1. COPY, ERASE, RENAME
-----------------------
IMPORTANT - Simulate Copy affects only COPY operations. Erasing and
renaming files will function normally with Simulate Copy on or off.
The number of files copied and the number of bytes copied will be
shown at the bottom of the copy screen and in the report files. To
find out how much space will be taken by a set of files, without
actually doing the copying, set Simulate Copy to Yes and activate the
Copy or WildCopy command.
A tag-Erase can only be aborted by the local machine.
When the right window is set to Local, with both windows logged to the
same drive, operations which copy, create, or erase files or
subdirectories, will cause the bytes available to not be updated
correctly--if there is any doubt, simply use the Log command to relog
each window.
2. REMOTE INSTALL
------------------
If Remote Install fails to operate, try lowering the baud rate of the
machine from which you are giving the Remote Install command.
If you have trouble attempting a Remote Install, the problem may be
caused by a conflict with TSR programs or network software. Reboot
the computer without any network or resident software and try the
Remote Install again. Two examples of types of programs that must be
removed from both computers before Remote Install will work are
DOSEDIT utility programs such as the one that comes with Brief, and
virus protection software.
Before attempting a Remote Install, you should set the Right Window
option to Remote, and the Transfer Mode to Serial, and save the
settings. If installing to a computer with a monochrome monitor,
before beginning the install attempt, you should restore the color
settings to the factory default black background with white text, and
save these settings as well.
3. TAGS
--------
Tags will be lost whenever you change the Sort Order to None, change
the option for Copy/Display Hidden Files, or turn Generate Report File
on or off. If you are not using the tags, it is best to clear them
with the UngroupTag command to avoid losing track of them in large
directories.
4. SHOWREPORT
--------------
The report file will not reflect any creation or deletion of
directories in the Ztree screen.
5. BATCH
---------
The maximum number of LapLink batch files on a machine is 93.
6. XPORT/IMPORT
----------------
Xport/Import will work only with the Right Window option in Remote.
This function is not used in Local mode. Also, the Right Window must
be logged to the directory to be Xported to, or Imported from.
A drive specification and a path specification (\) are required in
each line of Xport/Import pathfiles. Be careful not to use pathfiles
that are not proper pathfiles, or you may get undesirable results.
There is a slight but expected pause between copying of individual
files during Xport/Import while the system verifies the drives and
directories that the pathfile specifies. This pause does not occur
during other copy functions.
7. MACHINE-SPECIFIC INFORMATION
--------------------------------
Note: These problems are common to most parallel communications
programs. Certain laptops such as the Toshiba 1000 and 1200 cannot
connect with the Dell 220 in parallel mode. Serial mode must be used
with these combinations. Some laptops also cannot connect with each
other, and a few cannot communicate in parallel mode at all.
IBM PS/2 Model 70 & 80: In serial mode, on IBM PS/2 Model 70 and 80
the highest usable baud rate is 38.4k baud and the machine will be set
automatically to 3-wire mode (the ">" will not show in the command
line).
On computers with monochrome display adapters, the Color Display
options cannot be changed.
8. ERROR MESSAGES
------------------
Target disk full or write error: If you attempt to copy a directory
onto a file with the same name, you will receive a "Target disk full
or write error" message, indicating that the directory could not be
written. Return to the main screen and change your Copy instruction
to exclude this directory, or you can Rename the directory or the
file. Also, if you had Generate Report File set to Yes, it will be
closed but may be incomplete.
Cannot rename DIRNAME1 to DIRNAME2: You can rename directories only
if you are using a version of DOS that is 3.0 or later.
Cannot find LL3.EXE: This error can occur when you try to save your
option settings (or try to Remote Install) if you have renamed
LL3.EXE.
No Batch files found: This error can occur when you try to run a
batch file if you have renamed LL3.EXE.
If you get a critical error on the source drive during a copy, and
have to Fail to continue, it is possible that the file will not be
fully copied, but included in the count of files copied correctly.
Therefore, if you get critical errors, compare the source and target
files carefully.
9. GETTING TECHNICAL SUPPORT
-----------------------------
If you have a question or need Technical Support, the following
sources are available:
A. On GEnie type "LAPTOPS" to join the Laptops RoundTable. Then
enter the Laptops Bulletin Board and type "SET 7" to go to
Traveling Software Technical Support. Answers to the most
frequently asked questions can be found there. To sign up for
GEnie call (800) 638-9636 (Voice).
B. Traveling Software telephone Technical Support is available from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., (Pacific Time) Monday-Friday at (206)
483-8088. Please have your LapLink III serial number ready
before calling.
REMEMBER: Any hard disk--regardless of which software programs it
contains--should be checked on a regular basis with the DOS CHKDSK
command, or a disk maintenance utility. This is especially true for
portable and laptop computers; portable computers and their hard disks
are much more susceptible to damage simply because they are moved more
than desktop computers. The CHKDSK command checks a disk for bad
sectors and lost clusters, and reports its findings. The presence of
bad sectors or lost clusters on your disk is an indication of
developing trouble. See your DOS manual and computer dealer or user
group for more details.
