  1. Thank you for your interest in Search and Replace!
  2.  
  3. Create a directory and copy all the files on disk into it.  If you are running 
  4. Windows 95 or NT, create a shortcut to SR32.EXE.  Windows 3.1x users, add SR.EXE
  5. to a group in the Program Manager.
  6.  
  7. The SR.ZIP file contains the latest version of Search and Replace for Windows (sr.exe), as well 
  8. as the 32-bit version of Search and Replace (sr32.exe).  The 32-bit version runs on Windows NT 
  9. and Windows 95, and was tested on VFAT (Windows 95's file system), and NTFS (Windows NT's 
  10. optional, more secure file system).
  11.  
  12. PLEASE NOTE: While Search and Replace allows replacing in binary files (such
  13. as .DOC, .XLS etc), these proprietary format files may contain internal 
  14. counters which may get out of synch.  As a result the application that 
  15. created the file may not be able to read it.  For best results, replace 
  16. in ASCII text files (such as .HTM, .RTF, .TXT, .INI, .C, .CPP, .H etc).

  18. New features in v2.63-2.73 include:
  19. - The !^$ operators are now supported for regular expressions.  Also the []
  20.   operator now matches only one character in the list specified (to comply
  21.   more with the grep functionality).
  22. - Regular Expressions are now better documented and with more examples
  23.   in the help file.
  24. - Default Search String, File Masks and Directory are displayed for first-time
  25.   users(all you have to do is click Search).
  26. - Binary Mode dialog (... buttons next to Search and Replace strings) clearly
  27.   display the CR, LF and TAB characters.  Also the help file better explains
  28.   the use of special characters.
  29. - A new command line parameter (/Q) allows closing the application after an
  30.   operation is performed for users who want to call it repeatedly from batch
  31.   files.
  32. - The Windows 95/NT version allows View Context of binary files through a new
  33.   Freeware utility: HexView.  HexView can be downloaded from 
  34.   http://home.sprynet.com/sprynet/funduc.  It should then be installed in the
  35.   same directory as Search and Replace(or in the path or the Windows dir.).
  36. - Scripts can be created to specify multiple search/replace combinations (with
  37.   associated settings) and/or multiple paths and masks to process.  The script 
  38.   settings (masks, paths, search/replace strings) can also be overridden
  39.   from the main screen.
  40. - New command line parameters were added for Touch, Replace and sCript file.
  41.   See help file for more details.
  42. - File Finder feature and collection of file names to process is faster.
  43. - Replace feature is faster when processing multiple files.
  44. - Windows 3.1x version (SR.EXE) users can now process more than 3000 files 
  45.   (limited only by available memory).
  46. - Last non-maximized window size is now restored for the Main Windows and the View
  47.   Context window.
  48. - In the Replace Confirmation dialog hitting Enter will replace.
  49. - In the View Context window, paging through the file and then clicking on the edit
  50.   box will not cause it to shift when displaying the maximum number of lines.
  51. - Exclude masks can now be used.  For example: *.*;~*.swp;~*.exe;~*.dll will process
  52.   all but *.swp;*.exe;*.dll files.
  53. - Backup directory feature will create all directories properly.  Directories with 
  54.   exactly 2 characters (such as C:\SR) were not created correctly in the past versions
  55.   and the replace for those files were only performed if backup was not used.
  56. - Copy to clipboard error on large Search Result lists was corrected.
  57. - Command line parameters are now parsed correctly if the flags were specified last.

  59. New features in v2.6-2.62 include:
  60. - Strings displayed before and after the Search strings (for clipboard copy and 
  61.   Output File) are now configurable.
  62. - The Read-Only replace prompt now allows a Yes to All option.  Problems writing
  63.   to files opened by other applications are now logged and processing continues.
  64. - A problem with character 255 in Regular Expression ranges [] was fixed
  65. - Statistics for Search and Replace are now displayed (at the bottom).
  66. - Egrep-style regular expression support for Search and Replace (for syntax 
  67.   details see Help file).
  68.   Main differences are: 
  69.   . operators is not supported
  70.   *+? operator must precede an expression enclosed by () or [] (such as *[123] 
  71.       or +(Windows)).  Otherwise, the operator is assumed to match any/all 
  72.       characters from beginning of line or to the end of the line.
  73.   [0-9] will span all numbers (whereas egrep only matches the first one).  
  74.         To match only one, use ?[0-9].
  75.  
  76. - Some problems with read-only files on a network were resolved.
  77. - Some speed improvements were made in the 32-bit version (sr32.exe).
  78. - Error messages mention the file name.
  79. - A Setup executable is now provided for the registered version.
  80. - Command-line arguments (for running from a DOS shell) are be supported for 
  81.   some settings (see help file - Contents).
  82. - File currently processed is displayed on the main window.

  84. Features planned for future releases include:
  85.  
  86. - More options will be added to allow users to use regular expressions to find
  87.   (and replace) items "close by" (up to 4096 characters).  Currently the limit is
  88.   512 characters.
  89. - More options for script users such as show only file names with matches, allow
  90.   searching for files containing "string1 AND (string2 OR NOT(string3))" type
  91.   expressions.
  92. - Buttons for Replace/Skip in current directory will be added in the 
  93.   Replace Confirmation dialog.
  94. - Searching through .ZIP archive files.
  95. - Show only File Names with hits option.
