  1.                       Peter's Second Letter

  3.         It is impossible to speak with any certainty as to either
  4. the date or the authorship of this Letter. From the beginning
  5. there have been doubts as to its genuineness and canonicity, and
  6. these are represented to-day in the differing judgements of
  7. critics equally able and sincere.
  8.  
  9.         It has, however, unquestionably had a place in the canon
  10. of the New Testament since the Council of Laodicea in 372 A.D.,
  11. and there is certainly no such decisive evidence against it as to
  12. warrant our omitting it from the New Testament.
  13.  
  14.         It would appear that the writer, whoever he was, had seen
  15. the Letter from Jude, and bore it in mind in this his plea for
  16. such character and conduct on the part of believers as were
  17. worthy of their faith and would prepare them for the Coming of
  18. the Lord. The whole Letter constitutes an earnest appeal for
  19. practical holiness.
