  13. This file contains instructions to help you get going with the demo 
  14. version of PipeDream 4.

  17. %C%%H2%How to read this file
  18.  
  19. Read this file before you start playing with PipeDream. You can scroll 
  20. through the document by using the up and down arrow keys, the Page Up 
  21. and Page Down keys or clicking in the scroll bar on the right hand side 
  22. of the window.

  24. %C%%H2%Once PipeDream is loaded
  25.  
  26. PipeDream is loaded when the blue 4 icon is visible on the icon bar at 
  27. the bottom of your screen. To start a new window click the left button 
  28. of the mouse on the PipeDream icon.

  30. Pressing the middle, or Menu button, of the mouse whilst the blue 
  31. pointer arrow is over a PipeDream window will give you the top-level 
  32. PipeDream menu.

  34. Pressing the Menu button on the PipeDream icon gives you a further list 
  35. of options with which you may experiment.  One of these is New 
  36. Document.  This provides you with a list of Templates which you can use 
  37. to create new documents.  For example if you want to create a 
  38. spreadsheet you may find it easiest to start from the Numbers template.

  42. A short help file is available by pressing the F1 key. This will help 
  43. you to get started.

  45. %C%%H2%Once you have a new window
  46.  
  47. When you have a new window, you can start typing. To type text, as you 
  48. would in a letter, just type away. To enter a number into the 
  49. spreadsheet, press the F2 key, and type in your expression. When you 
  50. press RETURN, the result of the calculation will be displayed in the 
  51. slot.

  88. When you start PipeDream, the short menus are switched on. This makes 
  89. the menus clearer and more readable. To access the complete range of 
  90. PipeDream commands, select long menus by clicking the left button of 
  91. the mouse on the "Short Menus" option.  This is in the Choices menu 
  92. which comes from the PipeDream icon on the icon bar.

  94. On the long menus, the function key equivalents of the commands are 
  95. also shown, for those commands which have them.  In PipeDream 4 the 
  96. short menus are configurable so if you prefer to have a different set 
  97. of commands on the short menus, you can do this.

  99. %C%%H2%Fonts
  100.  
  101. PipeDream 4 can use either the system font, which this document is 
  102. using, or the RISC OS proportional fonts.  To select a font, use the 
  103. Font command (Ctrl-PFG) on the Print menu.  If the font selector shows 
  104. only system font then that is the only font that RISC OS has available 
  105. to it.

  107. We strongly recommend that you do not try to use the old "bitmap" font 
  108. manager with PipeDream 4.  If you want to use fonts we recommend that 
  109. you use the newer "outline" fonts and the font manager version 2.42 or 
  110. later.  This is especially true for using PipeDream 4's charts which 
  111. can use system font but which is happier using Homerton font.  Version 
  112. 2.44 is provided on this demonstration disc and will start up 
  113. automatically when you start PipeDream, if this or a later version is 
  114. not already running in the computer.

  116. If you do not have some outline fonts your Acorn dealer should be able 
  117. to advise on the best ways to acquire them.  The official Acorn way to 
  118. do it is to purchase the Acorn fonts disc.  There are also other 
  119. companies who supply fonts.

  121. The only fonts which are used in the examples are Trinity and Homerton. 
  122. If these fonts are not available the display of the examples will be 
  123. impaired.

  128. The demonstration version of PipeDream 4 has the spelling checker, file 
  129. saving, printing and searching disabled. Charts are overlaid with a 
  130. banner saying 'PipeDream 4 Demonstration version' and cannot be saved, 
  131. either to disc or back into the document from which they were made.

  133. PipeDream 4 has a two-way LOTUS 123 to PipeDream converter program, a 
  134. PipeDream to Impression converter and a Z88 filing system enabling easy 
  135. transfer to the Z88 and back again.  None of these are available on the 
  136. demonstration disk. The release copy of PipeDream 4 also includes many 
  137. data files which are not supplied on the demonstration disc.

  154. When using the demonstration version of PipeDream, please remember that 
  155. you don't have the PipeDream Tutorial and Reference guides available. 
  156. There is obviously no space here to explain the finer features and 
  157. facilities in PipeDream - you will only get the full benefit by working 
  158. with the manual, but the demonstration should give you some idea of 
  159. PipeDream's capabilities.

  232. Using CTRL key sequences. Alongside the commands in the menus you 
  233. will see a sequence of letters: you can give the command without 
  234. using the menu system by holding down the CTRL key, and, whilst it 
  235. is held down, pressing the letters shown. Delete word, for 
  236. example, is CTRL-T.
