  2.   The following is a listing of known hacks of BLASTER Master:

  4.   Version 3.???
  5.   -------------
  6.     Someone re-zipped an early version of BLASTER Master that contained
  7.     a virus. It was an incomplete file with mixed versions of the
  8.     individual text-based programs. When ran, it would delete everything
  9.     in the current directory and any subdirectories below it. It only
  10.     appeared on a couple of east coast BBS's before it disappeared.

  12.   Version 4.5
  13.   -----------
  14.     Someone took v4.1 and used a sector editor to change the version
  15.     number to v4.5. They also changed the "nag screen" and WHATS.NEW
  16.     file to state that the registration amount had changed to $5.00
  17.     and the time limitation was now 125 seconds. Very few people fell
  18.     for this, but some did. I still occasionally get a letter with a
  19.     five dollar bill in it, which I promptly return. I believe this
  20.     hack originated somewhere in the Houston, Texas area. At least
  21.     that was where I first heard of it. I have received "registrations"
  22.     from Houston, San Antonio, Oregon, Washington and Canada. I debated
  23.     long and hard with myself as to whether or not to just send these
  24.     few folks the registration information. I finally came to the
  25.     conclusion that it would not be fair to the people that have helped
  26.     to support BLASTER Master and make it what it is today.

  28.   Version 4.75 "registered"
  29.   -------------------------
  30.     Someone started circulating a supposedly "registered" copy of v4.75
  31.     in the clandestine pirate BBS world. Within hours of it appearing,
  32.     I started getting phone calls from pirates with crashed hard drives.
  33.     Even though these individuals were stealing the bread right from
  34.     my children's mouths, I still felt bad about it. There was a text
  35.     file included that described the de-protection of BMASTER.EXE. One
  36.     of the things mentioned was that I used a "lame file size and date
  37.     check protection". That is NOT part of the protection, that is the 
  38.     routine used to update the file directory. Sooner or later, this 
  39.     hack WILL DESTROY YOUR FILE ALLOCATION TABLE. It is just a matter of 
  40.     when. If you do not believe me, try changing the file date of 
  41.     BMASTER.EXE and see if it does not still run. It will. 
  42.     Ironically, the "cracker" called ME a jerk. One of the immutable laws 
  43.     of physics is that "what goes around, comes around".
