1. Description
==============
Intended for use in the small to medium LAN environment, MIB Master allows you
to view and modify your SNMP agents using any World Wide Web browser such as
Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Explorer. This gives a simple access that does
not have lots of features that you will never use and a price tag to match.
MIB Master fully supports SNMP version 1, including:
* Get and Set Requests,
* Tables entries,
* All standard variable types,
* Agregates multiple Gets to minimise network traffic,
* Many standard RFC MIB files provided,
* Customisable HTML templates,
* Full trap support,
* Host discovery ,
* Security features including admin and user passwords,
* ASN to HTML conversion script for AWK,
* Automatic vendor detection using sysObjectId
All Equivalence products, including MIB Master, can be downloaded free of
charge from our Web site, whose address is given below. This site contains
information on configuring and installing MIB Master, as well as the rest of
our products.
For a up to 7 Get Requests, MIB Master can be used without registration. For
more than 7 Get Requests and Set Request capability, a special registration
key can be purchased from Equivalence. The price for registration key is US$50.
MIB Master currently runs on the following operating systems:
- Windows/NT version 3.5, 3.51, and 4.0
- Windows 95
- Linux
- SunOS
For more information, or to get the latest version, check out our Web site at:

2. New in Version 1.2
=====================
For those who are familiar with MibMaster version 1.0, here is a summary of
the new features in version 1.1:
. We have included lots more MIB files. They are available in a separate
archive from our Web site. See
http://www.ozemail.com.au/~equival/mibmaster/faq.html for more info
. A problem with the Host Discover screen which caused it to display
text in a font too large for the screen has been fixed.
. A problem with the Host Discover screen displaying large negative
ping times has been fixed.
. A problem with Discover MIB page which caused it to fail has been fixed.
. A problem which caused long MIB displays to be occasionally truncated
has been fixed.
. The AWK script "mib_to_html" has been replaced with an improved script
called "mib2html.awk". This is a fully fledged ASN parser and was used for
all of the MIB files provided with MibMaster. See the FAQ for more
information on where to get AWK.
. The View MIBs page will display the name of the MIB vendor as identified
by the sysObjectId entry. The enterprise number in this object will be
used to extract the name of the vendor as contained in the text file
"enterprise-numbers". If a subdirectory with the enterprise number exists
in the "mibs/vendors" directory, then this string will be a hyperlink to
a HTML target in the file "mibs/vendors.html". See the existing file
for an example of how to do this.

3. Installation Procedure
=========================
Until we get a proper install program going, you should follow the step
outlined here. At present we are assuming a reasonable knowledge of the target
operating system (Windows/NT or Linux) and its concepts and management. If you
are a rank beginner then this is a good time to start learning!
3.1 Prerequisites:
------------------
It is assumed that the following have already been installed:
* TCP/IP.
* Remote Access Service (optional).
* A web browser, e.g. Netscape Navigator.
3.2 Windows/NT & Windows 95 Procedure
-------------------------------------
BEFORE STARTING: Make sure you have an UnZip program which correctly
handles long filenames. Using a program which does not
do long filenames correctly will cause all of the help files
and MIB files to be inaccessible!
1. If this is the first time you have installed a copy of MIB Master, then
go to step 4. If you have previously installed a version of MIB Master,
continue on to step 2.
2. Open a command shell and use the CD command to change to the directory
in which the previous version of MIB Master is installed. Enter the
following commands:
MIBMaster STOP
MIBMaster REMOVE
A note for experts: as a rule it is not necessary to remove the service
as stopping it is sufficient to replace the executable file. Of course
it then does not need to be installed later either. This is put in here
as a fail safe only.
3. You may then delete all of the files in the current directory or copy
them to another directory as a backup. All configuration information
is stored elsewhere, so the new version will automatically use the
old settings.
4. Use your favorite UnZIP program to unpack the .ZIP file you have
received. You should do this in the directory in which you want to
install MIB Master. We recommend using the directory:
C:\WIN32APP\MIBMASTR
If you are installing MIB Master into the same directory as a previous
version, make sure you delete all of the old files before continuing.
MAKE SURE THE UNZIP PROCESS CREATES THE DIRECTORIES IN THE ZIP FILE!
IF YOU DO NOT CREATE TYHESE DIRECTORIES, YOUR MIB FILES WILL NOT WORK!
5. The directory should contain a file named MIBMaster.EXE, two .GIF files,
and a set of .HTML files. If you have .HTM files instead of .HTML,
then your UnZIP programs doesn't understand long filenames. To rename
these files to the correct extension, enter the following command from
an command shell:
REN *.HTM *.HTML
6. From a command shell, execute the command:
MIBMaster INSTALL
This will install the MIB Master service into the system registry.
7. From a command shell, execute the command:
MIBMaster START
This will start the MIB Master service automatically. Alternatively, you
may use the Services applet in the Control Panel to start the MIB Master
service manually. This applet can also be used to make MIB Master
automatically start on reboot.
8. Start your Web browser and enter the URL:
http://localhost:1090
This should bring up the MIB Master Home Page with the logo and
hyperlinks to online help and configuration pages.
9. The first time you attempt to access any MIB Master configuration page,
you will be asked for a username and password to authorise access.
MIB Master is delivered with two username/password pairs which can
be configured from the Global Parameters configuration page. The
default entries for administrator access are username "admin" and
password "secret". The default values for user access are "user" and
"password". We recommend you change these settings to other values to
preserve the security of your system.
10. Follow the steps in the "Getting Started" section of the online help.
This section is also available from a hyperlink on the MIB Master Home
page.
11. Once you are connected to the 'Web, be sure to check out the release
notes for late breaking information on your version of MIB Master. There
is a hyperlink to this document near the bottom of the MIB Master Home
Page.
12. Most importantly - PLEASE REGISTER YOUR COPY OF MIB Master! Not only will
it allow you to use MIB Master with more 7 Get Requests, but the money will
help us improve the product even further. We will keep you informed
of new versions of MIB Master via email, and please check our 'Web
Home Page at "http://www.ozemail.com.au/~equival" for information on
other Equivalence products.
3.3 Linux Procedure
-------------------
1. If this is the first time you have installed a copy of MIB Master, then
go to step 4. If you have previously installed a version of MIB Master,
continue on to step 2.
2. You must stop the running version of MIB Master. To do this use the
following:
ps -aux | grep mibmaster
kill -9 <pid>
Where <pid> is the process ID displayed by the ps command.
3. You may then delete all of the files in the directory in which the
previous version of MIB Master is installed or copy them to another
directory as a backup. All configuration information is stored
in the directory $(HOME)/.pwlib_config, where $(HOME) is the home
directory of the user who installed and registered MIB Master. Be
carefull not to modify or delete this information or you will lose
your registration status.
4. If MIB master is going to be used by one person only, then we
recommend using an installation in that user's home directory. For
example, the following commands can be used to install MIB Master
in the directory ~/mibmaster:
cd ~
mkdir mibmaster
cd mibmaster
gunzip -c mibmaster-v1.0beta1-linux-486.tgz | tar xf -
If MIB master is going to be used by more than person, we recommend
creating a userid specifically for MIB Master, and then installing
the program in /usr/local/mibmaster as shown above.
As MIB Master stores configuration and registration information in the
home directory of the user which invokes the executable, the filesystem
containing this directory must be writable.
MIB Master will run correctly setuid, so a suitable configured
executable may be invoked from the rc.local at startup file without
littering the root directory with configuration files.
5. From a command shell, execute the command:
mibmaster -x &
To have MIB Master automatically start on reboot, include the above
line in your /etc/rc.local file.
6. Proceed from step 8 of the Windows/NT installation isntructions.
