The 'Urßnia' Observatory on top of GellΘrt Hill was built in the years 1813-15 when it was inaugurated in the presence of three rulers: Caiser Ferenc I., King Sßndor I. and King Frigyes III. The observatory gained its fame as a result of the activities of Jßnos Pasquich. He started his work in 1818 with the most modern apparatus of the time. In 1849 in the siege of Buda the observatory was hit by a cannon ball. After this, in the age of reprisal the scientific research had to be interrupted for a long time. Later, the capital built a new observatory on SzΘchenyi Hill at 474 m height. The 'Urßnia' serves now as popular scientific monument for visitors.
