  16. So, you always wanted a Mac which is why you started drooling 
  17. when you saw Windoz 95 for the first time.  Well, I have news for you, 
  18. Windoz 95 can look even more like a Mac.  I have created the Macintosh
  19. Theme for Windoz 95.  This can only be used if you have Micro$oft Plus
  20. installed on your system.
  21.  
  22. Theme features include:
  23. -Macintosh busy clock, pointer, trash icons, hard & floppy icons.
  24. -All Mac sounds, including ROM startup (hummmm...) sound.
  25. -Mac desktop background.
  26. -Mac fonts.
  27. -Mac startup and shutdown screens.
  28.  
  29. Here are the steps you need to take to get this theme off right.  
  30. I will assume win95 is installed under "c:\windows".  
  31. You may have to adjust the instructions if this is not your settings.
  32. I'm separating the theme installation in 2 parts.  The first part is just
  33. to make your system look pretty much like a Mac.  The 2nd part takes your
  34. computer to "the next level" and is kinda like the icing on the cake.  The
  35. 2nd part is just a bit more time consuming.
  36.  
  37. -Part 1:  General theme
  38. 1.  Since you are reading this you must have already unzipped this
  39.  "mactheme" zip file.  Hopefully you unzipped all the files into an
  40. empty directory.  If not, unzip the "mactheme" zip file in an empty directory.  
  41. Name it "Mac".  
  42.  
  43. 2.  Put this directory in the "Themes" folder which should be under the 
  44. directory "Plus!" (ie. C:\program files\Plus!\Themes\).
  45.  
  46. 3.  Now take the files Geneva & Chicago and put them in the directory 
  47. c:\windows\fonts
  48.  
  49. 4.  Go into the control panel and go in desktop themes.
  50. Then click on the theme menu and go all the way down to other.  Pick it.
  51. Now browse to the theme "Mac95" which should be in the "Mac" folder.  Under
  52. settings have all of them checked (no need to check screensaver though, did
  53. not include one with this theme).  Now hit "OK" and your Mac is ready!

  56. -Part 2 (Finish HIM!):  These are additions that aren't technically part of
  57. the theme but help to make your PC look like a Mac.

  59. 5.  Next rename the file c:\logo.sys to c:\winlogo.sys
  60. rename c:\windows\logow.sys to c:\windows\winlogow.sys
  61. rename c:\windows\logos.sys to c:\windows\winlogos.sys
  62. (these are windoz default startup screens)
  63. NOTE:  Some windoz95 systems are setup without a c:\logo.sys file which means
  64. you don't have to rename it.  Just put my logo.sys file in c:\ and windoz will
  65. recognize it's there and use it as the default startup screen.  Simply remove
  66. it to get the old startup screen back.
  67.  
  68. 6.  Now look in the "Mac" directory and move the file "logo.sys" to 
  69. the "c:\" directory.  Now move the files logos.sys & logow.sys 
  70. to the "c:\windows" directory.
  71. (these are new mac startup screens)
  72.  
  73. 7.  Go in "My computer" and take the "c:\" drive and bring it to the desktop
  74.  to create a shortcut.  Do the same for the floppy drive "a:\".   
  75. Go to the c:\ drive shortcut you put on your desktop and right click the mouse 
  76. and choose properties.  Then click the tab "shortcut", then click "change icon" 
  77. and browse into the Mac directory.  Then choose the icon "Macintosh HD".  
  78. Follow the same instructions for the Floppy icon except choose the icon 
  79. "Floppy Drive".  Now you can rename those shortcuts to "MacintoshHD" (one word)
  80. and "Floppy Drive"

  82. 8.  You can change the words "Recycle Bin" to "Trash" by two methods.
  83. I.  You can use the latest version of Micro$ofts TweakUI (power toy) which is
  84. available at their web site.  In that program their is a part called "Desktop".
  85. Just click on the words "Recycle Bin" and then rename it.  By the way, they have
  86. an option under "Explorer" for light arrows for shortcuts.  IMHO they look A LOT
  87. BETTER.  Especially for mac icons on your desktop.

  89. II.  Using RegEdit (c:\windows\regedit) Simply start RegEdit and go to "Edit".
  90. Do "Find" and use "Recycle Bin".  Right click the icon and choose modify.
  91. Rename it "Trash".  Now hit F3 to find other entries and edit them also.
  92. There should be about 2 of "Recycle Bin".

  94. 8.  Go to Control Panel, display, Plus!, and choose the "My Computer" icon.  Click
  95. "change icon" then browse to the mac directory and choose the icon "My Mac".  Click
  96. the button "OK".  Now click on the words "My Computer" and rename it to "System Folder".

  98. 9.  Now arrange your desktop like a Mac (This is the easy part!):

  116. We're almost finished, don't give up yet!

  118. 10.  Make a Control Panel in your start menu (like a Mac).  Go into Start, Settings,
  119. Taskbar.  Hit the tab "Start Menu items", then click "Advanced".  Now right click the
  120. mouse and make a new folder and call it "Control Panel".  Double click in it, it should
  121. be empty.  Now leave that area for now & go in "My Computer", then "Control Panel".
  122. Select all of the icons or just the ones you use most frequently and then move them to
  123. the new folder "Control Panel".  Now in the start menu you should have a new Control
  124. Panel that is much faster than the original!

  126. 11.  This is kinda annoying so I don't use it but you have the option to hide
  127. the taskbar.  What it does is sink to the bottom of the screen when your not
  128. using it then you just move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and the bar
  129. comes up.  You can find this feature in "Start", Settings, Taskbar, autohide.

  131. -Additional Startup Screens!
  132. The new startup screens are called "smile.sys" & "welcome.sys".  Backup your logo.sys
  133. file in your c:\ directory then move one of these files to "c:\".  Now rename the one
  134. you moved to logo.sys.  Restart your computer to see a new startup screen!

  136. Well, I hope you like the theme, I worked hard on it.  
  137. Consider this a tribute to a dying OS which could and should have 
  138. been the home OS standard.  Keep you fingers crossed for Copeland :)  Take care.

  147. By the way, he has made a great utility that is basically the Mac taskbar that's called 
  148. WinMac. It's great...instead of having just my background "File Edit View Label Special",
  149. you can actually have A WORKING VERSION OF IT.  You can get it at:

  153. -Reno Filla (Reno.Filla@Student.FH-Magdeburg.DE):  A cool new feature in Win95 is animated
  154. startup screens.  I completely in dark on how to make them until Reno came along to help
  155. me.  Moreover he clued me in on how to make higher rez startup screens.

  157. Notes:
  158.  
  159. 1.  Startup and shutdown screens are still somewhat pixelated & distorted because of the
  160. win95 resizing effect.  Unfortunately, this is unavoidable.
  161.  
  162. 2.  I only have access to a American version of the MacOS and Win95 operating system
  163. therefore I cannot support foreign OS's.  Specifically, the U.S. fonts may not work on
  164. foreign systems...sorry I wish I could do something about this.

  166. 3.  Because the desktop background has to be bitmap file it is basically a graphic/video
  167. memory hog.  So if things are a bit to slow with this background you can choose an 
  168. alternative background that hardly uses any memory but doesn't have the
  169. "File Edit View Label Special" at the top.  To use it just go to control panel, display,
  170. background, browse under wallpaper to the mactile.bmp file (in Mac directory) and choose
  171. "tile".

  173. 4.  Some characters like 1/2 did not translate from Mac to PC font-wise so you may
  174. occasionally see funny symbols for some characters.
