  1.              Paul's First Letter to the Thessalonians

  3.         During his second missionary tour (Ac 17), Paul came to
  4. Thessalonica and preached the Good News there with no little
  5. success. The city--which had had its name given it by Cassander,
  6. after his wife, the sister of Alexander the Great--was the most
  7. populous in Macedonia, besides being a "free city" and the seat
  8. of the Roman pro-consular administration. Its modern name is
  9. Saloniki.

  11.         Very soon the unbelieving Jews stirred up the mob against
  12. Paul and Silas, and dragged Jason before the magistrates. Hence
  13. the brethren sent the missionaries away by night to Beroea, being
  14. alarmed for their safety. As the Apostle was naturally anxious
  15. about the persecuted flock which he had been obliged to leave
  16. behind, he made two attempts to return to them, but these being
  17. frustrated (1Th 2:18), he then sent Timothy, from Athens, to
  18. inquire after their welfare and encourage them.

  20.         The report brought back was on the whole satisfactory,
  21. but left occasion for the self-defence, the warnings and the
  22. exhortations of this Letter, which was then sent from Corinth,
  23. probably in 53 A.D.
