In the 13th century King BΘla IV had the church built to keep his pledge to have his daughter educated to be a nun here. Margaret lived here from the age of nine up to her death at the age of 29. After her death she was canonized. In 1545 the Dominican nuns saved the bones of Margaret from the Turks by taking them to Pozsony. During the Turkish domination the nunnery was completely destroyed and gradually disappeared. Later many graves were found here but Saint Margaret's empty tomb was excavated only in 1958.
