FontLook is a utility to display on screen and print samples of any or all of
your Windows fonts. It runs under Windows 3.1 or Windows 95.
To install the program, simply copy FONTLOOK.EXE to any directory. There are
no other files necessary.
To run the program in Windows 3.1, choose File Run from the Windows Program
Manager and enter FONTLOOK, preceded by the path name if necessary. Of
course, if you plan to use it often it is more convenient to add it to your
Program Manager desktop and run it from the icon. In Windows 95, you may
run it by any of the methods available to run programs (placing it on the
Start button menu, creating a shortcut on the desktop, etc.)
The Main Window
You may scroll through the list of available fonts to see samples on the
screen. The size of the sample may be changed by typing in the size box
underneath the sample window or by using the small arrows to increment and
decrement the size by one point. You may see the font in bold and/or italic by
checking those boxes; this will also affect the "Large Sample", "Font Map" and
"Show All Selected" windows. The sample text box is editable just by clicking
on it; you may delete and add text using normal Windows editing methods.
Edited sample text will be retained only for the duration of the program; it
will not be saved when you exit.
Underneath the sample window the program shows the type of the font (TrueType,
Adobe Type 1, or printer-resident) and the styles available.
Other Display Windows
The other display windows are accessible with the tab control at the bottom of
the screen, or by pressing the Alt key with the highlighted letter (i.e.,
Alt-F for the Font Map). These windows are:
1) Large Sample: Displays, as you might guess, a larger sample of the
currently highlighted font. It defaults to 24 points but may be changed. The
text in this window is also editable.
2) Font Map: Shows a character map of the currently highlighted font, similar
to the Character Map utility distributed with Windows, with the additional
capability of displaying the font in bold, italic or both.
3) Show All Selected: Displays a line of text in each of the currently
selected fonts. You may scroll through this window with the scroll bar or by
using the PgUp, PgDn, Home and End keys. This window is not editable. Please
note that if you have many fonts selected, this window may be slightly slow to
display and scroll.
Edit Sample Text Window
In this window, you may edit the sample text for the different point sizes
used on the Full Page Sample printout, as well as the text used in the screen
samples and the title used on the pages of the Sample Text printout
Printing
To print, select fonts using the usual Windows selection methods (i.e.
Ctrl-Click to choose several fonts, Shift-Click to choose a continuous range).
If you want to print all your fonts, click on Select All. There are four types
of printouts available, which are selected in the Print Options box:
1) Sample Text: Three lines for each font, as many fonts as will fit on each
page, at the point size of your choice. The first two lines show the alphabet
in upper and lower case, numbers and symbols. The third line uses the text you
enter as Sample Text in the Edit Sample Text window. A title for these pages
may be entered in the Edit Sample Text window on the Sample Title line; this
is useful if you are printing a particular group of fonts and want to label
it.
2) Character Charts: A full-page chart for each font, showing each
character and its ASCII code number, printed at 16 points
3) Full Page Sample: This has three parts:
a) One-line samples at sizes from 8 to 60 points
b) Three-line samples (as in #1) including regular, bold, italic and bold
italic, all at 12 points
c) All extended characters
4) Text Paragraphs: A paragraph printed at user-selectable sizes from 7 to 14
points, one page per font. Select the sizes you want in the Paragraph Point
Size box. The program will only print as many paragraphs as can fit on a page;
if you select too many sizes you may not get all of them.
You may choose any or all printout each time you print by checking the
appropriate box(es). If you choose more than one, they will be printed in the
order listed above.
For all printouts except #3, the bold and italic check boxes in the Print
Options box will be observed.
For printout #1, you may choose a point size from 1 to 60 points. Point sizes
may be incremented in 1-point intervals using the arrows next to the point
size box. However, be aware that choosing a large size may result in an
overflow which will halt printing.
A progress window will be displayed while printing. This has a Cancel button
in case you decide to abort the print job. Response to the Cancel button is
not always immediate but should be within one page.
You may select a printer with the Print Setup option. If you change printers,
the font list will be rebuilt to reflect the fonts available in the selected
printer.
The Heading Font option allows you to select the font to be used for headings
on the printouts. Specifically, this is used for the font names on #1, ASCII
codes on #2, section headings on #3 and paragraph headings on #4. As most
headings are printed at 10 points, you should choose a font that is easily
readable at that size. Choosing this option will select the currently
highlighted font as the heading font, subject to your confirmation. The
heading font defaults to Arial if it is found on your system; otherwise
another font will be chosen (most likely the first one listed in your WIN.INI
file).
