The fort on top of GellΘrt Hill was built by the Austrian army between 1850-54 after the suppression of the 1848-49 Hungarian War of Independence. Losing its military purpose by 1897, its walls were symbolically destroyed in some places under the influence of the public. Since 1964 it has served as a tourist sight. This is the place where fireworks are launched every year on Saint Stephen's Day, on 20th August.
