  26. WinZip 6.1 features the WinZip Wizard, an easy to use way to unzip
  27. and to install software distributed in Zip files.  WinZip 6.1
  28. automates the most common tasks involving Zip files using the
  29. standardized and familiar "wizard" interface.

  31. The WinZip Wizard interface is not targeted at experienced
  32. users, but is ideal for the rapidly growing number of PC users
  33. getting started on the Internet.  When these users gain confidence
  34. or want to use more advanced zipping features, the full WinZip
  35. Classic interface is just a click away.

  37. WinZip Wizard features include:
  38.  
  39. * Fast access to Zip files you downloaded:  no need to use the
  40.   Explorer or File Manager to hunt for the files you downloaded.
  41.   The Wizard lists the Zip files in your "Favorite Folders" by
  42.   date, with the most recent files first, so you can quickly
  43.   access the files you just downloaded.  A search feature will
  44.   find any Zip files "lost" on your hard drive.

  46. * Automatic installation of software distributed in Zip files:  if
  47.   a Zip file contains a "setup" or "install" program, the Wizard
  48.   will unzip the files, run the installation program, and clean up
  49.   temporary files.

  51. * Easy unzipping:  just click "Unzip Now" and the Wizard will
  52.   unzip your file and display the results in the Explorer, so you
  53.   can start working with the new files right away.

  57. WinZip Wizard vs Classic Interfaces:

  59. Both the WinZip Classic and Wizard interfaces are included in all
  60. versions of WinZip.  One click switches from the Wizard to the
  61. Classic interface and vice versa.

  63. * The WinZip Wizard interface is ideal if you want to know as
  64.   little about Zip files as possible and just "get started" with
  65.   the files you downloaded.  The wizard lets you click the "Next"
  66.   button a few times, and presto, your files are unzipped and/or
  67.   installed.  When you want to use more advanced zipping features,
  68.   you can easily switch to Classic mode.

  70. * The award-winning WinZip Classic interface, featuring tight
  71.   integration with the Windows 95 shell and versatile drag and
  72.   drop facilities, is great if you are comfortable using Windows

  80. WinZip 6.0a added improved Windows 95 drag and drop support.  WinZip 6.0
  81. introduced many Windows 95 features, including tight integration with
  82. the Windows 95 shell and Explorer-style dialog boxes.  Other
  83. enhancements included an improved interface to file viewers, an "Express
  84. Setup" option, and better support for virus scanners.  WinZip 5.6 added
  85. support for the popular Internet file formats TAR, gzip, and Unix
  86. compress.  WinZip 5.5 (16-bit version only) added the ability to
  87. install, try, and UNINSTALL software distributed in ZIP files.  This
  88. feature runs the install program in a ZIP, gives you a chance to try the
  89. program, and optionally deletes any new files, icons, program groups,
  90. and restores any altered INI files.

  94. You can now extract files from the main WinZip window using drag
  95. and drop to the Explorer or to the Windows 95 Desktop.  You can
  96. also drag files to an application shortcut to open the file with
  97. the shortcut, or drag files to a printer to print.

  115. Aside from the Windows 95 drag and drop improvements, WinZip 6.0a
  116. is a maintenance release, with support for programs that became
  117. available after WinZip 6.0 was shipped (Norton AntiVirus and Scan
  118. 95) and a few bug fixes.  Details are in the online help file.

  122. Windows 95-specific features include:
  123.  
  124. * Extract an archive to any folder via drag and drop without
  125.   leaving the Explorer.  Use the right mouse button to drag and
  126.   drop a ZIP from an Explorer window to any folder, then choose
  127.   "Extract to" from the context menu.  Remember to use the RIGHT
  128.   mouse button while dragging.
  129.  
  130. * Add files to an archive without leaving the Explorer.  Select
  131.   files in the Explorer and drag and drop them on a ZIP file in
  132.   the active Explorer window, in another Explorer window, or to a
  133.   ZIP file on the desktop.

  135. * Add selected files to a ZIP directly from the Explorer with
  136.   complete control over the options:  RIGHT-click on any file (or
  137.   selected group of files) in the Explorer and choose "Add To Zip"
  138.   from the context menu.  This provides a function similar to the
  139.   Add entry in the WinZip File Manager Extension.

  141. * Create archives in the Explorer (or on the desktop) by
  142.   RIGHT-clicking on the desktop and choosing "WinZip File" from
  143.   the "New" context menu entry.  You can then add files to the new
  144.   archive as described above.

  146. * Explorer-style mini-icons are displayed next to files in an
  147.   archive to help identify the file type.

  179. Other changes in WinZip 6.0:

  181. * The File Manager Extension is now implemented under Windows 95
  182.   and Windows NT.  You will have to choose File Manager
  183.   Configuration from the Options menu and check the second button
  184.   to activate this feature.  The File Manager Extension works the
  185.   same as it does under Windows 3.1.

  187. * WinZip now allows you to view multiple files in an archive
  188.   without first closing the first file (earlier versions of WinZip
  189.   restricted you to closing the first file before viewing the
  190.   second file).  Under Windows 95 the system "Quick View" program
  191.   is normally used as the "Default Association" used to view to
  192.   files not associated with another program.  Here are some
  193.   implementation details:  when you double click on a file in an
  194.   archive, WinZip extracts the file to the "Temp Folder"
  195.   specified in the Options/Folders dialog box.  WinZip then
  196.   runs the program associated with the file so you can view the
  197.   file.  When you later close the archive WinZip deletes the
  198.   temporary file(s).  If the file(s) have been modified WinZip
  199.   will give you an opportunity to update the archive with the
  200.   modified file.  The "Always on Top" flag is temporarily turned
  201.   off if it is on when you view a file, and is turned back on the
  202.   next time you activate WinZip.

  204. * The WinZip installation procedure now includes "Express Setup"
  205.   and "Custom Setup" options.  Custom Setup results in the "old"
  206.   WinZip 5.6 behavior.  Express Setup, the default, skips the
  207.   Program Locations dialog box, the File Manager Configuration
  208.   dialog box, and "Create Program Group" prompt.
  209.  
  210. * With more and more people using the Internet, virus scanning is
  211.   more important.  As a result, WinZip's support for virus
  212.   scanners has been improved.  The virus scanner parameters field
  213.   now supports two new special values:  %d represents the
  214.   folder containing the files to be scanned (without a trailing
  215.   *.*), and %f represents a temporary "report" file.  %wscan is a
  216.   special parameter that should be used only for McAfee's WSCAN
  217.   2.14 and compatible scanners.  WinZip now searches for and
  218.   supplies default parameters four additional scanners:  wscan,
  219.   f-prot, tbscan, and wfindvir.  The "Run as Iconized DOS Session
  220.   If Possible" checkbox has been replaced with the "Run Minimized"
  221.   checkbox, which is now used for both DOS and Windows scanners.

  225. Detailed list of changes since WinZip 6.1 beta 2a:

  227. Note:  these changes all involve issues related to the
  228. introduction of new features in earlier WinZip 6.1 beta test
  229. versions, and not affect WinZip 6.0 and 6.0a users.

  231.  - Beta 3b makes the Explorer context menus and some of the
  232.    Explorer drag and drop features work on systems that do not
  233.    have msvcrt40.dll installed.
  234.  
  235.  - Beta 3a fixes an internal error message when switching from
  236.    the Wizard to the Classic and back to the Wizard interface.
  237.  
  238.  - Several people reported that the Explorer context menus simply
  239.    did not show up in WinZip 6.1 beta 2a.  This issue should be
  240.    resolved, but if you encounter missing Explorer context menus,
  241.    please send mail to beta@winzip.com.

  243.  - The first version of beta 2a added a zero to any EXE file if
  244.    you right clicked on the EXE file in the Explorer.  This was
  245.    resolved in the version posted on March 4 and in this version.

  247.  - Only one "Extract To" item is displayed in the Explorer context
  248.    menus for Zip files.

  250.  - "Add To Zip" no longer shows up in Explorer context menus for
  251.    .zip files, it is only used for non-zip files.
