  68.           Almost  everyone  has  had the frustrating experience of spending
  69.           an hour or so browsing the titles in a video store only to end up
  70.           with  a  movie  you didn't like anyway.  The purpose of MOVIES TO
  71.           GO! is to help you discover movies that  suit your personal taste
  72.           so  that  you  will  spend  more time watching  enjoyable  movies
  73.           instead of wandering the isles of the video store.

  75.           This booklet  will  introduce  you  to  MOVIES TO GO!'s  powerful
  76.           search features.  After a few minutes you  will  be  a  master at
  77.           finding movies:

  79.             - with your favorite actors / actresses
  80.             - directed by the most talented directors
  81.             - in categories such as comedy, romance, drama, war, etc.
  82.             - which have been assigned a particular rating by the MPAA
  83.             - without offensive language or scenes
  84.             - which won Academy Awards
  85.             - in a special category, such as "Dog Movies" or "Tough Guys"

  91.                              WHY MOVIES TO GO! IS UNIQUE

  94.           MOVIES TO GO! is different  than  the  other  books  and software
  95.           about movies in the following ways:

  97.               1. The reviews were not  written  by  movie critics, but were
  98.                  written by ordinary people who like to watch movies.
  99.  
  100.               2. MOVIES TO GO!  is  comprised mainly of  movies  which  are
  101.                  enjoyable to watch.  We don't want MOVIES TO GO! (and your
  102.                  hard drive) cluttered with poor movies.

  104.               3. Most  sources  list  only  the director, principal actors,
  105.                  MPAA  rating, length, and a short synopsis.  MOVIES TO GO!
  106.                  goes further by  listing  up to three categories, the main
  107.                  characters,   several    special    categories,   possible
  108.                  objectionable content, and a detailed review.

  110.               4. MOVIES TO GO!  has stunning, fun-filled graphics!   People
  111.                  who have reviewed  at  least ten movies have their picture
  112.                  displayed  on the screen.  We  are  currently  working  on

  125.                                     THE MAIN MENU
  126.

  128.           One of the first things that appear on  the  screen  is  the MAIN
  129.           MOVIE MENU.   In  the  upper  right  hand corner is the number of
  130.           movies  this  menu  contains.  To display the information about a
  131.           certain movie just type the first few letters of the title.
  132.  
  133.           For  example, if you want to see the  information  on  the  movie
  134.           RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, type "raiders" and the  movie  with  the
  135.           closest  matching  title  (in this case, Raiders of the Lost Ark)
  136.           will be highlighted on the screen.  Press the [Enter] Key to look
  137.           at the information MOVIES TO GO! has stored about the movie.

  144.           Unless you know exactly which movie you want,  you  will probably
  145.           find that the MAIN MOVIE MENU has too many movies listed to be of
  146.           much use.  Press  the  [F2] key to search for particular types of
  147.           movie  you enjoy watching.  You can do  the  following  types  of
  148.           searches:
  149.  
  150.             - Category    (Action, Adventure, Comedy, Romance, War, etc.)
  151.             - Review  (Good, Average, and Poor)
  152.             - Cast    (John Wayne, Harrison Ford, Sigorney Weaver, etc)
  153.             - Director    (John Ford, Woody Allen, Steven Spielberg, etc.)
  154.             - Year    (1992, 1940 - 1949, 1980 - 1999, etc.)
  155.             - Rating  (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, and None)
  156.             - Key Word    (Disney Movies, Nothing Offensive, etc.)
  157.             - Any combination of the above

  160.           CATEGORY SEARCHES

  162.           A Category search is the first menu option; to  select  it  press
  163.           the  [Enter] key.  The Category Menu  lists  25  categories  from
  164.           which you can choose:

  186.           Action       movies  usually have  battles,  fight  scenes,  drug
  187.                        dealers,   criminals,   guns,   karate,  fast  cars,
  188.                        explosions, chase scenes, and other violent themes.
  189.  
  190.           Adventure    movies have pirates, heroes, jungles,  wild animals,
  191.                        exploring,  mountains, space ships, or other  larger
  192.                        than life experiences.
  193.  
  194.           Animated     movies are composed primarily of cartoon characters.
  195.  
  196.           Children     means   that  the  movie  was  aimed  primarily   at
  197.                        children, not adults.  A recent  example  is TEENAGE
  198.                        MUTANT NINJA TURTLES  II.   This is different than a
  199.                        "Family" movie, in that family movies have something
  200.                        to interest mom and dad too.

  202.           Comedy       is a movie which shows  the  lighter  side  of life.
  203.                        This is a broad category and will comprise about one
  204.                        fourth of all  the movies in MOVIES TO GO! Searching
  205.                        for comedy movies should usually be combined  with a
  206.                        search in another  category.  For example, searching
  207.                        for Action-Comedies would list such movies as LETHAL
  208.                        WEAPON. For details, see "Searches in More  Than One
  209.                        Category" below.

  211.           Crime        has do do with illegal activities  where  the police
  212.                        or private detectives get involved.
  213.  
  214.           Documentary  movies are based on fact, and are  written primarily
  215.                        to provide information about  an  event,  person, or
  216.                        place.
  217.  
  218.           Drama        shows the serious side of  life.  As with the comedy
  219.                        category, "Drama" covers more than one third  of the
  220.                        movies in MOVIES TO GO!  Searching for dramas should
  221.                        usually  be  combined   with  a  search  in  another
  222.                        category.  For details, see "Searches  in  More Than
  223.                        One Category" below.

  225.           Family       movies are good, clean,  movies  that  will interest
  226.                        both adults  and children.  Walt Disney was a master
  227.                        at producing family movies.

  229.           Fantasy      usually  has  dragons, mythology,  sorcery,  ghosts,
  230.                        time travel, and other fun stuff.

  232.           Fitness      is usually videos aimed at helping you  get yourself
  233.                        in shape.

  235.           Foreign      is  a movie made outside the  United  States,  in  a
  236.                        language  other  than English, or  is  subtitled  or
  237.                        dubbed.

  247.           Historical   movies are  based on an  historical event.  However,
  248.                        most  historical  movies  are better at entertaining
  249.                        audiences  than  they  are  at depicting an accurate
  250.                        representation of what  really happened and what the
  251.                        people were like.
  252.  
  253.           Horror       movies  have  monsters,  werewolves,  vampires,  and
  254.                        other scary creatures.   Many  recent  horror movies
  255.                        have ax murderers, slashers, rapists and psychopaths
  256.                        who fill the  screen  with  violence;  and  for this
  257.                        reason, we omitted most of the modern horror movies.
  258.  
  259.           Intrigue     is spy movies, and other cloak-and-dagger fun stuff.
  260.                        You will find all the James Bond films listed in the
  261.                        intrigue category.
  262.  
  263.           Music Video  takes  a  popular  song  and  combines  it  with  an
  264.                        entertaining video script to  more  fully  bring the
  265.                        mood of the song to life.  They are usually centered
  266.                        around just one performer or music group.
  267.  
  268.           Musical      is both "musicals",  such  as THE SOUND OF MUSIC and
  269.                        movies  which revolve around music such as  AMADEUS.
  270.                        Most of Elvis Presley's movies are listed  under the
  271.                        category "musical" but they aren't "musicals" in the
  272.                        traditional sense of the word.

  274.           Mystery      movies  usually  have a detective  trying  to  piece
  275.                        together the parts of a complex puzzle.
  276.  
  277.           Romance      is a movie where two people fall in love and  try to
  278.                        build a relationship.
  279.  
  280.           Sci-Fi       Science  fiction  movies are usually  set  in  outer
  281.                        space, have aliens, ray  guns,  flying  saucers, and
  282.                        other fun stuff.
  283.  
  284.           Sports       is a movie about basketball, baseball, boxing, etc.
  285.  
  286.           Suspense     movies keep the audience biting their fingernails in
  287.                        anticipation of what is about to happen next.

  289.           War          movies were  very popular after World War II, but we
  290.                        usually   categorize  any  movie  which  has   armed
  291.                        conflict  as  a  major theme as a "war" movie.  That
  292.                        was the rationale for  this  classification  for the
  293.                        movie ROBIN HOOD -- PRINCE OF THIEVES.

  295.           Westerns     usually take place in North America during  the late
  296.                        1800s,  but  some  westerns  take place in Australia
  297.                        too.

  308.           SEARCHES IN MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY

  310.           MOVIES TO GO! is unique in  movies  can  be  categorized in up to
  311.           three   different  categories.    To  categorize,  for   example,
  312.           "Westerns"  all together and pretend they are  all  the  same  is
  313.           preposterous.  The highly dramatic western HIGH NOON is more like
  314.           the science fiction movie OUTLAND  than it is Mel Brook's western
  315.           comedy BLAZING SADDLES.
  316.  
  317.           You will have more success finding movies you want to  watch with
  318.           MOVIES TO GO!  if  you   search   for  movies  in  at  least  two
  319.           categories.   After you have pressed  the  [F2] Search  key,  and
  320.           selected  the  "Category"  menu  option,  use the arrow  keys  to
  321.           highlight  the  category  your  are  interested  in.   Press  the
  322.           [F3] Mark  key to "Mark" that category, and  arrow  to  the  next
  323.           category you are interested in.  Press the [F3] key to  mark that
  324.           category,  then press the [Enter] key.  Now  press  Find  It!  to
  325.           begin your search.

  327.           Only MOVIES TO GO! allows you to distinguish between movies which
  328.           are Action-Comedy, Romance-Comedy,  Drama-Comedy, Western-Comedy,
  329.           and over 13,000 different category combinations.  Use it!

  333.           REVIEW SEARCHES

  335.           MOVIES TO GO! rates movies in one of three categories:
  336.               Good
  337.               Average
  338.               Poor
  339.  
  340.           We  have  made  an attempt to include mostly "Good" and "Average"
  341.           movies in MOVIES TO GO!, but you are the final judge  of  what  a
  342.           "good"  movie  is.   Movies which were among the Top  10  in  box
  343.           office gross for the year were judged as "Good",  as  were  those
  344.           nominated for Best Picture by  the Academy of Motion Picture Arts
  345.           and  Sciences.  Other pictures, such as  "Children  of  a  Lesser
  346.           God", which was  #47  in  box  office gross receipts at only $8.7
  347.           Million are listed as "Good" because the reviewer  liked  it very
  348.           much.
  349.  
  350.           As you can see,  Review  Searches are pretty subjective.  Keep in
  351.           mind that many fine films haven't been reviewed at all  and won't
  352.           appear in any  of  the  three  categories.    This  number should
  353.           decrease in the future as more and more people submit reviews for
  354.           these movies to us.  For information about how to  submit reviews
  355.           for   publication  in  MOVIES TO GO!,  see  the  section   titled
  356.           "Submitting Reviews for publication in MOVIES TO GO!".

  449.           The  director's job is to make sure that all the parts of a movie
  450.           come together in a way which will tell the story best. If a movie
  451.           is  extremely well done, the director was a big part of it.  Some
  452.           of the best directors include: John Ford, Steven Spielberg, Frank
  453.           Capra, Robert Wise, William Wyler, Billy Wilder,  Michael Curtiz,
  454.           Elia Kazan, John Huston, Joseph  L.  Mankiewicz,  George Stevens,
  455.           Fred Zinnemann, David Lean, Robert Benton, Robert Redford, George
  456.           Cukor, George  Roy Hill, Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Milos
  457.           Forman, Bernardo Bertolucci,  Sydney Pollack, Oliver Stone, Barry
  458.           Levinson,  John  Sturges, Peter Wier,  Richard  Donner,  Jonathan
  459.           Demme, Ridley Scott, just to name a few!

  462.           Search for the movies  by  some of the above directors; you won't
  463.           be disappointed!  Here's how to search for all movies  which were
  464.           directed by Michael Curtiz:

  491.           YEAR SEARCHES

  493.           Do you like  old  movies,  or  would you rather watch more recent
  494.           movies?  The year search feature will help you narrow  your movie
  495.           list even further.  For example, here's how you  search  for  all
  496.           movies which were released in 1980 or later:
  497.               1. Press the [F2] Search key
  498.               2. Select "Year" from the search menu
  499.               3. Type 1980 in the "From Year" field, then press [Enter]
  500.               4. Leave the "To Year" field blank by pressing [Enter]
  501.               5. FIND IT!
  502.  
  503.           To search for a single year, type that  year  in  both  the "From
  504.           Year" and "To Year" fields.

  506.           To search for all the movies in a  range  of  years,  enter those
  507.           years in the "From Year" and "To Year" fields.

  511.           RATING SEARCHES

  513.           The Motion  Picture  Association  of  America  (MPAA)  has issued
  514.           ratings to most movies released after 1968 which will give you an
  515.           idea of a movie's possible objectionable material.  These ratings
  516.           are:
  517.  
  518.               G     "General Audiences.  All ages admitted."
  519.  
  520.               PG    "Parental Guidance Suggested.  Some material may not be
  521.                     suitable for children.
  522.  
  523.               PG-13 "Parents  Strongly  Cautioned.  Some  material  may  be
  524.                     inappropriate for children under 13."
  525.  
  526.               R     "Restricted.  Under 17 requires accompanying parent  or
  527.                     adult guardian."
  528.  
  529.               NC-17 "No children under 17 admitted."
  530.  
  531.           Note:  MPAA ratings have undergone slight changes over the years.
  532.           Movies rated which were previously  rated "GP", we have listed as
  533.           "PG"; movies previously  rated  "M" are listed as "PG-13"; movies
  534.           previously rated "X" are listed as "NC-17".

  536.           To  search  for  movies which have been designated with a certain
  537.           rating press  the [F2] Search key, select "Review" from the menu,
  538.           arrow down the the desired rating, press [Enter], then FIND IT!
  539.  
  540.           If  you  are  looking to avoid movies  which  have  objectionable
  541.           material,  do a multiple search for "G",  "PG"  and  "Not  Rated"
  542.           movies by "marking"  these  categories  with  the  [F3] Mark key.
  543.           NOTE: Be cautious of movies issued after 1980 which fall into the
  544.           "Not  Rated" category. Some films, such  as  ANGEL  HEART,  9 1/2

  552.           WEEKS, and  WARRIOR QUEEN have unrated, more explicit versions in

  558.           KEY WORD SEARCHES

  560.           Key word searches are perhaps the most fun searches to do of all!
  561.           You can search for literally  ANYTHING using the Key Word Search.
  562.           We  have  tried  to  make  it  easier  for you to find movies  of
  563.           particular interest by adding the "Special Categories" section.
  564.           To search for a key word, or group of words do the following:

  674.                        HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF MOVIES TO GO!

  677.           Performing a multiple search is the key to instantly displaying a
  678.           list of enjoyable movies on your screen.  A few dozen key strokes
  679.           is a lot easier than aimlessly wandering the isles of  your video
  680.           store!  For example:
  681.  
  682.           Let's  say you've had a long day at work and feel like watching a
  683.           good, romantic comedy.  You've seen most of the recent stuff, and
  684.           you want to watch the movie with your teenage  daughter,  not  be
  685.           embarrassed  by lots of sex  scenes.  In other words, you want to
  686.           do  a  compound  Category Search, a Review Search, a Year Search,
  687.           and a Key Word Search simultaneously.
  688.  
  689.           It's really not that difficult.  Here's how:
  690.                1. Press the [F2] Search key
  691.                2. Select "Category" from the Search Menu
  692.                3. Use the [F3] Mark key as explained above  to  "mark" both
  693.                   "Comedy" and "Romance" categories, then press [Enter]
  694.                4. Select "Review" from the Search Menu
  695.                5. Arrow down to "Good" and press [Enter]
  696.                6. Select "Year" from the Search Menu
  697.                7. Enter From Year "1900" To Year "1980" as explained above
  698.                8. Select "Key Word" from Search Menu
  699.                9. Enter the phrase "Nothing Offensive"
  700.               10. FIND IT!

  702.           After  the search, the titles of twenty  or  more  good  romantic
  703.           comedies  will  be  listed  on  the  the  screen.      Read  what
  704.           MOVIES TO GO! has to say about each one, and press the [F4] Print
  705.           key on the titles you are interested in.  Take  the  list to take
  706.           to your video store;  better  yet, call your video store first to
  707.           make sure the titles you  want are available.  MOVIES TO GO! will
  708.           help you sort through the thousands of movie titles and will help
  709.           you get the most out of your video dollar.

  713.                          DIFFERENCES IN THE GRAPHICS VERSION

  716.           The graphics edition of MOVIES TO GO! requires an EGA monitor and
  717.           640 K of memory.   Because  of the number of graphics images that
  718.           are displayed on the screen, we recommend that  your  computer be
  719.           at least a 386, but this is not required.

  721.           We originally wanted  to  release MOVIES TO GO! with at least 500
  722.           scanned photos of cast members; unfortunately, we weren't able to
  723.           obtain permission for these photos yet.  Version 1.4 was released
  724.           with only two:  James Stewart and Donna Reed from the movie "It's
  725.           a  Wonderful  Life",  which  is  in  the  public  domain.  We are
  726.           currently asking movie  and  video  companies  for  press release
  727.

  735.           photos  which  we  can scan, and add to MOVIES TO GO!  Registered
  736.           users will be notified when these photos become available.

  738.           If you are using a mouse, the graphics  edition  of MOVIES TO GO!
  739.           has  the  ability  to  do  searches from the NOW SHOWING  screen.
  740.           Simply click the mouse on the category, actor,  director,  or key
  741.           word you want  to search for.  If you want to search by more than
  742.           one category, click between the two  you  want to search for.  If
  743.           you want to search for two words, click between them.

  745.           If you find the graphics version too sluggish, you  can  run  the
  746.           standard version by running the command TEXT instead of MOVIES.

  750.                       HOW MOVIES WERE SELECTED FOR MOVIES TO GO!

  753.           Over 50,000 movies have been released in this  century,  and more
  754.           than 500 new movies are released each year.  Separating  the best
  755.           movies  from the run of the mill is not an easy task, and is  one
  756.           which we continue with every day.  We selected movies  which fall
  757.           into at least one of the following categories:

  759.               1.  We chose movies which were one of the top  10  movies  in
  760.                   box office gross ticket sales in the United  States  in a
  761.                   given  year.    "Gone With the Wind"  qualifies  in  this
  762.                   category for three different years.
  763.  
  764.               2.  We  researched  movies  which  were  nominated  for  Best
  765.                   Picture  by  the  Academy  of  Motion  Picture  Arts  and
  766.                   Sciences.
  767.  
  768.               3.  We found movies which were  highly  acclaimed  by several
  769.                   movie critics.
  770.  
  771.               4.  Lastly, we added movies in which a movie reviewer wrote a
  772.                   credible review about a movie they liked very much.

  775.                  SUBMITTING REVIEWS FOR PUBLICATION IN MOVIES TO GO!

  778.           Since the  reviews  for  MOVIES TO GO!  are  written  by ordinary
  779.           people who like to watch  movies, we naturally, are interested in
  780.           having as many people as possible submit reviews for publication.
  781.           You  can  submit  reviews  for  your  favorite  movies  with  the
  782.           following understanding:

  784.             1. ImagiSOFT will become the owner of the  material  you submit
  785.                to  us.    We have the right to make editorial changes or to
  786.                not include your review in MOVIES TO GO!

  804.                reviews are accepted for publication,  we  will  send  you a
  805.                free update which contains  your  reviews  and  your scanned

  809.                whether  or  not  we  have  accepted  the  reviews you  have
