  3. The following document details the virus definitions update procedures for:

  5. * Norton AntiVirus 3.0
  6. * Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  7. * Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  8. * Norton AntiVirus for NetWare 2.0
  9. * Norton AntiVirus Scanner for Windows NT

  12. TIP: Be sure to read the SEP96.TXT for important information about new
  13. viruses. The new macro virus that infects Microsoft Excel files requires
  14. you to add .xl? to the Program File Extensions List. For instructions,
  15. see SEP96.TXT.

  18. Intelligent Updater
  19. ===================
  20.  
  21. As part of our continuing commitment to fight the spread of computer
  22. viruses, Symantec has developed a new program called Intelligent Updater
  23. to simplify virus definitions files updates. Intelligent Updater locates
  24. Norton AntiVirus on your computer and installs new virus definitions
  25. files automatically. All you have to do is run the program then scan
  26. your disk with Norton AntiVirus. Later sections of this document give
  27. step-by-step instructions for each Norton AntiVirus version.
  28.  
  29. The Intelligent Updater program name, which changes from month to month, 
  30. uses the following form: 
  31.  
  32.  mmNAVyy.EXE, where mm is the month and yy is the year.
  33.  
  34. For example, 09NAV96.EXE is the virus definitions files update for 
  35. September, 1996.

  38. Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  39. ===============================

  41. ============================================================================
  42. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95
  43. (NAVW32.EXE) is dated earlier than December 1, 1995, you need to upgrade
  44. your software before updating the virus definitions files. Using older
  45. versions of Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 will cause false detections
  46. when the new virus definitions are installed. The Norton AntiVirus for
  47. Windows 95 upgrade program updates Norton AntiVirus to detect and
  48. eliminate a new class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses
  49. infect Microsoft Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel
  50. files.

  52. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus program, download the file named
  53. NAV95PCH.EXE. Place the file in an empty folder and execute NAV95PCH.EXE
  54. to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions are included in the
  55. READNOW.TXT file.

  57. NAV95PCH.EXE is located where the monthly virus definitions files
  58. updates are normally found. It is available for download from the
  59. Symantec BBS, the Symantec FTP or Web sites, CompuServe, America Online,
  60. or Microsoft Network. You can also call Customer Service at (800)
  61. 441-7234 to order a disk set.

  64. To update Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 virus definitions files:

  66. 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater 
  67.    program (09NAV96.EXE).
  68. 2. Double-click on the file 09NAV96.EXE.
  69.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  70. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive. 
  71.    This activates the new virus definitions.
  72. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions
  73.    as well.

  75. Norton AntiVirus 3.0

  79. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus 3.0 (NAV.EXE or
  80. NAVW.EXE) is dated earlier than February 23, 1996, you need to upgrade
  81. your software before updating the virus definitions files. Using older
  82. versions of Norton AntiVirus will cause false detections when the new
  83. virus definitions are installed. The Norton AntiVirus 3.0 upgrade
  84. program updates Norton AntiVirus to detect and eliminate a new class of
  85. viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft Word
  86. document and template files, and  Microsoft Excel files.

  89. UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and execute
  90. UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions are

  101. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files, use one of the
  102. following procedures. Either procedure will update both the Norton
  103. AntiVirus 3.0 DOS and Windows components.

  105. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from Windows:
  106.  
  107. 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater 
  108.    program (09NAV96.EXE).
  109. 2. Double-click on the file 09NAV96.EXE.
  110.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  111. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your
  112.    drive. This activates the new virus definitions.
  113. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions
  114.    as well.

  116. To update Norton AntiVirus 3.0 virus definitions files from DOS:
  117.  
  118. 1. Change to the directory where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater 
  119.    program (09NAV96.EXE).
  120. 2. From the DOS prompt, type 09NAV96.EXE and press Enter. 
  121.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  122. 3. After the update is complete, start Norton AntiVirus and scan your
  123.    drive. This activates the new virus definitions.
  124. 4. Restart your computer so that Auto-Protect uses the new definitions
  125.    as well.

  128. Norton AntiVirus for NetWare version 2.0
  129. ========================================

  132. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare,
  133. version 2.0 is dated earlier than December 13, 1995, you must upgrade
  134. your software before updating the virus definitions files. The new
  135. version of Norton AntiVirus for NetWare detects and eliminates a new
  136. class of viruses called macro viruses. These viruses infect Microsoft
  137. Word document and template files, and Microsoft Excel files.

  139. For information on how to receive the upgrade, call Customer Service 
  140. at (800) 441-7234.

  143. To update Norton AntiVirus for NetWare virus definitions files:
  144.  
  145. 1. On a workstation connected to the network, change to the directory
  146.    where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater program (09NAV96.EXE).
  147. 2. Map a drive letter to the volume and directory where Norton AntiVirus
  148.    for NetWare is installed. You must have WRITE access to the mapped
  149.    drive.
  150. 3. Disable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  151.    Choose DISABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for
  152.    NetWare Windows configuration window or press F3 at the NAVNLM server
  153.    console screen.
  154. 4. From a DOS prompt, type 09NAV96.EXE [path] and press Enter.
  155.    [path] is the location mapped in step 2. Follow the instructions on
  156.    screen.
  157. 5. Enable the Norton AntiVirus for NetWare NLM.
  158.    Choose ENABLE NLM from the Tools menu in the Norton AntiVirus for
  159.    NetWare Windows configuration window or press F2 at the NAVNLM server
  160.    console screen.

  162. Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  163. ================================

  166. Important Notice: If your version of Norton AntiVirus Network Manager
  167. (NAVNET.EXE) is dated before February, 1996, you must upgrade your
  168. software before updating the virus definitions files. Using an older
  169. version of the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager with the new virus
  170. definitions may generate false alarms.

  172. To upgrade your Norton AntiVirus Network Manager program, download the
  173. file named UPDATEME.EXE. Place the file in an empty directory and
  174. execute UPDATEME.EXE to extract its contents. Step-by-step instructions
  175. are included in the READ.ME file.

  177. After updating Norton AntiVirus Network Manager, you must do the following:
  178.  
  179. 1. Delete all VIRSP*.DAT files from the Norton AntiVirus Network Manager 
  180.    directory.
  181. 2. Recreate your .NNS files using the new _DEFAULT.NNS as a template.

  192. To update Norton AntiVirus Network Manager virus definitions files:

  207. To update Norton AntiVirus Scanner for NT virus definitions files:

  209. 1. Change to the folder where you downloaded the Intelligent Updater 
  210.    program (09NAV96.EXE).
  211. 2. At a command prompt, type 09NAV96.EXE and press Enter.
  212.    Follow the instructions on screen.
  213. 3. Start Norton AntiVirus and scan your drive.
  214.    This activates the new virus definitions.
