  20. a detailed list of the new virus definitions and a summary of current
  21. virus activity around the world.

  25. ** Adding Program File Extensions to Detect/Repair Excel Viruses   **
  26. **********************************************************************
  27. In order for NAV (all versions and platforms) to detect and repair the 
  28. XM.Laroux virus, you must add ".XL?" to the program files extension 
  29. list. Without this addition, NAV will ignore all Excel spreadsheets and 
  30. not report infections.

  52. **  Microsoft Word Macro Viruses                                    **

  54. Macro viruses use the WordBasic macro language to infect and, in some
  55. cases, implant binary viruses into host programs.  Currently, there
  56. are several known macro viruses: Concept is the most widespread.
  57.  
  58. Macro viruses reside within Microsoft Word document and template
  59. files.  Notably, macro viruses are platform-independent. They can
  60. infect documents and templates on the DOS, Windows, Window 95,
  61. Windows NT, and Mac operating systems.
  62.  
  63. All current versions of Norton AntiVirus detect and eliminate the
  64. macro viruses. 
  65.  
  66. If your installed version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV.EXE or
  67. NAVW.EXE) is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, or your installed
  68. version of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 (NAVW32.EXE) is dated
  69. earlier than December 1, 1995, you need to upgrade. The Norton
  70. AntiVirus upgrade installs the NAV Macro Engine automatically, which
  71. detects and eliminates macro viruses.

  73. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus 3.0 program:
  74.  
  75.   * Download the file called UPDATEME.EXE
  76.   * Place the file in an empty directory and execute the file
  77.     to extract.

  79. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 program:

  81.   * Download the file called NAV95PCH.EXE
  82.   * Place the file in an empty folder and execute the file
  83.     to extract.

  89. UPDATEME.EXE and NAV95PCH.EXE are located where the monthly virus
  90. definitions files update are normally found. It is available for
  91. download from the Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites,
  92. CompuServe, America Online, or Microsoft Network. You can also call
  93. Customer Service at (800) 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  96. **  Disappearing Hard Drives                                        **
  97. **********************************************************************
  98. Several viruses, such as Frankenstein and Stoned.Empire.Monkey, cause
  99. your hard disk to "disappear" when booting from a clean floppy disk.
  100. This occurs because the virus either encrypts or relocates the hard
  101. disk partition table (a vital part of the disk's system area). 
  102.  
  103. All "appears" well when you boot from your hard disk because the
  104. virus actives in memory and tells DOS where the partition table is
  105. relocated, or acts as the partition table itself. If you boot clean,
  106. DOS can't find the partition table and the virus isn't around to give
  107. directions. You may receive an "Invalid drive specification" or
  108. similar error when trying to access the hard disk.
  109.  
  110. When you boot clean so NAV can repair such an infection, the hard
  111. disk will not appear in the drive list. Don't worry! NAV, with the
  112. default options enabled, will bypass DOS and look directly at the
  113. hard disk to check the system area for infection, no matter what you
  114. scan. For example, scanning a floppy disk will scan memory, the
  115. floppy disk, and the system area of the hard disk. If such an
  116. infection is discovered, you are alerted appropriately.

  118. NOTE: IDE hard drives larger than 1024 cylinders often require the
  119. use of additional driver or overlay files. If you have such a drive,
  120. you may need to include these additional files on your Norton
  121. AntiVirus Rescue Disk to ensure recovery from virus emergencies. Make
  122. sure that any special driver or overlay files for your hard drive,
  123. which are part of your normal system configuration, are included on
  124. your rescue disk.
