- The 3rd Floppy Sam J. Morris
-
- And Why I wrote this simple Program West Nyack, NY
-
-
-
- I recently received a computer shipped by United Parcel
- Service. Upon unpackaging the computer I noticed the 1.2 Mb
- 5.25" Floppy drive was placed at the bottom of the exposed
- drive bay area.
-
- I thought that was odd to have the `A' Drive at the bottom.
- The `A' Drive is usually at the top with the `B' Drive just
- below. The lower drive position is generally reserved for a
- 3rd Floppy Drive or a tape backup drive.
-
-
- Well, I said, I have to open up the case anyway to install my
- half height 338 Meg Hard drive. I will simply switch positions
- with `A' and the 3rd Floppy `D' Drive.
-
- Not so! The 1.44 Meg 3.5" and the 720 Kb 3.5" only had Drive
- Select positions for D0 and D1.
-
- The 1.2 Mb 5.25" Drive had the usual complement of 4 Drive Select
- positions, D0, D1, D2, and D3. This Drive was in Drive Select D1
- which was the same as the `A' and `B' Drives. I began to wonder
- if the ULTRASTOR Controller card would be able to detect where
- the drives were physically mounted and know how to distinguish the
- drives as `A' `B' and `D' automatically. I then proceeded to place
- the hard drive in its mounting as the `C' drive.
-
- I placed the MS-DOS 4.01 Install Disk in the 5.25" Drive and turned
- the power on. Two of the three Floppy drives lit up at the same
- time, `B' and `D'. I was a bit supprised, not totally though, as I
- began to realize it would have been impossible to have tested the
- functionability of all three drives as the 3rd Floppy must have a
- DEVICE= Driver.sys statement in the CONFIG.SYS file inorder for
- DOS to recognize that the 3rd Floppy is present as well as its type
- and paremeters. I say it would have been impossible because this
- computer shipped without a hard drive and a no DOS was installed.
-
- So I was puzzled as to how these three drives could all have the
- same Drive Select D1 and function as seperate drives. Well, as it
- turns out only 2 actually have the same drive select as the `A'
- Drive has a twist in the cable before it reaches the last connector.
-
- I then moved the 5.25" 1.2 Mb drive to the `A' position, I had to do
- this inorder to install the DOS from the 5.25" Diskettes.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- I now had the three drives configured as A = 1.2 Mb 5.25" B = 1.44
- Mb 3.5" and D = 720 Kb 3.5". I ran the setup in CMOS and
- set drives A and B respectively.
-
- For the next 4 days and nights I worked without sleep to figure out
- how to get this 3rd Floppy Drive working. Included with my computer
- was a Utilities disk of which I was certain contained that most
- cherished Device Driver File for the 3rd Floppy.
-
- Sure enough there was a Device Driver for a 3rd Floppy on the
- Utilities Disk. I was sure to have just what I needed. Days
- went by as if to be only hours passing, while I continued to
- make that 3rd Floppy work.
-
- I contacted ULTRASTOR and found the DEVICE Driver I had was not
- the one I actually needed. Now, somewhat relieved that I was not
- completly losing my mind, I ask ULTRASTOR if I could call in to
- a computer at ULTRASTOR and Download that precious Device Driver
- file. The answer was NO! I was told by ULTRASTOR that I must get
- that file from the Dealer where I got the Controller Card.
-
- Desperately, I called the Computer Company but, all Support people
- were busy. Hours went by as I repeatedly called for support. Finally
- the Computer Company closed for the day and I was facing a longer
- wait. Suddenly, I remembered that the Computer Company had an
- Electronic Bulletin Board. I turned on a High Speed 9600 V.32 modem
- and went into action to get that most needed file.
-
- Connection to the Bulletin Board was made at the low speed of 2400
- Baud. I went right to the Files section and began looking for that
- Device Driver file to be listed. NO LUCK!
-
- I Downloaded many files of which I thought might possibly contain
- the file within a compressed file. I Downloaded other files of
- which I thought might work in place of the one I was after.
-
- Seventeen Hours later and 3 hours of sleep on the computer room
- floor, I awoke with another dream or invision. I thought about
- that Bulletin Board. I have a Bulletin Board myself and once in
- awhile, a file will be placed on the Bulletin Board but not get
- listed.
-
- I crawled from the computer room floor into the drivers seat and
- kick started that 9600 Baud modem and dialed the Computer Company
- Bulletin Board again. This time I didn't look around for the file
- to see it's name in print. I went to the files section and requested
- the file by name and Glory Days, there is was ready to send.
-
- After Downloading the file EXFDRV.SYS I then requested the
- Documentation file to tell me how to use it. NO LUCK!

-
- I proceeded to try to use the file with various parameters to no
- avail. Three and a half hours later I again contacted the Computer
- Company in hopes that someone would be around on a Saturday to
- just tell me what parameters should follow the Device statement.
- I was beginning to get a bit warm under the collar now. I ask the
- receptionist to just get me the words that follow the Device
- Statement, I didn't need to speak with a support person. Well,
- Bless that girls heart, she got the information I had long awaited
- and went an extra step for me by faxing it to me.
-
- Now I knew I would have a 3rd Floppy finally. NOT TRUE!
-
- After installing the Device Driver along with the DOS driver.sys
- and appropriate parameters I still did not have a 3rd Floppy that
- would work.
-
- I installed new ribbon cables of every configuration. I laid on the
- floor with DOS manuals, Upgrading Manuals, Technical Reference books
- and the computer documentation as well as print out Documentation
- files. I found hard facts that you must use Drive Select D4 for
- the 3rd Floppy and Drive Select D2 for `A' and `B' as they are
- actually switch to D1 and D2 by the rollover of leads 10 thru 16
- in the twist of the 34 conductor ribbon cable.
-
- I pulled a 1.44 Mb Drive from another coputer that had Drive Select
- positions D0 thru D3 and installed it as the 3rd Floppy pinned out
- as Jumper Drive Select on D3. Well believe me, my hopes were high.
-
- I was able to write to the 3rd Floppy but, could not read from it.
- BACK TO THE BOOKS!
-
- I studied this cable rollover and conductor idenities of the 34
- conductors. All books state clearly that the rollover or twist
- in the 34 conductor cable occurs at the end connector. Never, is
- the twist used prior to the first connector but, in some instances
- twists are put in between connectors to juggle the pinouts and the
- jumpers on Drive Selects where multiple drives are installed, in
- most cases for networks and generally are restricted to the hard
- drives.
-
- Well, now armed with this information and a half dozen ribbon
- cables, I proceeded to resolve this problem. After several hours
- and a pile of destroyed cables, I still had no use of my 3rd
- Floppy.
-
- Finally I tried what the Books say will not work. I put a twist
- in the leads 10 thru 16 of the 34 conductor ribbon cable, PRIOR
- to the first connector. This was the only thing I had not done.
- Guess What! This works. 3rd Floppy in place, reads and writes.
- It shares lighting with Drive `B' when either drive is in use but,
- no conflict in Data transfers on reads or writes.

-
- Having endured this mental challenge of wit, I decided to make
- some notes as they may possibly be able to assist others in the
- quest of a 3rd Floppy.
-
- In the course of putting the notes together I decided that notes
- can get lost or easily misplaced. Therefore, I went a step further
- to make this information easily available by developing a simple
- little program to present the Detailed Information with a computer.
-
- The information can be stored on a Hard Drive or run from a Floppy
- disk drive. This method will assist the Computer Company and its
- technicians at time of assembly and configuration of a system that
- is to have a 3rd Floppy.
-
- I created two sets of files for the program, one for color monitors
- and one for monochrome monitors. For Color type 3C and hit Enter
- For Non Color type 3G and hit Enter. To print the Information just
- type 3P and hit Enter.
