  11. PixFolio is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a
  12. variety of bitmapped graphics formats and maintain multiple catalogs of
  13. images.
  14.  
  15. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  16.     BMP/DIB-Windows Bitmap
  17.     CGM -   Computer Graphics Metafile
  18.     CLP -   Windows clipboard file
  19.     DRW/GRF - Micrografx draw and graph files.
  20.     EPS -   Encapsulated Postscript with imbedded TIFF preview images.
  21.     FLI/FLC - Autodesk Animator and Animator Pro (tm) files.
  22.     GIF -   CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format
  23.     ICO -   Windows Icon
  24.     ICS -   Image Cytometry ICS files.
  25.     IFF -   IFF/LBM (Amiga) used by Computer Eyes frame grabber.
  26.     IMG -   GEM/IMG (Digital Research).
  27.     JPG -   JPEG
  28.     MAC -   Macintosh MacPaint files.
  29.     PCT -   Macintosh PICT files.
  30.     PCX -   Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush

  39. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  40. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.
  41.  
  42. *** Optional features ***
  43. PixFolio supports the additional file formats if you purchase the optional,
  44. extra cost ($15) PixFolio-Plus PCD/multimedia upgrade. This option requires
  45. that you have a Photo CD capable of reading KODAK Photo CDs and in the case
  46. of Video for Windows and/or Quick Time that your machine has the necessary
  47. Windows software. The PCD/multimedia, PixFolio-Plus option is available only
  48. to registered users of PixFolio because of licensing agreements on some of
  49. the support modules.
  50.  
  51.     AVI -   Video for Windows. (Requires Video for Windows)
  52.     MID -   MIDI music files.
  53.     MOV -   Quick Time movie files. (Requires Quick Time for Windows)
  54.     PCD -   KODAK Photo CD.
  55.     WAV -   WAVE sound files.

  57. Note: MIDI and WAV files can be cataloged just like image files; a placeholder
  58. bitmap is provided for screen and catalog displays.

  60. The 32 bit version includes the above file formats at no extra cost as well as
  61. MPEG video support. 
  62.  
  63. The major feature of PixFolio is the ability to build catalogs of
  64. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  65. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  66. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a
  67. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.
  68.  
  69. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  70. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.

  109. Main Features
  110.     PixFolio utilizes Microsoft's MDI (Multiple Document Interface) so that
  111.     multiple images can be open concurrently.
  112.  
  113. File Menu:
  114.     New File - create a blank image suitable for pasting from the
  115.            clipboard.
  116.     Open File - Open a new file for viewing.
  117.     Save File - Save an image, possibly in a different format.
  118.     Move/Copy file - Move or copy a file.
  119.     Delete - Delete a file.
  120.     Print - print all or part of an image.
  121.     Select Printer - select a printer
  122.     Close

  124. Catalog Menu:
  125.     Select catalog: Create, delete, select or rename an image catalog.
  126.     Catalog. Create or update a catalog entry for a displayed image.
  127.     Browse Catalog. View catalog entries one by one; select a subset
  128.                     for viewing.
  129.     Build Catalog. Create catalog entries for groups of images.
  130.     View thumbnails of catalog entries.
  131.     Print Catalog Entries. Two formats are provided.

  156.     Single step through a GIF animation sequence.
  157.     Change the speed of a GIF animation sequence.

  159. Capture:
  160.     Capture the contents of another screen or the Windows desktop.
  161.  
  162. Other:
  163.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a marquee can be
  164.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse
  165.     button can be used to draw a stretch marquee where the selected
  166.     image rectangle is copied.
  167.  
  168. Help:
  169.     Context sensitive help is included for all menu items.
  170.  
  171. **** Other Features ****
  172.  
  173.     PixFolio version 2.0 supports OLE version 1.0 as a server only. PixFolio
  174.     will automatically register itself as an OLE server the first time that it
  175.     is executed.
  176.  
  177.     PixFolio will accept "Drag and Drop" filenames from File Manager.
  178.  
  179. ******** Equipment Requirements **********
  180.  
  181. While PixFolio will execute in a minimal Windows installation, for example, a
  182. 286 with 2 megabytes of memory, program operation will be severely inhibited
  183. by a lack of memory. On such a configuration, large bitmaps, especially 8 or
  184. 24 bit images may fail. Other applications could be adversely affected as
  185. well and fail with unexpected UAE's. Actual results will vary depending upon
  186. the amount of memory used by other applications running concurrently.
  187.  
  188. PixFolio was developed and tested on a 20-MHz 386 with 8 megabytes of memory.
  189. It is recommended that PixFolio be run on a machine with at least 4 and pre-
  190. ferrably, 6 megabytes of memory. Running in 386-Enhanced mode will also
  191. make available the benefits of virtual memory.
  192.  
  193. The display of images containing more than 16 colors requires that you have
  194. a Super VGA or better video display and a 256 color Windows device driver in
  195. order to display the full range of colors in the image. However, PixFolio
  196. incorporates dithering functions that will allow display of a 256
  197. color image using a 16 color driver such as the standard VGA driver. Such
  198. operations are slow and the results are not as good as if you have a video
  199. display capable of displaying 256 colors.
  200.  
  201. ********** Program Limitations *************
  202.  
  203. PixFolio has no limit on the number of catalogs that can be created or the
  204. size of these catalogs except as noted below and the amount of available
  205. memory. However, the following points should be noted:
  206.  
  207. 1. PixFolio 2.0 will only run under Windows 3.1 or higher. A 32 bit version 
  208.    is available for Windows NT and Windows 95. Catalog file
  209.    formats are compatible with PixFolio version 1.04 with one exception:
  210.    if the text in a catalog entry's description exceeds 1200 bytes,
  211.    the catalog cannot be read by versions of PixFolio prior to version 2.0.
  212.  
  213. 2. The size of a catalog is limited by the amount of disk space where it
  214.    resides. Catalog records are variable length and depend upon the type of 
  215.    image and how big the comments are. It is recommended that for performance reasons that catalogs be limited to
  216.    less than 5000 entries. 
  217.  
  218. 3. PixFolio may encounter difficulty with extremely large images, those in
  219.    excess of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is particularly true of color images
  220.    and even more so by 24 bit color or gray scale images. This is primarily
  221.    due to the increased memory requirements.
  222.  
  223. 4. While PixFolio and Windows supports 24 bit color and gray scale images,
  224.    the display of such images using a video driver that only displays 256
  225.    colors, can result in some lengthy delays whenever windows has to realize
  226.    the 24 bit RGB data to an 8 bit palette. It may take 15 to 20 minutes to
  227.    realize a 640 x 480 image depending upon the speed of your machine.
  228.    Dithering a 24 bit image to 256 colors can take more than an hour in some
  229.    cases. If you plan to work with 24 bit images, you may wish to invest in
  230.    a video board that supports "high color". One such board that appears to
  231.    work quite well is the ATI VGASTEREO F/X card.
  232.  
  233. 5. The support for GIF animation in PixFolio requires large amounts of free
  234.    memory. GIF animation files with a large number of frames or overlays may
  235.    unexpectedly fail if PixFolio runs out of memory.
  236.  
  237.    Autodesk FLI/FLC animation files likewise require large amounts om memory.
  238.    To provide maximum performance, the entire image is loaded into memory to
  239.    reduce delays caused by reading from disk. A lack of physical memory that
  240.    requires Windows to utilize paged virtual memory (in 386 Enhanced mode)
  241.    can result in "jumpy" animations. In addition a high performance video
  242.    board and driver is recommended to optimally display animation files
  243.    without pauses that destroy the effect.
  244.  
  245. 6. PixFolio has not been rigorously tested in a network environment. The
  246.    affect of network operations and more than one user accessing PixFolio
  247.    files concurrently cannot be predicted.
  248.  
  249. 7. Not all graphics formats are supported equally with respect to reading and
  250.    saving a file. For example, not all of the compression options are
  251.    currently supported for saving TIFF images. GIF images can only be saved
  252.    in GIF87a format. Likewise, some of the more obscure or obsolete formats
  253.    such as 4 color CGA formats for PCX cannot be written although they can be
  254.    read.
  255.  
  256.    CCITT Group 4 TIFF file comprssion formats are not supported at this time.
  257.  
  258. 8. The author has not been able to test PixFolio with printers that print in
  259.    color in Windows 3.1 except for an Epson 2550.
  260.  
  261.    One user has reported that PixFolio give very good results printing color
  262.    images on Start Micronics NX-1000 Rainbow and NX-1020 printers but you must
  263.    obtain the OEM driver from Star Micronics. Use of HP Deskjet 500C printers
  264.    requires obtaining the latest drivers.
  265.  
  266.    Printer performance when running under Windows 3.1 is much improved. It is
  267.    both faster as well as of higher quality. Changes to the printer drivers
  268.    also enable printing to color printers such as the Epson LQ-2550.
  269.  
  270. 9. The implementation of Micrografx .DRW and .GRF files is not rigorous. Some
  271.    features of these files are not supported. Unless you have Adobe Type
  272.    Manager or scalable typefaces, the rendition of fonts used in these files
  273.    may not be optimal when Windows matches fonts.
  274.  
  275. 10. If you have the KODAK Photo CD optional package, you may not be able to
  276.    render images at the highest resolution (16BASE) unless you have at least
  277.    8 megs of ram and a 34 meg swap file. These are limitations of the KODAK
  278.    PCD software, not PixFolio.
  279.  
  280. 11. Other program limitations, if any, can be determined by accessing the
  281.    online context-sensitive help.
  282.  
  283. Known Problems:
  284. 1. The setup routine for the 32 bit version fails on some machines with an 
  285.    error message: "While registering OLE servers,  Setup had a problem with REG.DAT, SHELL.DLL 
  286.    or disk space." The problem appears to be a problem in the Microsoft Setup Toolkit and 
  287.    probably won't be resolved until I get a chance to re-write the setup program using a different 
  288.    setup tool kit. In the meantime, there are a few things that may help:
  289.     *  If the above error  occurs before any files are copied to your hard drive, you may have 
  290.        to uninstall any previous copy of PixFolio first. See the instructions on uninstalling 
  291.        PixFolio below.
  292.     *  If the above error occurs after copying the files to your hard drive, the installation 
  293.            is almost complete and only requires a few manual steps to complete the installation. 
  294.     *  Create an icon on the desktop or in a program group for PixFol32.exe in the directory that 
  295.            you installed the PixFolio Files.
  296. 2. The 32 bit setup program is not aware of long file names. Rather than trying to specify a 
  297.    long path name for an install location such as "C:\Program Files\PixFolio", use instead the 8.3 
  298.    equivalent: "C:\Progra~1\Pixfolio".
  299.  
  300.  Uninstalling PixFolio
  301.  
  302.  Uninstalling the 16 bit version of PixFolio involves 3 steps:
  303.     1. Delete the directory that PixFolio is installed in. 
  304.     2. Delete the PixFolio.ini file in the Windows directory.
  305.     3. Delete the key values in  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT from the registry. "Pixfolio", ".CAT" and 
  306.        ".CIX".
  307.  If PixFolioÆs setup program completed normally, it should be possible to uninstall the 
  308.  32 bit version  using the built-in uninstall function in the Add/remove programs applet of 
  309.  Control Panel. To manually uninstall the 32 bit version of PixFolio:
  310.     1. Delete the entire Pixfolio installation directory where Pixfol32.exe and all the 
  311.        Pixxxx.dll files are located.
  312.     2. Delete PixFol32.hlp from the \windows\help directory
  313.     3. Delete PixFolio.inf from the \windows\inf directory. (note this is a hidden directory).
  314.     4. Delete the following key trees from the system registry:
  315.         a) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ACKSoftware\Pixfolio
  316.         b) Delete the following key values in  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT from the registry. 
  317.            "Pixfolio", ".CAT" and ".CIX".
  318.  
  319.  
  320.  
  321. ****** Installation and Getting Started*******
  322.  
  323. If your copy of PixFolio was received on a distribution diskette, the
  324. installation should be done from within windows by running "SETUP" from drive
  325. A: or B: (whichever is appropriate). This is important as the files on a
  326. distribution diskette are compressed. Otherwise, the following installation
  327. procedure should be followed:
  328.  
  329. It is suggested that the files which constitute PixFolio be placed in their
  330. own subdirectory on your hard disk. These files listed in the file PixPack.lst.
  331.  
  332. Once the above files have been located in the subdirectory of your choice,
  333. start Windows and then use the Program Manager "Add" command to add PixFolio
  334. to the desired program group.
  335.  
  336. When PixFolio runs for the first time, it will establish a section in
  337. a PixFolio.INI file with program variables. These default options should enable
  338. you to start using PixFolio immediately. Once PixFolio is running you may
  339. access the online Help command for specific instructions and explanation of
  340. PixFolio menu commands.
  341.  
  342. ****** Windows 95 Installation Procedures **********
  343.  
  344. A Windows 95 information file, Pixfolio.inf is provided to install
  345. PixFolio using the built-in install/uninstall feature of Windows 95. To do
  346. this, locate the directory containing the unzipped Pixfolio files. Click on
  347. the PixFolio.Inf file in Explorer (the icon is of a notepad with a gear) with
  348. the right mouse button and select "Install". PixFolio will then be installed
  349. on the C:drive and an icon will be created. 
  350.  
  351. A quick review of PixFolio features and operating procedures can be gained by
  352. reviewing the user guide.
