The galleries of the cave system were artificially formed in the Middle Ages with the linking up of old hollows of thermal waters and natural caves. The primary purpose of the system was military. Usually only the ceiling is natural rock, the side walls are built. About 80 wells were sunk for providing water supply. The cave system was used even in World War II as an air-raid shelter.
