  32. This file gives an exercise in creating 
  33. charts in PipeDream version 4.12 or 
  34. later.  It is best done in a wide screen 
  35. mode.  Try selecting mode 16 from the 
  36. mode entry on the palette icon at the 
  37. bottom-right of the screen.

  40. 1. Making a chart
  41.  
  42. To create a chart for this data mark a 
  43. block from A1 to D13 and select New 
  44. Chart from the Charts menu.
  45.  
  46. 2. Try changing the figures in the 
  47. spreadsheet to see the chart update 
  48. dynamically.

  50. 3. Different chart types
  51.  
  52. Investigate different chart types by 
  53. clicking on icons in the galleries in 
  54. the Chart window menu.  For the time 
  55. being, don't click on the penguins; 
  56. there are too many numbers in this file 
  57. to give sensible penguin graphics.
  58.  
  59. 4. Making selections.
  60.  
  61. Making selections and applying styles to 
  62. them is the way you can specify exactly 
  63. how the chart should look.  This is a 
  64. very important part of PipeDream's 
  65. charts and it is worth spending a little 
  66. time to understand it thoroughly.
  67.  
  68. First, to make a selection of something 
  69. in the chart, point at it and press the 
  70. left button on the mouse.  You should 
  71. see a dotted line around your selection 
  72. and the name of your selection will 
  73. appear in the top left of the Chart 
  74. window.  Try clicking at different 
  75. places in the chart to see what you can 
  76. select.  Also, try clicking in the 
  77. information box at the top left of the 
  78. window.  This will select the next 
  79. element in the chart.

  81. In a bar or line chart, try changing the 
  82. colour of Series 1 in the chart by 
  83. selecting it and using Fill Colour on 
  84. the Selection menu.
  85.  
  86. 5. Try adding your own labels to the 
  87. chart by using the New Text option.  
  88. You can move a label around by selecting 
  89. it and dragging it across the chart.  
  90. Keep it selected and change its style by 
  91. selecting the Font Selector from 
  92. Text Style...

  94. Try adding a live label.  Mark slot A15 
  95. (make sure you mark just the slot and 
  96. not the whole row) containing the text 
  97. "Average rainfall was..." and select Add 
  98. to chart from the PipeDream Chart menu.  
  99. This will add the label to the chart.  
  100. Change one of the values and see the 
  101. label change on the chart.

  103. 6. Try adding a backdrop to the chart.  
  104. Select the plot area and drag in the 
  105. file BackDrop from the Worldcup 
  106. directory on this disc.  BackDrop is an 
  107. ordinary draw file; you can create your 
  108. backdrops with any drawing or painting 
  109. package which saves draw or sprite 
  110. files.

  112. 7. Try dragging the legend box around.  
  113. The legend box will probably appear at 
  114. the right-hand side of the chart to 
  115. start with.

  117. 8. Try changing the font size of the 
  118. axis labels.  Click on the axis labels 
  119. to select the axis and change the font 
  120. in the Text style selector of the 
  121. Selection menu.

  123. 9. Try switching grid lines on and off.  
  124. Grid lines are attributes of the 
  125. vertical and horizontal axes.  To switch 
  126. horizontal grid lines on, these are 
  127. lines running from left to right, you 
  128. will need to select Axis 2, the vertical 
  129. axis.  Do this by clicking on one of the 
  130. numbers up the side of the chart. Then 
  131. bring up the axis dialogue box by 
  132. clicking on Axis in the Selection 
  133. sub-menu.

  135. On the right of the axis dialogue box 
  136. you will see a box called Major tick 
  137. interval.  In this box is a switch 
  138. called Grid lines.  Click on this to 
  139. switch it on or off and then click on OK 
  140. to redraw the chart.

  142. 10. Try changing the sizes of different 
  143. parts of the chart in the Options box 
  144. from the main chart menu.  To make way 
  145. for a larger title you might increase 
  146. the top margin.  To give a little more 
  147. room for labels across the bottom axis 
  148. you might increase the width of the 
  149. chart.
