumbering the 
  56.    crossword if numbers are displayed at the time of alteration.

  58.   Scale
  59.   -----
  60.    You can scale the size of the crossword between 25% and 999%, 
  61.    this can help in getting an overview of a large crossword or 
  62.    when altering the text offsets.
  63.  
  64.   Save
  65.   ----
  66.    This saves the current crossword in a CrossWord file.

  68. Other functions
  69. ===============

  71.   Create
  72.   ------
  73.    You can display the create dialogue box by either clicking on 
  74.    the CrossWord icon on the iconbar (when there is no crossword 
  75.    being edited) or by selecting 'Create...' from CrossWord's 
  76.    main menu. The size of the crossword can be anything you like 
  77.    (memory permitting), however, you cannot create a crossword 
  78.    which has a size of less than 3 squares in either direction.

  80.   Export
  81.   ------
  82.    You can save a crossword as a Draw format file. The file will 
  83.    be identical to the crossword displayed in the CrossWord 
  84.    window. You can either save this as a file or drag it to 
  85.    another application that can load Draw format files.

  91. A couple of ideas for improvements:

  93.              Allow words to be included in the crossword.
  94.              Automatic crossword creation from a list of words.
