Originally, a wall from the Middle Ages fortified with bastions stood behind the Mathias Church. The Fishermen's Bastion was built in neo-romanesque style between 1899-1905 based on the plans of Frigyes Schulek. In the past there was a fishmarket here, therefore this part of the fortification was protected by the guild of the fishermen. According to the tradition this is how the bastion got its name. Naturally, the present Fishermen's Bastion never had a defensive role, it is only a spectacular sightseeing terrace that was built to enrich the sight. Visitors can find the nicest view of the city from here.
