DEDICATION
~~~~~~~~~~
This program is dedicated to good programmers everywhere who take pride in their
craft and to whom small, fast executing, elegant programs are a delight.
SUMMARY
~~~~~~~
This program works by creating for the user small DOS batch files which it runs.
Little knowledge of DOS is required.
It takes no memory while the called program is executing so does not collide
with other programs. All screen updating is done by user friendly BIOS calls.
Designed to be easy to use and fast to run. It works with a mouse. Password
option prevents access to DOS or changes. Document files can be viewed from
menu. Pick list to assist setting up.
INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
■ Make the directory MD \MENU
■ Add the directory to the path
■ Copy the files into \MENU
■ Choose the screen option:
If you have a VGA screen and want
graphics mode use VGAMENU.BAT;
Otherwise use MENU.BAT.
■ Add VGAMENU or MENU to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file
PASSWORD
~~~~~~~~
To use the password option run the program PASSWORD from \MENU.
If this option is used users will not be able to exit the menu or modify it
without entering the password.
Individual items may be protected but the general restriction on exiting still
applies.
The password can be changed by running the password program again. To remove
the password use the Enter Key for the blank default password.
SETTING UP
~~~~~~~~~~
■ Making a new menu
The F2 key gives access to setup or to change the menu.
F10 saves and exits.
The main title can be overwritten as appropriate.
■ Sub menus
To create a sub menu use the program title field. If the only entry on the
line is a title this automatically makes a sub menu of the same name. Sub
menus may be nested up to 7 levels deep and can be password protected.
■ Menu items
Program Title
Enter the title you choose to use for the program.
Directory
Enter the directory where the executable program or batch file is located.
If you don't know where it is the F6 key can be used to give you a pick
list of directories or click on the mouse. Use the Up, Down, PgUp, PgDn
and Enter keys or mouse to select.
Command
Enter the EXE, COM or BAT file to be executed. Selection is available
similarly to the Directory entries. Parameters can be passed with the
name.
If you wish to enter 2 or more entries in the space available
you can simply use ctrl-Enter to split each line.
Options
There are 3 options - Aa, Ww, Pp (Not case sensitive)
A,a ASK
This allows the user to enter parameters when the menu item is chosen.
W,w WAIT
When the chosen item has finished running the user will be prompted to
press a key to continue. Useful when you wish to read a screen on
completion.
P,p PASSWORD
Request password for this item. No password will be requested unless
one has been previously setup as discussed earlier.
ATTACHING DOC FILES TO MENU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This can be done automatically. The documentation file should have the
extension 'DOC' and the first part should match the name of the program or batch
file listed under COMMAND.
To access the doc from the menu use the control key along with the letter of the
item to which it is attached. Otherwise you can use the right mouse button.
Doc files up to about 450K can be accessed this way. If the Doc file is too
large it will load as much of it as it can.
