Search32 is the fastest 32-bit text retrieval tool for Windows 95 and
Windows NT operating systems. This program is for those who frequently needs
to search for words or combinations of words in a large groups of text
(ASCII/ANSI) files with a total size of tens, or even hundreds, of Megabytes
and almost instantaneously retrieve information of interest.
Unlike standard search programs, such as Windows 95's Find tool, Search32
performs its searches using a set of specially created ancillary index files.
Of course, this technique requires additional disk space (index file size is
usually 30 - 60 % of original text files total size) but allows a user to
perform a search query amazingly fast. This approach is especially useful
when it is necessary to perform numerous search queries based on the same
index.
Index creation procedure as well demonstrates an excellent run time
performance. "I was impressed with the speed it makes indexes. It can create
index file for the same time Windows 95 searches one phrase...," said
Bennet-Tec Information Systems programmer Alexander E. Nikiforov, who has
taken a look at Search32.
THESE ARE THE FEATURES REGARDING INDEXES:
* A user can work with many index files or indexes simultaneously. He can easily
create, update and remove them.
* (NEW!!!) Background monitoring indexes for their up-to-date status and notifying
a user if they need updating.
* One index can include unlimited numbers of origin text files; in fact, this is
restricted only by amount of available memory.
* When creating or updating an index, Search32 provides a possibility to browse
for original text files to be included in the index.
* Generally, if there are no vast changes in origin text files, index updating
procedure takes essentially less time than creating the index over again
* It is possible to index (and then, of course, search in) text files located
in another computer that is connected to origin one through the Microsoft
local network.
* Option to update all the indexes every time Search32 starts.
REGARDING SEARCH QUERY TYPES, SEARCH32 PROVIDES:
* CASE INSENSITIVE searches
* Possibility to search for words no longer than 32 symbols
* Searching for any particular word with presice spelling
* Searching for a group of matching words, specifying only the word's part located
at the beginning, at the middle or at the end of them. Example: bit* (bitmap),
*bit* (arbitrary), *bit (inhibit)
* Searching for a combination of words joined each other with logical operations
AND, OR and NOT. For example, it is easy to find all files with all entries of
one particular word and with no entries of another word.
REGARDING QUERY RESULTS, SEARCH32 PROVIDES:
* Almost instantaneous receiving of query results for the great majority of
queries
* Displaying as a query result the list of matching files found and the list of
matching source lines found for each matching file
* To view more than one line of source text the possibility to run the program
associated with a type of any matching file found by double-clicking its name.
* To attach any external file viewer to view files found ( for example, Windows 95
Quick View )
OTHER FEATURES:
* Accumulating for easy re-use all of previously executed queries during current
search session
* Handy search for a word from within any program. Just select the word and press
Search32's hot key combination ( Ctrl + S by default ). Search32 activates with
the word loaded and instantaneously supplies you with appropriate search results.
REQUIREMENTS:
* Windows 95, Windows NT operating systems. Search32 is not compatible with
Windows 3.x
INSTALLATION:
* If you have previous versions of Search32 1.03.xxxx and earlier, it is recommended
before installing of the current version first to uninstall the previous one in
case you want to install the new one in the same directory (use Windows 95 Control
Panel Add/Remove Programs). This is because those versions are VB-applications
(the current is Delphi-application) and have a different uninstall utility which
correctly removes all VB-components from the disk. True, this uninstall doesn't
remove "Indexes" directory, indexes themselves and Search32.cfg and so, this
should be done manually. It is recommended when installing of newer version
always to remove old indexes because an internal structure of new ones may differ
* For later previous versions or in case you want to install the current version to
a different location, the uninstall may be avoided.
REGISTRATION:
* In order to use Search32 you must register your copy with Anet Inc. The current
registration fee is $20. After registration you will be supplied with both
registration number and true password to avoid nag-screen that appears every
time you run Search32. If payment is received before next version release you
will receive the next version for free. Run Search32, press 'Registration form'
button on nag-screen and fill in the registration form.
