-
- Learning to play:
-
- Hopefully you have access to a piano or at least an inexpensive
- electronic keyboard. As you can see, there are many keys on the keyboard.
- Some are white and some are black. The black keys of the keyboard are
- divided into patterns of two and three. To the left of the TWO BLACK key
- pattern, in the middle or center of the keyboard (under the piano maker's
- name), is MIDDLE C.
- Locate and play MIDDLE C with the FIRST finger (or thumb) of your
- RIGHT hand.

- Now, think of your fingers as having numbers assigned to each one.
- On each hand your thumb will be number 1, your index finger will be number
- two (the finger next to the thumb), your middle finger is number three, the
- next finger is number four, and the little finger is number 5. Remember,
- on both hands the fingers are numbered 1 - 5 from thumb to little finger.

-
- The numbers above show the position of your fingers on the keyboard
- to start out. Yes, there is only one number 1! This is so you can play MIDDLE
- C with either your right or left hand! In this lesson you will not have to
- venture beyond these keys so have no fear, it is EASY TO LEARN TO PLAY!!!
-
- When you run the program you will see the keys being pressed as the
- music plays. You will soon see that it is easy to follow along yourself! The
- number pattern of the first song is: 1,R3,L2,R3,R2,1,R3,L2,R3,R2,1,L4,L3,L2,
- 1,R3,L2,L2,R3. Notice that no L or R is assigned to MIDDLE C. You may use
- either hand for MIDDLE C. Try alternating between your left and right hand
- for MIDDLE C!
-
- Now, run the program and start playing along. The words to the song
- will appear above the screen keys as the notes are played if you want to sing
- along. Remember, Practice is the secret of any musician. A professional
- musician will practice at least 8 hours a day. Seems like a lot doesn't it!
-
- ABOUT THE FIRST LESSON'S SONG:
-
- Music is the only language in the world that is universally understood
- and anyone who listens will "feel" what the music is saying to them. Music is
- written in "happy keys" and "sad keys". This famous Russian Folk-Song is an
- example in a "sad key".
-
- The Song of the Volga Boatmen was sung years ago, before there were
- steam-boats, by the peasants (poor folks) who lived along the banks of the
- river Volga. The people condemned to hard labor were forced to pull heavy
- barges and boats, loaded heavily with merchandise, up the river from one
- village to the next. The plodding along of these poor people was terrible.
- While struggling along, they used to lighten their burden by singing the
- sad strains of this rythmical melody.
-
- Of course, now this type of labor is no longer required and on top
- of that, the Russian folks are in the process of removing their bad style
- of government. Hopefully, soon they too will enjoy a good life as we do
- here in the United States of America. But we must never forget why we do
- have it so good. We fought oppression and won. We must always be ready to
- defend our freedom from anyone who is jealous and wants to take it from us.
-
- We must also pray for those in the world who are seeking their own
- freedom. Maybe if they can't free their own country, they can come to
- America and become a free American too!
