  8.     Welcome to QuikCal!
  9.  
  10.     Thank you for trying QuikCal. QuikCal is a simple reminder
  11.     program designed to be easy to use and to configure. QuikCal
  12.     runs under all current 32 bit versions of Microsoft Windows,
  13.     including Windows 95, Windows NT, and Windows/Windows for
  14.     Workgroups running the win32s extension. For more information,
  15.     see the section on platform specific issues below.

  17.     QuikCal is shareware. This means that after a reasonable trial
  18.     period (30 days), you must register in order to continue using
  19.     QuikCal. For more information, see the section on registering
  20.     below.

  23. PLATFORM SPECIFIC ISSUES
  24. ========================

  26.     QuikCal is a 32-bit program.  It is designed to be compatible
  27.     with all current 32-bit versions of the Microsoft Windows
  28.     operating system.  Windows 95 and Windows NT should run QuikCal
  29.     as-is, with no additional modifications.  To run QuikCal under
  30.     Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups, you must have installed
  31.     Microsoft's 32-bit extension, win32s, version 1.3 or higher,
  32.     which is available for download at no charge from Microsoft
  33.     (refer to the section on obtaining win32s below).

  35.     QuikCal Help
  36.     ------------
  37.     QuikCal's help file is designed for winhelp 4.0 or greater.
  38.     Winhelp 4.0 is supplied with Windows 95, Windows NT 3.51, and
  39.     win32s 1.3. Older versions of winhelp will not be able to read
  40.     the QuikCal help file, although QuikCal itself should function
  41.     normally in other respects (and is generally self explanatory).

  45.     QuikCal has been tested under the following versions of operating

  54.     Windows 95 Features
  55.     -------------------
  56.     QuikCal is designed to take advantage of the new features of
  57.     Windows 95.  Specifically, QuikCal can be configured to remain
  58.     as a small icon on the system tray (on the right side of the
  59.     taskbar).

  61.     QuikCal also makes use of the new WinHelp 4.0 help system. This
  62.     provides a table of contents and an index for the help file, in
  63.     addition to context sensitive help by way of the "what's this"
  64.     button in the title bar of dialog boxes, or by right-clicking on
  65.     a control.

  67.     The 3D Look
  68.     -----------
  69.     QuikCal makes use of the 32-bit 3D controls library, CTL3D32.DLL,
  70.     if available.  This file is supplied with QuikCal, and should be
  71.     moved to the Windows system directory.  If not found, QuikCal will
  72.     run, but will not have the 3-dimensional, sculpted look.

  74.     Note for Windows 95 users:  this file is not used or needed when
  75.     running under Windows 95.  Windows 95 internally provides the
  76.     functionality of the 3D control libraries.

  79.     INSTALLATION
  80.     ============

  82.     QuikCal can be copied to the directory of your choice.  QuikCal
  83.     does not trash up your Windows directories with a bunch of DLL's,
  84.     with one optional exception. Even the INI file is kept in the
  85.     same directory as the program.  The following files should be
  86.     present in the installation set:

  88.     quikcal.exe    The executable file. Copy to the directory of
  89.             your choice.
  90.  
  91.     quikcal.dll    The DLL. Copy to the same directory.
  92.  
  93.     quikcal.hlp    The help file. Copy to the same directory.
  94.  
  95.     quikcal.cnt    The help contents file. Copy to the same directory.

  97.     readme.txt      This file. Not used by the program itself.

  99.     ctl3d32.dll    If you are using Windows 95, delete this file.  If
  100.             you don't want the nice 3D look, delete this file
  101.             (and make sure you don't already have one; however,
  102.             other programs may be using this file). Otherwise,
  103.             move this file to the windows system directory. Be
  104.             sure not to leave an additional copy in the QuikCal
  105.             directory; it'll complain.

  107.     wood.bmp    A bitmap that can optionally be used to paint the
  108.             main window background. This is a 256 color bitmap,
  109.             and will only look good if your graphics adapter is
  110.             configured to display 256 or more colors.

  112.     *.wav            Sound files that may optionally be assigned to
  113.             various events.
  114.  
  115.     The "normal" use for QuikCal is to create an icon for it in your
  116.     Startup folder (or group, if you're living in the past). This way,
  117.     you will be greeted with QuikCal's friendly calendar each time you
  118.     start Windows (along with the list of lousy appointments you'd
  119.     rather forget, but can't afford to). However, I wouldn't presume
  120.     to tell you how to set up your own computer.

  123. REGISTERING QUIKCAL
  124. ===================

  126.     QuikCal is fully functional shareware.  This means that the
  127.     version you're looking at is the complete version, with no
  128.     features missing or disabled.  This also means that after a
  129.     reasonable trial period (up to 30 days), you must register to
  130.     continue using QuikCal, or suffer the horrible consequences.
  131.     Well, let's face it, there aren't really any consequences (unless
  132.     you have a conscience), but please register anyway. I'm sure
  133.     you've heard all the reasons for supporting shareware before, so
  134.     I won't bother you with them here.

  176.     You are free to distribute QuikCal in its original form, as long
  177.     as all files are included unmodified. You may not charge any fee
  178.     for distributing QuikCal, nor may QuikCal be included in any
  179.     commercial product without express permission of the author.

  181.     Unregistered Users

  183.     You are granted the right to use QuikCal for a trial period of
  184.     up to 30 days.  At the end of this period of time, you must
  185.     either register QuikCal, or remove the QuikCal program files
  186.     from your computer.

  190.     Each license grants the license-holder the right to install and
  191.     use QuikCal on a single computer, or on multiple computers as long
  192.     as there is no possibility that more than one copy will be used
  193.     simultaneously. A site license grants the license-holder the right
  194.     to install and use QuikCal on the number of computers specified in
  195.     the license agreement. A license may be transferred as long as the
  196.     original license holder removes QuikCal and all of its related
  197.     files from his computer, and otherwise ceases to use QuikCal on
  198.     that computer. If QuikCal is to be installed on a network, a
  199.     network site license must be obtained based on the number of
  200.     computers which simultaneously have access to QuikCal.

  229. ==========

  239.     Windows/Windows for Workgroups
  240.     ------------------------------
  241.     When the minimize button is pressed, it is displayed slightly
  242.     offset from its normal position. This problem corrects itself
  243.     when the window is restored.
  244.  
  245.     When the system menu button is pressed, the menu and button
  246.     highlight are displayed slightly offset from their normal position.
  247.     This problem corrects itself when the menu is dismissed.

  249.     (Author's note: These two problems are known bugs in Windows/Windows
  250.     for Workgroups. The author would welcome any suggestions for
  251.     bypassing these problems, other than "don't put a modal frame on
  252.     a dialog box").

  254.     In the settings dialog box, when the alternate layout has been
  255.     selected, box setting the number of lines to display in the event
  256.     list is (and should be) disabled. However, instead of displaying
  257.     grayed text, the text associated with this box is blanked out. As
  258.     near as I can tell, this is a bug with win32s, as it does not
  259.     happen under Windows 95 or Windows NT. This bug is purely cosmetic
  260.     and has no affect on the normal function of QuikCal.
