  2. WELCOME to POWERTOYS
  3. ---------------------
  4. UPDATED: 7/19/95.

  6. This folder contains a series of "PowerToys"-- UI enhancements for 
  7. advanced Win95 users-- that can be easily installed on any recent build
  8. of Windows 95.
  9.  
  10. These enhancements were developed by members of the Microsoft Win95 team, 
  11. and are now being made available to Win95 users at no cost. Note.. these are
  12. not part of any shipping retail product at this point in time, and therefore
  13. are not supported through any official support channels. Use "at your own risk".
  14.  
  15. The contents of this folder will be updated over time as we make enhancements
  16. to the utilities you see here now, and as we add new utilities for people to 
  17. try out. Stop back every now and then and see what's changed.

  19. Here's what's available now:

  21. *** SEND TO ANY FOLDER
  22.  
  23. This utility adds an "Any Folder" entry to your win95 "Send To" menu. You can
  24. then right-click on any file or directory, choose "Send To> Any Folder" and
  25. type an MS-DOS path to move or copy the file into. High-end users who miss
  26.  the File Manager's Move and Copy dialogs will love Send To Any Folder.

  29. *** FAST FOLDER CONTENTS
  30.  
  31. With this handy-dandy context-menu extension, when you right-click on any 
  32. folder or other container, you'll get a cascade menu that shows you all the
  33. contents of that folder, one-level deep. It works on shortcuts-to-folders,
  34. too.

  37. *** QUICK CD
  38.  
  39. Quick CD is a taskbar notification icon that makes controlling audio CDs a
  40. breeze. When an audio CD is in your drive, Quick CD gives you convenient 
  41. single-click play/pause control, a tooltip that tells you which track and 
  42. time you're on, and a right-click menu that provides commands for starting,
  43.  stopping, ejecting and moving around the tracks on your CD.

  46. *** CABFILE VIEWER
  47.  
  48. You know those *.CAB files that you'll find on the Win95 CD and floppies? 
  49. (These are files containing one or more compressed files.) Well, with the
  50. CABFILE Viewer shell extension, you can browse right into a CAB file and
  51. see all of its contents, and perform normal shell operations on the files
  52. inside.

  55. *** ROUND CLOCK
  56.  
  57. This version of CLOCK.EXE takes advantage of win95's region windows, so your
  58. analog clock will be round, just like a real clock would. (Note.. you just 
  59. need to copy this EXE to use the clock. No setup file is provided.)

  62. *** EXPLORE FROM HERE   
  63.  
  64. This is a simple custom command for all folders and containers that lets you
  65. right-click and choose "Explore from Here" to get an Explorer window that has
  66. the target folder as its root.

  69. *** SHORTCUT TARGET MENU 
  70.  
  71. Finally, you can get the properties for a shortcut's target just by 
  72. right-clicking the shortcut. This extension will add to any shortcut's
  73. context menu the complete context menu of its target.

  76. *** XMOUSE 
  77. For all of the CS majors in the audience-- make the focus follow the mouse
  78. without clicking, a la X Windows. TIP: To turn it off, use the control panel.

  81. *** QUICKRES

  83. Here's one we wish was built right in: change DPI and bit depth without 
  84. rebooting. QuickRes lives in the notification area-- just click on it to
  85. select your new display settings.

  88. HOW TO INSTALL
  89. --------------
  90. Installation of any of these is easy. First, copy down powertoy.exe and place
  91. it in a new folder (e.g. powertoys) and run "powertoy.exe".  Then, right-click
  92. on the Setup Information file (INF file.. these look like a text file with a 
  93. little gear on them) for the extension you'd like to install, and choose the
  94. INSTALL command. When you're done installing the extensions you want, you can
  95. delete the folder. It's that easy.
