-
- Thank you for using this PHONEMAN package from TASCS.
- Please print this short file that briefly describes the PHONEMAN
- program and how to use it. We sincerely hope you find this
- program useful and elect to continue using it.
-
- PHONEMAN is a menu-driven phone and address book manager that
- helps you maintain names, addresses, and phone numbers on your
- personal computer. It works best installed on a hard disk but works
- fine on a 720K (or greater) diskette. PHONEMAN is a great program
- for your laptop computer.
-
- This software package consists of (at least) the following files:
-
- PHONEMAN.BAT (DOS batch file for starting PHONEMAN on hard
- disk from any directory)
- PMAN.COM (the PHONEMAN loader)
- PMAN (the PHONEMAN program)
- PMANHLP.BIN (the PHONEMAN on-line help file)
- PHONEMAN.DOC (information viewable from the PHONEMAN 'Info'
- menu)
- DEFAULT.PBF (File containing the PHONEMAN default file format)
- *.PDV (printer definition files)
- ADDRESS.PBK (Default PHONEMAN phone/address book file)
-
- WHOIS.BAT (Use from the DOS prompt to find names from your
- phone books; utilizes FINDNAME.EXE)
- FINDNAME.EXE (Name finding engine used by WHOIS)
-
- INSTALL.BAT (Hard disk installation; use 'INSTALL C:')
- INSTPBK.EXE (Used by INSTALL.BAT for hard disk installation)
- INFO.TXT (Misc. info; displayed when INSTALL runs)
-
- READ.ME (This file)
- MANUAL.TXT (A manual - print this or load into your word
- processor for "clean" copy)
-
-
- Features Update to PHONEMAN 2.1
-
- This briefly documents new features not covered in the manual and
- clarifies an important issue in using the Dialer.
-
-
- Prefixes and Suffixes now supported by the PHONEMAN dialer
-
- Version 2.1 provides the ability to dial a number from the current
- PHONEMAN phone book using a suffix and/or prefix. The suffix is handy
- when accessing special services (such as "1" for long distance) or to
- access features in a corporate setting (for example, "9" for outside
- line, "8" for long distance). The suffix can be used for access codes
- or similar numbers.
-
- PHONEMAN 2.1 allows 2 different prefixes and 2 different suffixes to be
- saved, in addition to the selection of "None" for each. To dial using
- this new feature, begin as described in the manual by selecting Dial,
- confirm the name selected or change to the desired one, then highlight
- the number you want to dial. The current defaults for prefix and suffix
- are listed at the bottom of the menu. To select a different prefix (or
- "None") or to modify either of the saved prefixes, press F3. To select a
- different suffix (or "None") or to modify either of the saved suffixes,
- press F3. When ready to dial the highlighted number, simply press Enter.
-
-
- Selecting the Modem Port
-
- Be sure the modem port is set correctly before trying to use the dialer.
- The default value of COM1 is acceptable for most installations but not
- all. If PHONEMAN accesses a serial port that is being used by another
- device (such as a mouse) that device may become disabled, requiring you
- to reboot your computer. Be sure the communication parameters are also
- set correctly as described in the manual.
-
-
- Modifications to the WHOIS utility
-
- In this latest release WHOIS can now access PHONEMAN's dialer utility.
- Use WHOIS as described in the manual to locate the name you want.
- Highlight this entry and press Enter to view the entire record. To dial,
- press Enter.
-
- WHOIS presently dials only the Primary Number and the new suffix and
- prefix feature of PHONEMAN will be added in the next release.
-
-
- PHONEMAN Data Files and the archive bit
-
- When a file is created or modified under DOS, the file's archive bit is
- set. When the file is backed by a utility program, this bit is turned
- off. PHONEMAN then cannot locating these files in its file selector menu.
- This version of PHONEMAN now calls the DOS 'ATTRIB' utility when started
- and resets the archive flag on those files that are impacted, specifically
- those that end in *.PBK (the phone book files) and *.PDV (the printer
- description files). This is accomplished automatically by PHONEMAN when
- it is run and has no adverse impact on your computer system. Its success
- depends however on finding the ATTRIB program in your PATH. If you are
- unable to locate your phone/address books or printer description files
- from PHONEMAN and the ATTRIB program is not in your PATH, the archive bit
- is likely the problem. To correct the problem, include the directory
- containing the DOS utility files in your path and rerun PHONEMAN, or run
- the ATTRIB program using syntax similar to:
-
- ATTRIB C:\TASCS\*.PBK +A
-
- in response to the DOS command prompt. Please refer to your DOS manual
- for more details.
-
- SELECTING A PRINTER DRIVER
-
- Several .PDV printer definition files have been included with PHONEMAN.
- These are listed below with the names of the printers they support.
-
- DEFAULT.PDV Use if your printer is not otherwise supported. You
- need to specify the settings of the printer (lines/inch,
- print pitch, etc.) to PHONEMAN before printing but
- PHONEMAN cannot make any changes for you.
- EPSONLQ.PDV Supports the Epson LQ series of printers. May also
- work with other Epson printers if you don't ask for
- an unsupported feature.
- NECP2200.PDV Supports the NEC P2200 printers. May also work with
- other NEC printers.
- HPLASER2.PDV Supports the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet II printer. This
- should also work fine with LaserJet, LaserJet+, and
- LaserJet III printers. Let TASCS know!
- IBMPPDS.PDV Supports the IBM line of printers (ProPrinter, 4019
- laser printer)
- PAINTJET.PDV Supports the Hewlett-Packard Paint Jet printer.
- HPLJETL.PDV Supports the HP LaserJet printer in LANDSCAPE mode. Be
- sure to correctly set margins to reflect this (eg. Top
- =0.25, Left=0.25, Bottom=8.00, Right=10.5).
-
- If your printer is not listed and you think it should be, PLEASE write to
- TASCS at the address above. We would like to include definition files for
- all popular printers. Thanks!

- Quick Installation Instructions
-
- HARD DISK
- There is a hard disk installation utility that is activated by
- typing 'INSTALL C:', where C: is the designator of the hard
- disk you want to install to. If you received this software
- "zipped" or "arc'd" and decompressed to a floppy diskette, make
- sure all necessary files are on a single diskette. INSTALL needs
- all files for installation.
-
- If you elect not to use INSTALL, create a directory called TASCS
- on your hard disk using the command "MD \TASCS". Copy all files
- from the PHONEMAN distribution package to this directory. Copy
- the files PHONEMAN.BAT and WHOIS.BAT to a subdirectory that is
- included in your PATH. If your hard disk is not C: or you do not
- place the PHONEMAN files in C:\TASCS, you will need to edit the
- .BAT files for them to work correctly. If you use INSTALL, these
- modifications should be made automatically.
-
- FLOPPY DISKETTE
- Place all files except READ.ME and PHONEMAN.BAT on a single
- diskette. Place this new diskette in A: and run PHONEMAN by
- typing PMAN at the DOS prompt.
-
- Note that PHONEMAN begins by loading a default data file. If
- your diskettes hold 360 kBytes or less, you may not be able
- to use this default file feature. After starting, press Esc to
- move to the main menu. Remove the PHONEMAN diskette and replace
- with a formatted diskette to contain your data and select FILE
- Utilities. Then load your book or create a new one.
