The zoo was first opened on 9th August, 1876. One of the initiators was Jßnos Xantus the world famous nature biologist. The new, modernized and rebuilt zoo was reopened in 1912. Until 1921 it was run as a company limited, but then it was taken over by the capital city of Budapest. The establishment covers a huge area and offers the visitors to become acquainted with species of 600 different animals and 1,700 various plants.
