NOTE: Thank you for all the suggestions! I am trying to implement most
of them as time and health permit. Besides that I have to get a
game in every now and then.
GREETINGS! I am ICS Azorduldu, please do have a look at the gilchess
program and let me know what you think, good or bad.
Currently this is the only documentation for the gilchess program.
Gilchess was started only a few weeks ago and for that reason, it is very
likely that many bugs still exist. Because I'm still playing around with
how I want things to appear, some things may be annoying but I have used
the program to play and win several games already so give it a try and then
send me some mail at gjroper@ouray.denver.colorado.edu and let me know
what you did and didn't like and more importantly what changes you'd like
to see.
In this brief text I will try to explain the important things you need to
know to get it running. Gilchess is written in Borland C++ 4.0 under
MS Windows 3.1 on an IBM clone with an 80486 cpu. My name is Gilbert J.
Roper, Age 32, I just earned a degree in Computer Science from UCD and
am currently looking for work in Denver, Colorado. I am eager to hear some
feedback so I can attempt changes. If you use the program while I'm
logged onto the ICS, please TELL me something, that would be cool, thanks.
The video mode I used to created the program in Windows is 800x600 and
65,536 colors. If you are able to do this I highly recommend this mode
or a higher resolution mode. Currently it is not designed to work well
for 640x480 mode, but if there is enough interest I could make such
changes. Also, the font I use is an OEM fixed font and will not display
correctly if you have your mode set to large fonts, though some have said
it works ok with large fonts, this has not been my experience.
The first thing you need to do is edit the file GILCHESS.CNF which looks
like this:
COM3 <----- Fill this information out to fit
COM3:19200,n,8,1 <----- to fit your systems requirements.
atdt6290134 <----- Phone number to access the internet.
telnet 164.58.253.10 5000 <----- Telnet to current ICS site.
ICSalias <----- Your ICS alias
ICSpassword <----- Your ICS password
The first two lines are extremely important as they are used to configure
and open your communications port.
The program should start up with a maximized window and I suggest it be kept
that way. There are ALOT of buttons on the top and each of them has a short
message on the status bar at the bottom of the screen describing its
function. Some of the buttons will not work for you, don't worry about them
as I'll remove them later. One button you will need to use alot is the 4th
from the left, it is the clear screen button because I do not currently
clear the screen or scroll it. There are alot of buttons just for use on
the ICS because I don't like to type the same things over and over. First
thing to do if you get no error messages on startup, is to choose the
dial the phone button. From there you can use the ICS button to telnet
there if you have edited the GILCHESS.CNF file correctly. Flipping the
board button is also important when you first start a game, check to see
if you need to flip it or not. To move the pieces just click on the piece
and the square you want to move it to. If you get this out of sequence
you'll be making illegal moves until you get it back into the correct order.
(if you didn't understand my last just keep clicking!)
LAST MINUTE THINGS:
gilchess.zip - This zip file didn't contain an important dll which is needed
for the program to run.
gilches1.zip - This is the same as gilchess.zip but includes the needed
bwcc.dll file.
gilches2.zip - As far as I'm concerned the above files can be deleted as
this contains all the needed files and some additional
changes to the program.
- Added a full screen/half screen toggle for when observing games.
- Added several more ICS specific command buttons.
gilchess3.zip - Current 9-8-94
- Added a blinking cursor, a few more buttons and some other small fixes.
gilchess4.zip - Current 9-10-94
- Fixed the problem with the dial string not being long enough, it should
handle a dial string up to 80 chars long now.
gilchess5.zip - Current 9-10-94
- Clocks should count down during a game and when observing a game. If it
doesn't count down then there is a toggle for the count down clocks to get
them back in sinc with the program.
- Added a few more ICS specific buttons.
gilchess6.zip - Current 9-22-94
- A few more buttons
- Added several new strings to the gilchess.cnf file, so you will have to
modify this file before using this version. In other words, don't use
the old cnf file.
- Logon and password buttons to your internet host added.
- Added an autoflag toggle which is true by default.
- The board should flip to the correct position when you start a new game.
- The right mouse button now does a refresh, you may need to click it once
when you start a new game to make sure what color you are.

WARNING: PLEADING FOLLOWS...

NOTE!!! This only started awhile ago and needs alot of work, I just thought
if someone likes the pieces they could use this as an alternative. Any
feedback will be greatly appreciated.
I did not write this program to compete with other ICS interfaces, I chose
to do it because I was tired of having my monitor switch video modes using
giics for DOS. I also didn't like the bright text colors used in giics.
If you use this program for a long time, and you have a couple unwanted
dollars laying around, feel free to send them to the following address:

Good games to you! It's likely we'll meet over the board at some point, if
we haven't already. Take care, later.
