- | WHAT IS SHAREWARE? |
- +----------------------------+
- Welcome to the Shareware revolution. This remarkable method of
- software distribution was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim Button and
- Andrew Fluegelman. It has become a major force in the computer
- industry, helping to reduce software prices and eliminate copy
- protection schemes.
-
- You are encouraged to copy the PC-File Shareware diskette(s) and
- share them freely with others. You have the luxury of trying out the
- complete programs, at your own pace and in the comfort of your own
- home or workplace. This is not a disabled or demo copy, but the
- complete fully-functional working version of the program.
-
- After you have used PC-File for a reasonable evaluation period (not
- to exceed 60 days) you must either stop using it or buy a licensed
- copy from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer.
-
- Why pay at all?
- * You receive the most current copy of the program
- * Bound printed manuals (over 500 pages with screen shots)
- * The option of purchasing pre-defined applications
- * Notification of updates and new products
- * Inexpensive updates (typically 1/3 the retail price)
- * Periodic special price offers (for our registered users only)
- * Your input and ideas help shape future products
- * A sense of pride and ownership, by having honestly participated
- in the Shareware revolution
- * The satisfaction of helping to keep software prices down, by
- supporting a distribution method which doesn't depend on
- expensive advertising campaigns
-
- At ButtonWare, we are committed to the continued development of
- useful, friendly (easy to use), inexpensive software. Your payment is
- very important. It helps to fund the creation of new software
- programs and encourages the Shareware approach to software
- distribution. In essence, your payment is a vote for this program and
- for this method of software sales.
-
- Sincerely,
-
- Jim Button
- Founder and president.

- | DISTRIBUTION RESTRICTIONS |
- +-----------------------------+
-
- Please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software
- with your friends and associates. The following restrictions are
- designed to protect the community of Shareware users and to prevent
- others from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard work, and good
- will of Shareware authors. Exceptions to these conditions must be
- granted in writing from ButtonWare.
-
- 1. Disk vendors (those who sell Shareware disks for a profit)
- must follow the procedure outlined in the "VENDOR.DOC" file.
- 2. Individuals wishing to share PC-File with others must adhere
- to the conditions outlined in the "LICENSE.DOC" file.
- 3. To distribute PC-File via a telecommunications link, you must
- follow the procedure outlined in the "SYSOP.DOC" file.
- 4. A copy of PC-File is available for student use in classrooms.
- Please see EDUCATE.DOC.
- 5. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States,
- Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
-
-
-
- +----------------------------------------+
- | PRINTING A COPY OF THE USER'S MANUAL |
- +----------------------------------------+
-
- If you did not purchase PC-File (complete with printed manual)
- directly from ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer, then you are
- evaluating the program.
-
- We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
- PC-File. The program uses clear, informative menus. Help screens
- are always available. Also, the file "CARD" can be printed to create
- a quick reference card with a summary of the program commands. The
- file "STARTUP" gives answers to the most common start-up problems.
-
- This is sufficient for most people to evaluate the program. However,
- some people prefer to have a copy of the printed manual.
-
- In prior shareware versions of PC-File our manual was over 500 pages
- long and many people complained. Therefore this time we have
- shortened the manual so as to give you complete information about
- each feature but to avoid repetition and the obvious. PLEASE NOTE -
- YOU CAN ALWAYS GET CONTEXT SENSITIVE HELP BY PRESSING F1.
-
- Note that there are no pretty screen pictures in the disk manual
- since that isn't possible in a text file that will print on all
- printers. It's almost 250 pages long so make sure you have enough
- paper in the printer when you are ready to print.
-
- To keep costs down, the on-disk documentation is not included with
- purchased copies of PC-File and cannot be bought directly from
- ButtonWare. Purchased copies include complete printed User's
- Manuals, typeset and bound, which includes screen shots and more
- examples. These manuals are over 500 pages long.
-
- After you have installed the program, the documentation is a text
- file called PCF65.MAN. You can view this document with a text-based
- editor or word processor. You can also print the entire manual by
- going to the PC-File subdirectory and typing
-
- COPY PCF65.MAN PRN
-
- You could also use DOS Print by typing
-
- PRINT PCF65.MAN
-
- It will ask the name of the listing device. Press <ENTER>.
-
- If you need technical support, you can call our bulletin board at
- (206)454-7875, contact us in PCVENA on CompuServe or call our
- technical support line (900)454-8000. There is no charge for the
- first minute on the 900 line. Each minute thereafter is billed at $2
- on your phone bill.
-
-
