  12. BETA 6 didn't sound so good, so I figure it's time to lay 1.2 to a rest with
  13. this version.  1.3 will be a complete rewrite of 1.2, and will be available
  14. for the same low price of $29.95.

  16. You'll find that even though this is a final version, there is no online help
  17. within the application.  This textfile is the documentation.

  19. The application set-up and usage should be straightforward.

  23. CHANGES from BETA 4/Private 5:

  25. FTP control is now as reliable as your socket connection.  Thanks to all the
  26. users who submitted bug reports!

  28. If you had previously installed the Microsoft Internet Control Pack (BETA 2)
  29. to use an older beta version, you can remove it.

  36. *  EMULive 1.2b4 now supports the Connectix Color QuickCAM(tm) using the bundled
  37. QuickPICT(tm) 2.0 application.

  39. *  Due to a problem with the Connectix QPict32(tm) application with monochrome
  40. QuickCAMs, EMULive 1.2b4 now uses Jasc(tm) Paint-Shop Pro for image conversion.
  41. This slows down a single frame capture to about 25 seconds.
  42. Not all that bad considering it'll mean less mail for me from quickcam users ;-)

  44. *  Win/TV Support in BETA 3 was buggy due to a lack of quality Jamaican Blue
  45. Mountain(tm) coffee.  I now have enough to last me though BETA 5 and EMULive
  46. PRO testing trials... hopefully this kind of issue won't arise again.

  50. *  Overall speed was improved.  You should see a minimum of one additional frame
  51. per minute.

  53. EMULive is an entry-level webcam product that provides support for third-party
  54. applications.  This enables a wide variety of devices and/or software products
  55. to interoperate with EMULive and your website.  As this is not an integrated
  56. package, you will find excellent value for such low cost software.

  58. I have been spending alot of time on EMULive PRO.  To all users who sent me
  59. feature wish-lists, expect the unexpected: they're all in there! ALL OF THEM.
  60. With this new integrated technology you can expect an average of about 15 frames
  61. per minute on a standard dialup 28.8 connection.  On an intranet, I've peaked
  62. out at 49 frames per second with a source image size of 80x60.  With a 160x120
  63. image I saw a maximum of 40 fpm.  This includes all the nifty image processing
  64. I stuffed into each picture.  Once the image is stored on your website's FTP
  65. server, you can PUSH them to a browser using CGI or comparable scripting
  66. languages.  It looks great and it's all in one nice tight 32-BIT package.

  81. If you follow the instructions properly, you'll add live pictures to your
  82. website in under 5 minutes!
  83.  
  84. To be "live" means you need a dedicated machine feeding your website with
  85. updated information.  Most scenarios involve specialized hardware and
  86. software that grab images and capture sound, and then transfer them to the
  87. website where a host application compresses them and then "feeds" it to a
  88. proprietary application running on the client machine.  This involvement
  89. requires mucho investment and time.  EMULive allows any user to add a simple
  90. live webcam to their homepage or website by using their local computer (and a
  91. connected capture device) to capture, convert (when necessary), and transfer
  92. an image for the rest of the world to see.

  94. THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO RUN EMULIVE

  102. INSTALLATION
  103. ************

  105.         Run the setup application and install to any directory.
  106.  
  107. CONFIGURING
  108. ***********
  109. Once EMULive is running, click the CONFIGURE button to open the settings screen
  110. Specify the IP address of the FTP server that you use to update your website,
  111. as well as the path (the complete path where EMULive will copy the image files
  112. to).  Enter your username and password, and modify the capture settings
  113. according to taste.  The refresh delay setting specifies how many seconds to
  114. wait in between image updates, you have a maximum of 30 seconds between each
  115. update.  The capture delay setting is to speed up (or slow down) the program
  116. to compensate for slower machines tight on memory that constantly swap to disk.
  117.  
  118. At this point, you should have your capture program open (and paint shop pro if
  119. applicable).
  120.  
  121. If you use a MONOCHROME Connectix QuickCam(tm), you should be using QuickPict
  122. for Windows95 version 1.1 or better.  Do **NOT** enable timed capture - EMULive
  123. has its' own method of capturing pictures.  In this release (1.2b4), you also
  124. need to use Paint-Shop-Pro for image conversion.
  125.  
  126. If you use a COLOR Connectix QuickCam(tm), you need to use the bundled QuickPICT
  127. 2.0 application.
  128.  
  129. If you have a Hauppauge Win/TV, you must tuner application v3.84.06 or better
  130. it's located at:  ftp://hauppauge.htp.com/hcw/celeb/
  131. If you don't have a tuner application, I'm not sure what you're using... You
  132. should pick up a copy of EMULive PRO when it becomes available.

  134. Win/TV support uses direct jpeg and requires no conversion.

  136. USAGE NOTES

  139. Once you enter in the details and press the RUN button, do not disturb the
  140. environment or click the mouse.  This can confuse EMULive as it expects to
  141. have control of an application's window.  In some cases where you must make
  142. a small change to a running application (change the channel on win/tv cards
  143. or enlarge quickcam capture resolution), your best "window" to do this is
  144. when EMULive begins uploading the image file, as it doesn't call out to other
  145. applications.  Systems using EMULive 1.2 should be considered dedicated to
  146. the task while running.

  148. HOW DOES IT WORK?

  151. EMULive takes control of your capture application, grabs a frame and then
  152. saves it to disk.  Once saved, EMULive copies it to a directory on your
  153. providers' FTP server which is used by your website.

  155. Within a "live" page on your website, you link the image file so that
  156. it is shown in-line the page.  For Netscape 2.0 users, you force a page reload
  157. so that every time the page is reloaded, it includes the latest updated picture!
