  4. WHAT IS SNAGIT/32?
  5.  
  6. SnagIt/32 is the Windows NT and Windows 95 version of the popular
  7. screen capture utility, SnagIt.  SnagIt has been providing Microsoft
  8. Windows users with an easy way to capture and print Windows screens
  9. since it was first released in 1991. In "Windows 3.1 Secrets," author
  10. Brian Livingston calls SnagIt "the print utility Microsoft Windows
  11. forgot."
  12.  
  13. SnagIt/32 allows Windows users to capture an entire screen, a portion of
  14. the screen, or a single window or icon.  SnagIt/32 also accepts input
  15. from the Windows clipboard, or a Windows bitmap (BMP) file.
  16.  
  17. Once captured, SnagIt/32 sends the image to the printer, the clipboard,
  18. or a file, depending on the output option specified.
  19.  
  20. Captured images can be pasted into other Windows applications such as
  21. word processors and desktop publishing programs via the Windows
  22. clipboard, or by saving the image to a graphic file and later importing
  23. the file into the desired application.
  24.  
  25. SnagIt/32 functionality can easily be added to other Windows applications
  26. since SnagIt/32 provides full DDE support.
  27.  
  28. SnagIt/32 also provides MAPI support which allows captured images to be
  29. sent easily in an e-mail message.

  32. SNAGIT/32 EVALUATION PACKAGE FILES

  34. Included in the SnagIt/32 archive file (SNAG3230.ZIP) are
  35. the following files:

  37. file_id.diz     Describes the contents of the SNAG3230.ZIP file
  38. readme.txt      This file.
  39. register.txt    SnagIt/32 registration form, in DOS text file format.
  40. setup.exe       SnagIt/32 installation and setup program.
  41. snagit32.exe    SnagIt/32 executable program.
  42. snagit32.hlp    SnagIt/32 Windows Help file.
  43. snagww.doc      Macro for incorporating SnagIt/32 into Microsoft Word
  44.                 for Windows 2.0 and 6.0.
  45. vendinfo.diz    Product information for distributors.

  48. SNAGIT/32 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  49.  
  50. In order to run SnagIt/32, your system must meet these specifications:
  51.  
  52. o  An IBM PC or compatible that meets the minimum hardware requirements
  53.    of Microsoft Windows NT or Windows 95;
  54.  
  55. o  Microsoft Windows NT 3.5x or Windows 95;
  56.  
  57. o  A mouse or other pointing device;
  58.  
  59. o  For printed output, a Windows-supported printer that can print
  60.    bitmaps. (This includes most of the laser, dot matrix and ink jet
  61.    printers that Windows supports.  Plotters cannot print bitmaps, and
  62.    so cannot print images captured with SnagIt/32.)
  63.  
  64. o  For Mail output, a 32 bit MAPI mail client (e.g. Microsoft Exchange)
  65.    must be installed and running.
  66.

  68. USING SNAGIT/32'S ON-LINE HELP
  69.  
  70. SnagIt/32's on-line Help system is compatible with the Windows Help
  71. subsystems.  The SnagIt/32 Help file contains all of the information
  72. you'll need to use SnagIt/32, except for the SnagIt/32 installation
  73. procedure. This (README.TXT) file describes how to install SnagIt/32.
  74.  
  75. To access SnagIt/32 Help, select Help from the SnagIt/32 menu bar, then
  76. Help Index from the drop-down menu.
  77.  
  78. To get a quick overview of SnagIt/32 essentials, select Quick Help from
  79. the Help menu.
  80.  
  81. To acquire information about your screen mode and printer type, select
  82. System Info from the Help menu.
  83.  
  84. When you register SnagIt/32, you will receive a software key that will
  85. disable the evaluation time-limit and remove all registration reminder
  86. screens.

  89. SNAGIT/32 SUPPORT
  90.

  99. In any communication with TechSmith regarding a problem with SnagIt/32,
  100. please clearly state the following:

  102. o  The product name and version number (SnagIt/32 3.0).
  103.  
  104. o  Your name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.
  105.  
  106. o  Your hardware configuration.
  107.  
  108. o  A description of the problem, and what you were trying to do when
  109.    the problem occurred.
  110.  
  111.  
  112. SNAGIT/32 FIXES AND ENHANCEMENTS
  113.  
  114. 3.0  Windows NT and Windows 95 version. Added JPEG file support,
  115.      compressed BMP file support, MAPI output, Print Screen Key
  116.      activation.
  117.  
  118.  
  119. SNAGIT/32 KNOWN PROBLEMS OR LIMITATIONS
  120.  
  121. o  SnagIt/32 hangs on mail output on Windows 95 if only 16-bit MS
  122.    Mail has been configured (i.e. MAPI is in use, but neither MS
  123.    Exchange or any other 32-bit MAPI mail client has been configured).
  124.  
  125. o  The captured cursor type is always the arrow cursor.
  126.  
  127. o  One viewer (LView Pro 1.C/32) complains when loading a JPEG
  128.    file output by SnagIt.  The viewer says "premature end of JPEG file"
  129.    but will still view the file successfully.
  130.  
  131. o  The Include Cursor option is not active for the Last Active Window
  132.    input selection.
  133.

  135. INSTALLING SNAGIT/32
  136.  
  137. The SnagIt/32 installation program SETUP.EXE is a Microsoft Windows
  138. application.  You must have Windows NT or Windows 95 installed prior
  139. to installing SnagIt/32.  To install SnagIt/32, perform the following
  140. steps:
  141.  
  142. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  143.  
  144. 2. Insert the SnagIt/32 diskette into a floppy drive.
  145.  
  146. For Windows 95 users:
  147.  
  148. 3. From the Start menu, select Run
  149.  
  150. For Windows NT users:
  151.  
  152. 3. From the Program Manager menu bar, choose File, and select Run from
  153. the drop down menu.
  154.  
  155. For all users:
  156.  
  157. 4. In the dialog box, enter:
  158.         a:\setup
  159.    (If you are installing SnagIt/32 from a diskette drive other than the
  160.    A drive, you will need to change the drive letter in the command
  161.    line above.)
  162.  
  163. 5. Click on the OK button.
  164.  
  165. 6. When you have finished entering the setup information, click on the
  166.    Install button to install SnagIt/32.
  167.  
  168.  
  169. UNINSTALLING SNAGIT/32
  170.  
  171. If after installing SnagIt/32, you find it necessary to remove SnagIt/32
  172. from your computer, perform the following steps:
  173.  
  174. 1. Start Windows, if you haven't already done so.
  175.  
  176. For Windows 95 users:
  177.  
  178. 2. From the Start Menu, select Settings and then Taskbar. Now configure
  179.    your Start Menu Programs by clicking on the Advanced button.
  180.  
  181. 3. Find the program group that SnagIt/32 was installed in. Click once on
  182.    the SnagIt/32 filename to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm
  183.    that you wish to delete the program item.
  184.  
  185. 4. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when installing
  186.    SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  187.  
  188.    Follow step #2 and then find the Startup group. Click once on the
  189.    SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  190.    you wish to delete the program item.
  191.  
  192. 5. Run Windows Explorer and change to the directory that you installed
  193.    SnagIt/32 in. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and SnagIt32.HLP.

  196. For Windows NT users:
  197.  
  198. 2. In Program Manager, find the program group that SnagIt/32 was
  199.    installed in. Click once on the SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it.
  200.    Press the delete key. Confirm that you wish to delete the program
  201.    item.
  202.  
  203. 3. If you selected "Start SnagIt/32 when Windows Starts" when installing
  204.    SnagIt/32, delete SnagIt/32 from the Startup group.
  205.  
  206.    In Program Manager, find the Startup group. Click once on the
  207.    SnagIt/32 icon to highlight it. Press the delete key. Confirm that
  208.    you wish to delete the program item.
  209.  
  210. 4. Run File Manager and change to the directory that you installed
  211.    SnagIt/32 in. Delete the files SnagIt32.EXE and SnagIt32.HLP.

  214. STARTING SNAGIT/32
  215.  
  216. To start SnagIt/32, double-click on the SnagIt/32 icon in the Accessories
  217. group.  (If you specified a group other than Accessories during SnagIt/32
  218. installation, look in that group for the SnagIt/32 icon.)
  219.  
  220. Double-clicking on the SnagIt/32 icon will execute SnagIt/32 and bring
  221. it to the foreground in its maximized form.  When SnagIt/32 is maximized,
  222. you may change any of the setup options (input, output, format, etc.)
  223. from the SnagIt/32 menus.
  224.  
  225. You can also invoke SnagIt/32 (that is, instruct SnagIt/32 to capture an
  226. image) while it is maximized, though it will usually be more convenient
  227. to minimize SnagIt/32 before doing your screen captures.
  228.  
  229. If you selected the "Load when Windows starts" checkbox during
  230. installation, SnagIt/32 will start automatically the next time you start
  231. Windows.
  232.  
  233.  
  234. SNAGIT/32 DEFAULT SETTINGS
  235.  
  236. When you install SnagIt/32, it uses the following default options:
  237.  
  238. o  Input is set to Screen.  This means that when SnagIt/32 is invoked, it
  239.    will capture the entire Windows desktop.
  240.  
  241. o  Output is set to Printer.  This means that when SnagIt/32 is invoked,
  242.    it will send the captured image to the Windows default printer for
  243.    printing.
  244.  
  245. o  Format is set to Color.  This means that SnagIt/32 will capture the
  246.    image with the screen colors intact.  (In most cases you can print
  247.    images using this format setting, even if your printer is not a color
  248.    printer. For additional information about SnagIt/32 format options,
  249.    see the Format options topic in the SnagIt/32 Help file.)

  251. o  Scale is set to 1.00.  This means that SnagIt/32 will output the image
  252.    at the same pixel size as it appears on the Windows screen. This
  253.    setting may result in a smaller printed image than you want; to
  254.    adjust the image size, see the Scale topic in the SnagIt/32 Help file.
  255.  
  256. Refer to the SnagIt/32 Help file for additional information on setting
  257. SnagIt/32's input, output, format and other options.
  258.  
  259. You can tell which settings SnagIt/32 is using by looking at the bottom
  260. of the SnagIt/32 window when the program is maximized.
  261.

  263. INVOKING SNAGIT/32 WITH <CTRL><SHIFT><P>
  264.  
  265. Once you have SnagIt/32's parameters set as you want them, you are ready
  266. to perform screen captures with SnagIt/32.
  267.  
  268. The default hot-key sequence for invoking SnagIt/32 is <Ctrl><Shift><P>.
  269. When you press these keys, SnagIt/32 will capture an image (determined
  270. by the input parameter you selected), and send that image to the output
  271. device you selected. To invoke SnagIt/32 using a different hotkey
  272. combination, see the Change Hotkeys topic in the SnagIt/32 Help file.

  275. USING THE MOUSE TO SELECT IMAGES
  276.  
  277. You will need a mouse or other pointing device with SnagIt/32.
  278. The left and right mouse buttons work as follows:
  279.  
  280. Left Button     Selects SnagIt/32 menu options, and selects screen
  281.                 regions and windows to capture.
  282.  
  283. Right Button    Cancels a region or window selection, if you press it
  284.                 before you finish making the selection (that is, before
  285.                 you release the left mouse button).

  288. REGISTERING SNAGIT/32
  289.  
  290. To Begin Registration:
  291.  
  292. 1. Select the Help menu.
  293.  
  294. 2. Select Begin Registration from the menu.
  295.  
  296. 3. In the registration dialog box, enter the requested information in
  297.    the fields provided.
  298.  
  299.    NOTE: You must specify a name or company name when you register. Your
  300.          registered copy will be personalized for that name ONLY. You
  301.          will NOT be able to change that name after you have registered
  302.          the software.
  303.  
  304. 4. When you are finished, select OK. This will create a text file called
  305.    REGISTER.TXT in the SnagIt/32 default directory. This is your
  306.    registration and order form.  It includes a current price sheet.
  307.  
  308. 5. Windows Notepad will now open REGISTER.TXT automatically, allowing you
  309.    to edit and or print the registration form.  While you are editing,
  310.    please complete any blank items, including quantities, totals, and
  311.    payment information.
  312.  
  313. 6. Return the registration form, with payment, to TechSmith Corporation
  314.    by any of the methods described on the form.  Upon receipt of your
  315.    order, TechSmith will generate your registration key. The key will
  316.    then be sent to you by the method of your choice, either email, fax
  317.    or postal delivery.
  318.  
  319. To complete the registration process when you receive your key:
  320.  
  321. 1. Select the Help menu.
  322.  
  323. 2. Select Finish Registration from the menu.
  324.  
  325. 3. Enter your registration key, exactly as it is shown, in the field
  326.    provided.
  327.  
  328. 4. Press OK.
  329.  
  330. Your software is now registered!  All the registration reminder screens
  331. and software expiration dates will be removed. If you have any additional
