Startup Screen Changer
Version 1.2
Tired of starting Win95 with those Bill Gates clouds? Want some variety
in your startup screens? This program allows you to put a whole bunch of
startup screens (acquired separately -- see below) in one place, and have
one chosen at random to start each time.
This program is being distributed as FreeWare
You don't have to pay anything to use this software. However, I'd love
to hear from anyone who is using it at elincoln@csalum.idbsu.edu!
Also, let me know at that address if you have any problems or suggestions.
Response is not guaranteed, but I'll try.
My software is hidden at http://csalum.idbsu.edu/~elincoln/software/
Any updates will be posted there.
IF ANYTHING IN THIS DOCUMENT LEAVES YOU FEELING LOST,
PLEASE TALK TO A "TECHIE TYPE" BEFORE USING THIS!
The flip side of the low price is that it is offered AS IS. I
accept no responsibility for anything that goes wrong.
This program requires the VB4 runtime modules (vb40032.dll). Try
ftp://ftp.sausage.com/pub/hd32supp.exe if you don't have them...
This program automatically replaces the logo.sys file in your boot directory
(usually c:\logo.sys) with a randomly selected bitmap. By default, the
bitmap is selected from the current directory, but if you pass in a directory
name as a command-line parameter, it will change to the directory you indicate
and select a bitmap from that directory. The simplest way to use this is to
put startchg.exe and your bitmaps in a special directory, and put a shortcut
to startchg.exe in your startup group.
If you give a specific file name as a command-line parameter, instead of a
directory name, THAT FILE will be used, instead of a randomly selected one.
Also, if you include /w in the command-line parameter, the "Please wait while
your computer shuts down" screen will be replaced instead, and if you include
/s in the command-line parameter, the "It's now safe to turn off your computer."
screen will be replaced. These files are located in your Windows directory, and
are named logow.sys and logos.sys respectively.
Note that only 320x400, 256-color bitmaps will work. Any other bitmaps
WILL RESULT IN NO STARTUP LOGO BEING DISPLAYED!!!! Also, they must have
the .bmp extension or they will not be used as startup screens. Many startup
screens out there come with a .sys extension. Rename them if you want them
to be used. I don't try to save the existing startup logo, so you might
want to copy it (c:\logo.sys) to another name before you use this (in case
you ever want those clouds back!)
There are a whole bunch of valid startup screens available on the internet.
Try the following locations to find some (Addresses not under my control
and subject to change...)
