  1. Welcome to the Windows95.com CD-ROM !
  2.  
  3. These CD's are mastered in "Joliet" format which supports long mixed
  4. case filenames under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.  For DOS systems
  5. and pre-4.0 NT systems the filenames will appear all uppercase, DOS
  6. will see them truncated to 8.3 format, NT 3.51 will see long names.

  8. Please see the file "notes.bbs" for notes about the use of these CD's
  9. with BBS software.

  11. If you do not already have a Web browser installed, MSIE 3.0 is
  12. provided in the directory "browsers" on disc2 as msie30m.exe
  13.

  15. We also recommend installing WINZIP to facilitate accessing the
  16. "zip" and "tar" files on the CD.  If you do not have this installed
  17. on your system already, refer to the instructions in the readme file.

  19. The files on this disc are presented in a manner to resemble the
  20. layout and functionality of the Windows95.com 32-bit Shareware
  21. Collection Web site at http://www.windows95.com.

  23. The HTML files used to present the information must be viewed with
  24. Web browser software. You do not need an Internet connection to view
  25. them. Your Web browser can read the files directly from the CD.
  26.  
  27. You can use any Web browser software you choose to access these files.
  28. However, the HTML files on this CD are optimized for use with
  29. Microsoft's Internet Explorer Web browser. We have included a copy
  30. of Internet Explorer on this CD.

  32. Once your Web browser software is installed (or if you already have Web
  33. browser software installed), simply OPEN the file INDEX.HTML in the root
  34. directory of the CD. This will allow you to access all the shareware in
  35. the collection.

  37. ACCESSING THE FILES ON THIS CD
  38. ==============================

  40. Once you have installed the Microsoft Internet Explorer and WinZip,
  41. you can access the Windows95.com 32-bit Shareware Collection CD-ROM.

  43. To access the HTML files on the CD:
  44. 1. Click the Start menu
  45. 2. Click Run
  46. 3. Type d:\index.html
  47. (This assumes that your CD-ROM drive is drive D:. If your CD-ROM drive
  48. uses a different drive letter, type that letter instead.)
  49.  
  50. The main HTML file for the Windows95.com 32-bit Shareware Collection
  51. will appear in your Web browser's window. Use your mouse to access the
  52. desired sections of the CD.
  53.  
  54. To "download" a program from the CD, click on the program's icon. Due
  55. to copyright restrictions, some programs are not stored on this CD. In
  56. these cases, the program's icon will link you to the home Internet site
  57. of the program and attempt to download. If an Internet connection is not
  58. established, Windows 95 will attempt to connect to the Internet and then
  59. download the file.

  61. If the file you selected is stored in ZIP format, Internet Explorer will
  62. automatically send the file to WinZip, where you can extract its contents
  63. to the directory of your choice (view the WinZip Help file for more
  64. information on managing ZIP files).

  66. If the file you selected is stored in self-extracting EXE format, Internet
  67. Explorer will provide you the option to Open, Save As..., or Cancel. Selecting
  68. Open will extract the contents of the self-extracting EXE file onto your
  69. Windows 95 desktop. Selecting Save As... will let you transfer the file from
  70. the CD to a directory of your choice, where you can then double-click the EXE
  71. file to extract it. Selecting Save As... is the recommended choice. You should
  72. create a temporary directory on your hard drive where you can save self-
  73. extracting EXE files and extract them. Once you've finished running the setup
  74. program associated with the file, you can delete the contents of the temporary
  75. directory.

  77. You can also access the program files directly, without the need for Internet
  78. Explorer. The ZIP and EXE files that correspond to each shareware section of
  79. the Windows95.com 32-bit Shareware Collection are stored in each section's
  80. folder on the CD.
