  1. PixFolio - Windows Image Viewer and Catalog Manager (Shareware)

  7. PixFolio (formerly ShowGif) is a Microsoft Windows program that can view a
  8. variety of bitmapped graphics formats and maintain multiple catalogs of
  9. images. Version 1.04 is being distributed as Shareware for $35.00 plus $4
  10. Shipping and Handling ($7 outside of US and Canada) by the author,
  11. Allen C. Kempe. You are free to use PixFolio for a 30 day period. After that
  12. time, you are expected to register your copy and pay the $35.00 registration
  13. fee (plus shipping & handling).

  15. The graphics formats currently supported are:
  16.     BMP -   Windows Bitmap
  17.     CLP -   Windows clipboard file
  18.     DRW/GRF - Micrografx draw and graph files.
  19.     EPS -   Encapsulated Postscript with imbedded TIFF preview images.
  20.     FLI/FLC - Autodesk Animator and Animator Pro (tm) files.
  21.     GIF -   CompuServe Graphics Interchange Format
  22.     ICO -   Windows Icon
  23.     IFF -   IFF/LBM (Amiga) used by Computer Eyes frame grabber.
  24.     IMG -   GEM/IMG (Digital Research).
  25.     MAC -   Macintosh MacPaint files.
  26.     PCX -   Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush
  27.     RLE -   Windows Run Length Encoded
  28.     TGA -   Targa
  29.     TIFF-   Tag Image Format. Most formats including 24 bit color
  30.             are supported.
  31.     WMF -   Windows Metafile.
  32.     WPG -   WordPerfect Graphics

  34. Note: Not all variations that may be possible in the above file formats have
  35. been tested due to lack of suitable test files.
  36.  
  37. The major feature of PixFolio is the ability to build catalogs of
  38. images, that may reside on different disks. The catalog can then be searched
  39. and images can be easily located. Provisions are made for saving a primary and
  40. backup location for the image concurrently. To enhance searching for a
  41. particular image the program can display postage stamp images in a matrix.
  42.  
  43. The ability to read an image in one format and to save it in another allows
  44. the program to be used as a file conversion utility.
  45.  
  46. PixFolio version 1.04 is Shareware (see the accompanying file "PIXREGST.ME").
  47. PixFolio may be freely distributed on Bulletin Boards so long as all files
  48. are included along with this file.

  78.     New File - create a blank image suitable for pasting from the
  79.            clipboard.

  124. Other:
  125.     Using the mouse in the main viewing window, a marquee can be
  126.     selected for copying or cutting to the clipboard. The right mouse
  127.     button can be used to draw a stretch marquee where the selected
  128.     image rectangle is copied.
  129.  
  130. Help:
  131.     Context sensitive help is included for all menu items.
  132.  
  133. ******** Equipment Requirements **********
  134.  
  135. While PixFolio will execute in a minimal Windows installation, for example, a
  136. 286 with 2 megabytes of memory, program operation will be severely inhibited
  137. by a lack of memory. On such a configuration, large bitmaps, especially 8 or
  138. 24 bit images may fail. Other applications could be adversely affected as
  139. well and fail with unexpected UAE's. Actual results will vary depending upon
  140. the amount of memory used by other applications running concurrently.
  141.  
  142. PixFolio was developed and tested on a 20-MHz 386 with 8 megabytes of memory.
  143. It is recommended that PixFolio be run on a machine with at least 2 and pre-
  144. ferrably, 4 megabytes of memory. Running in 386-Enhanced mode will also
  145. make available the benefits of virtual memory.
  146.  
  147. The display of images containing more than 16 colors requires that you have
  148. a Super VGA or better video display and a 256 color Windows device driver in
  149. order to display the full range of colors in the image. However, PixFolio
  150. incorporates dithering functions that will allow display of a 256
  151. color image using a 16 color driver such as the standard VGA driver. Such
  152. operations are slow and the results are not as good as if you have a video
  153. display capable of displaying 256 colors.
  154.  
  155. ********** Program Limitations *************
  156.  
  157. PixFolio has no limit on the number of catalogs that can be created or the
  158. size of these catalogs except those restraints imposed by your file system
  159. and te amount of available memory. However, the following points should be
  160. noted:
  161.  
  162. 1. The size of a catalog is limited by the amount of disk space where it
  163.    resides or 2,048 index entries. Catalog records are variable length and
  164.    depend upon the type of image and how big the comments are.
  165.  
  166. 2. PixFolio may encounter difficulty with extremely large images, those in
  167.    excess of 1024 x 768 pixels. This is particularly true of color images
  168.    and even more so by 24 bit color or gray scale images. This is primarily
  169.    due to the increased memory requirements.
  170.  
  171. 3. While PixFolio and Windows supports 24 bit color and gray scale images,
  172.    the display of such images using a video driver that only displays 256
  173.    colors, can result in some lengthy delays whenever windows has to realize
  174.    the 24 bit RGB data to an 8 bit palette. It may take 15 to 20 minutes to
  175.    realize a 640 x 480 image depending upon the speed of your machine.
  176.    Dithering a 24 bit image to 256 colors can take more than an hour in some
  177.    cases. If you plan to work with 24 bit images, you may wish to invest in
  178.    a video board that supports "high color". One such board that appears to
  179.    work quite well is the ATI VGASTEREO F/X card.
  180.  
  181. 4. The support for GIF animation in PixFolio requires large amounts of free
  182.    memory. GIF animation files with a large number of frames or overlays may
  183.    unexpectedly fail if PixFolio runs out of memory.
  184.  
  185.    Autodesk FLI/FLC animation files likewise require large amounts om memory.
  186.    To provide maximum performance, the entire image is loaded into memory to
  187.    reduce delays caused by reading from disk. A lack of physical memory that
  188.    requires Windows to utilize paged virtual memory (in 386 Enhanced mode)
  189.    can result in "jumpy" animations. In addition a high performance video
  190.    board and driver is recommended to optimally display animation files
  191.    without pauses that destroy the effect.
  192.  
  193. 5. PixFolio has not been rigorously tested in a network environment. The
  194.    affect of network operations and more than one user accessing PixFolio
  195.    files concurrently cannot be predicted.
  196.  
  197. 6. Not all graphics formats are supported equally with respect to reading and
  198.    saving a file. For example, not all of the compression options are
  199.    currently supported for saving TIFF images. GIF images can only be saved
  200.    in GIF87a format. Likewise, some of the more obscure or obsolete formats
  201.    such as 4 color CGA formats for PCX cannot be written although they can be
  202.    read.
  203.  
  204.    CCITT Group 3 and Group 4 TIFF file comprssion formats are not supported at
  205.    this time.
  206.  
  207. 7. The author has not been able to successfully test PixFolio with printers
  208.    that print in color in Windows 3.0. The new HP LaserJet "Intellefont"
  209.    driver does produce good quality halftones from color images without
  210.    dithering.
  211.  
  212.    One user has reported that PixFolio give very good results printing color
  213.    images on Start Micronics NX-1000 Rainbow and NX-1020 printers but you must
  214.    obtain the OEM driver from Star Micronics.
  215.  
  216.    Printer performance when running under Windows 3.1 is much improved. It is
  217.    both faster as well as of higher quality. Changes to the printer drivers
  218.    also enable printing to color printers such as the Epson LQ-2550.
  219.  
  220. 8. The rendition of Windows Metafile (.WMF) images has not been extensivly
  221.    tested with a variety of files. Use at your own risk.
  222.  
  223. 9. The implementation of Micrografx .DRW and .GRF files is not rigorous. Some
  224.    features of these files are not supported. Unless you have Adobe Type
  225.    Manager or scalable typefaces, the rendition of fonts used in these files
  226.    may not be optimal when Windows matches fonts.
  227.  
  228. 10. Other program limitations, if any, can be determined by accessing the
  229.    online context-sensitive help.
  230.  
  231. ******** NOTE **********
  232.  
  233. If you have previously loaded Showgif (the former name of this program), you
  234. should edit your WIN.INI file changing the section name [Showgif] to
  235. [PixFolio]. Catalog file names, e.g. SHOWGIF.CAT need not be renamed but if
  236. you do, be sure to rename the index file, SHOWGIF.CIX also!
  237.  
  238. ****** Installation and Getting Started*******
  239.  
  240. If your copy of PixFolio was received on a distribution diskette, the
  241. installation must be done from within windows by running "SETUP" from drive
  242. A: or B: (whichever is appropriate). This is important as the files on a
  243. distribution diskette are compressed. Otherwise, the following installation
  244. procedure should be followed:
  245.  
  246. It is suggested that the files which constitute PixFolio be placed in their
  247. own subdirectory on your hard disk. These files are:
  248.

  262.     The following file is a Microsoft supplied DLL that provides common
  263.     dialog services and other functionality. You should place this file in
  264.     your Windows\System directory. Future versions of Windows may contain
  265.     newer versions of this file.
  266.  
  267.     COMMDLG.DLL
  268.  
  269. Not necessary for program operation are this file PIXREAD.ME, PIXREGST.FRM
  270. and PIXREGST.ME. PIXPACK.LST is a list of files included in this zip file.
  271. The user guide is USRGUIDE.WRI. It can be printed with Windows Write and
  272. formatted for your particular printer.
  273.  
  274. UPLOADING PIXFOLIO to BBS's.
  275. If you wish to upload PixFolio to your local BBS, a batch file "PIXZIPIT.BAT"
  276. is provided to zip up the files listed in PIXPACK.LST. These files can be
  277. found in your PixFolio directory if you received the version of PixFolio on
  278. a distribution diskette.
  279.  
  280. Once the above files have been located in the subdirectory of your choice,
  281. start Windows and then use the Program Manager "Add" command to add PixFolio
  282. to the desired program group.
  283.  
  284. When PixFolio runs for the first time, it will establish a section in
  285. your WIN.INI file with program variables. These default options should enable
  286. you to start using PixFolio immediately. Once PixFolio is running you may
  287. access the online Help command for specific instructions and explanation of
  288. PixFolio menu commands.
  289.  
  290. A quick review of PixFolio features and operating procedures can be gained by
  291. reviewing the user guide.
  292.  
  293. ****** Credits ******
  294.  
  295. The author of PixFolio would like to recognize the efforts of Mr. Paul Hachey,
  296. (CompuServe Id 76247,3716) who performed an invaluable service by getting
  297. deeply involved in the extensive testing that went on over a period of months.
  298. Paul is responsible for the design of the PixFolio cover page, Icon and
  299. "About" dialog box and his many suggestions greatly influenced the "look and
  300. feel" of PixFolio.
  301.  
  302. ****** Known Bugs in Version 1.01a  that have been corrected ******
  303.  
  304. 1.  Saving an uncompressed PCX file does not create a file that can be
  305.     read by other programs such as Windows Paint. Try the compressed
  306.     option.
  307.  
  308. 2.  The save IFF file format is not working; the resulting file cannot
  309.     be read.
  310.  
  311. 3.  PixFolio does not properly interpret the image origin bit for
  312.     TGA images. Some TGA images may display upside down.
  313.  
  314. 4.  There is a memory allocation problem. After viewing a GIF file,
  315.     an attempt to view a TGA file will result in a "Local Alloc" error.
  316.     It may be necessary to stop and restart PixFolio to read a TGA file.
  317.  
  318. 5.  The "DIB to Screen" radio button on the default Options dialog does
  319.     not work. The option can still be changed from the Options menu.
  320.  
  321. 6.  If you uncatalog a slide that is displayed in Slide View, the slide
  322.     is not erased from the screen and subsequent attempts to access it
  323.     will result in a UAE.
  324.  
  325. 7.  You may experience UAE's after attempting to read a corrupted TIFF
  326.     file.
  327.  
  328. 8.  PixFolio would fail when attempting to create a thumbnail of a large
  329.     image.
  330.  
  331. 9.  The File Open/Save dialog wil now allow direct entry of a pathname in
  332.     lieu of selecting from the listbox.
  333.  
  334. 10. PixFolio "hangs" when the only item in a Catalog is Uncataloged.
  335.  
  336. 11. Windows crashes after exiting PixFolio. (This problem was introduced in
  337.     version 1.02.) This problem could occur if global memory was compacted
  338.     because while PixFolio was running.
  339.  
  340. ***** What's new in Version 1.02 *****
  341.  
  342. New features in version 1.02 include:
  343.  
  344. 1.  Print contents of a catalog, including the thumbnails or print selected
  345.     entries.
  346.  
  347. 2.  Read MACPAINT .MAC files.
  348.  
  349. 3.  Read imbedded TIFF preview images in Encapsulated Postscript .EPS files.
  350.  
  351. 4.  Dither 256 color images to 16 colors when using a standard VGA driver
  352.     which only supports 16 colors. Or dither 24 bit images to 256 colors.
  353.     An "Auto Dither" option has been added which provides for automatically
  354.     dithering an image for display if it's color resolution is greater than
  355.     your display driver's.
  356.  
  357. 5.  Cut and paste different images with different palettes and/or number

  364. 8.  The file list in the Build function can now optionally display only
  365.     those images that are not cataloged.

  367. 9.  Support has been added for users of PixFolio using Bernoulli boxes or

  370. 10. "Slide View" has been renamed "Thumbnail View".

  372. 11. PixFolio will maintain the original color information. Previous
  373.     versions would reduce color resolution to that of the display whenever
  374.     editing operations took place. For example, you can cut and paste 24
  375.     bit images even if you don't have a 24 bit video display and retain the
  376.     24 bit color data in the image. Likewise, PixFolio will not lose color
  377.     information when working on 8 bit color images and using the standard
  378.     VGA, 16 color driver.

  380. 12. The contents of a catalog, less the thumbnail image, can be written to
  381.     a standard ASCII comma-delimited file which can be read by many
  382.     database programs or spreadsheets.
  383.  
  384. 13. Another application can be launched from the Thumbnail view using a
  385.     selected image file.
  386.  
  387. 14.    Support has been added for the Windows MetaFile clipboard format.
  388.  
  389. 15. Date and time in catalog entries will now be formatted per WIN.INI
  390.     (Control Panel - International) settings rather than customary USA
  391.     usage. (See the special note below).

  778. If you are upgrading from a previous version of PixFolio, you may wish to
  779. update the default extensions (via the default Options command) or the
  780. extensions defined for each catalog (via the Select Catalog command) to add
  781. the new extensions for file types ".EPS", ".ICO", ".IMG" and ".MAC" if you
  782. plan to use these file types. Alternatively, you may change these options
  783. by editing the PixFolio section of your WIN.INI file.

  785. If you are not using the US standard date and time formats, PixFolio will not
  786. convert dates and times in existing catalogs to the format specified in your
  787. Windows WIN.INI file. However, all new catalog entries will use these formats.

  789. PixFolio defaults to WIN.INI for storing program options. All options will be
  790. stored following a [PixFolio] header. If you do not want to store program
  791. options in WIN.INI, PixFolio can save its options in a file named
  792. "PIXFOLIO.INI" which can be located in the Windows directory, the PixFolio
  793. program directory, or any directory listed in your PATH statement. If you want
  794. to excercise this option, use NotePad to delete the entries for PixFolio in
  795. your WIN.INI file and paste them into a new file named "PIXFOLIO.INI".
