  1. READ ME for WSTBar95 BETA 1.2 (3/24/1996)
  2. -----------------------------------------
  3. This is BETA version 1.2 of WSTBar95. There are several new features that
  4. have been added since version 2.61. They are:
  5. - improved task switching
  6. - an option to make the toolbar "not on top"
  7.  
  8. This BETA version does not include the following options that are still
  9. being developed and will be added in the next BETA release:
  10. - help tips for the toolbar
  11. - custom icon selection from an EXE or DLL file
  12. - command line arguements
  13.  
  14. WSTBar is a MS Windows95 application that displays a horizontal or vertical
  15. toolbar (TOPMOST) that holds command buttons for INTERNET applications. 
  16. The toolbar is setup to run the following applications:
  17.  
  18. Trumpet Winsock
  19. Web Browser
  20. E-Mail
  21. News
  22. FTP
  23. Gopher
  24. Telnet
  25. Finger
  26. Internet Phone
  27. IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
  28. User1
  29. User2
  30. User3
  31. User4
  32. User5

  34. The application that WSTBar runs when a command button is clicked is
  35. user-defined. The file WSTBAR.INI hold references (disk, path and EXE name)
  36. for your INTERNET application preferences. Once WSTBar is installed, use the
  37. WSTBAR Setup program (installed in the WSTBar Program Group) to edit the 
  38. settings in WSTBAR.INI (located in the \WINDOWS directory).

  40. To Unload the toolbar
  41. ---------------------
  42. The toolbar can be unloaded by right-mouse clicking on any of the toolbar
  43. buttons. When you right-mouse click on a toolbar button a popup menu is 
  44. displayed. The following options are available:
  45.         Unload - unloads the toolbar and saves the toolbar position
  46.         Quit   - unloads the toolbar without saving the toolbar position
  47.         Setup  - runs the WSTBar setup program
  48.         About  - displays the WSTBar About dialog box

  50. Installation
  51. ------------

  53. NOTE: This application requires Windows95
  54.  
  55. 1. Un-ZIP the contents of WSTBAR95.ZIP into a temporary directory
  56. 2. Start Microsoft Windows95
  57. 3. From the , select the File menu and choose Run
  58. 4. Type <drive>:<path>SETUP.EXE and press ENTER. Where <drive> and <path>
  59.    is the disk drive and path where you have placed the un-zipped files.

  61. The files required for WSTBar will be copied to a directory on your
  62. computer (C:\WSTBAR by default), and the setup program will create a 
  63. program group for WSTBar. At this point, you MUST use the WSTBar Setup
  64. program to edit WSTBAR.INI (located in the \WINDOWS) directory.

  66. Setting the toolbar location
  67. ----------------------------
  68. WSTBar95 includes options for either a horizontal or vertical
  69. toolbar. The type of toolbar is specified in WSTBAR.INI (BarType).
  70.  
  71. WSTBar also allows you to set the location of the toolbar using settings in
  72. WSTBAR.INI or by dragging the toolbar. The toolbar position is specified in
  73. pixels. The toolbar can also be sized by dragging any side or corner of the
  74. toolbar. When you exit WSTBar (right mouse click on any button) the current
  75. toolbar position is saved to WSTBAR.INI so that the next time WSTBar is 
  76. loaded, it will appear in the same position.

  78. Here are two typical settings for the toolbar position.

  87. Selecting your applications
  88. ---------------------------
  89. You can select the applications that WSTBar95 will run when the buttons on the
  90. toolbar are clicked. Replace the path and filename of the INTERNET 
  91. applications with the path and filename of your INTERNET applications. This
  92. version doesn't support passing command parameters along the the application that
  93. is to run. This will be supported in a future release of WSTBar95.

  95. Setting the number of toolbar buttons
  96. -------------------------------------
  97. You can customize the number of toolbar buttons in WSTBar95. If you leave
  98. a line in the [WSTBar] without an application path and filename, the 
  99. corresponding toolbar button will be removed from WSTBar95. Here is an
  100. example [WSTBar] section from WSTBAR.INI:

  120. Based on the above section, the toolbar for WSTBar95 would include toolbar
  121. buttons for WinSock, WWW, EMail, News, FTP, Gopher, and Finger. Since
  122. Telnet, IPhone, and IRC do not include path and filenames the toolbar
  123. buttons for these applications will be removed.

  125. Using LoadOnStart
  126. -----------------
  127. To load a specific application when WSTBar95 is started, add the application to 
  128. the LoadOnStart option in WSTBAR.INI. Allowable options for LoadOnStart are 
  129. WinSock,WWW,EMail,News,FTP,Gopher,Telnet,Finger,IPhone, and IRC. This option 
  130. is blank by default.

  132. Using you own help tips
  133. -----------------------
  134. You can customize the help tips that are displayed by WSTBar95. To specify
  135. new help tips, use the WSTBar95 Setup program to edit the settings in WSTBAR.INI.
  136. Replace the existing help tips with the desired help tips. Below is an 
  137. example of the [WSTBarHelp] section from WSTBAR.INI

  156. Loading you own icons
  157. ---------------------
  158. You can customize the toolbar icons that are displayed by WSTBar95. WSTBar95
  159. icons can be either icon files (.ICO) or bitmap files (.BMP). Bitmap files 
  160. will be automatically sized in proportion to the size of the toolbar buttons. 
  161. To load new icons, use the WSTBar95 Setup program to edit the settings in 
  162. WSTBAR.INI. Add the full path and filename of the icon for the specific
  163. toolbar button. If the file doesn't exist, the default icon for the toolbar 
  164. button will be loaded. Enclosed is a file (TRUMP.ICO) that can serve as a 
  165. template for creating new icons for WSTBar95. Below is an example of the

  185. Once you have edited the settings in WSTBAR.INI, you are ready to run WSTBar95.
  186. Double click on the WSTBar icon and the software will be loaded.

  188. WSTBar95 can be unloaded by clicking the right mouse button on any of the toolbar
  189. buttons. Any INTERNET applications that you have running when WSTBar95 is unloaded
  190. are left running.

  192. Removing the "splash" screen
  193. ----------------------------
  194. The initial "splash" screen can be removed for registered users. If you are a
  195. registered user, placing the word No in the SplashScreen keyword under the
  196. [WSTBarRegKey] will cause WSTBar95 to bypass the splash screen. If your copy of
  197. WSTBar95 is not registered the SplashScreen keyword is ignored.

  199. Online registration
  200. -------------------
  201. You can use the registration button in the WSTBar95 setup program to enter your
  202. registration code in WSTBAR.INI. This code will be supplied to you when you 
  203. register your copy of WSTBar.
