I. About "Learn Your PC"
"Learn your PC" is a multimedia CD-ROM containing both a tutorial and reference,
this disk constitutes a comprehensive introduction to the world of IBM PC compatibles.
The highly structured interactive text information is illustrated with slides, pictures,
video clips,animation and sound narration. The interactive navigation provides quick
and easy access to all information.
You can work with "Learn Your PC" at three different levels of expertise:
Basic for people who are making their first steps into the world of
computers
Advanced for users with experience in computing who wish to find more
detailed information which explains the underlying principles
Expert this level includes information about signals, data formats,
protocols etc useful for computer professionals.
The learning course is divided into three sections:
Basics in this section the main concepts of computing are explained;
Hardware this section covers all the components, devices and
equipment which constitute a PC;
Software this section covers firmware, system software, programming
languages and applications.
"Learn Your PC" also includes a special glossary which you can use as an
encyclopedia. The glossary provides approximatelly one thousand definitions,
synonyms, related terms and access to even more detailed explanations located in
the tutorial.
Whether you are a beginner or an experienced user, just try "Learn Your PC" and
see how much new and useful information you can learn in a friendly and
entertaining way.
II. System Requirements.
The "Learn Your PC" CD-ROM is intended to be run on a IBM PC compatible
computer with the following configuration:
* 386SX (or higher) microprocessor (386DX is recommended).
* At least 4MB of RAM (8MB recommended).
* SuperVGA videosystem (640x480 resolution in 256 colors), min 512 kB
video memory.
* CD-ROM drive with transfer rate no less than 150 kB/sec (300 kB/sec
recommended).
* Windows compatible Sound card with MIDI interface.
* Microsoft mouse or compatible pointing device.
* Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later.
III. Disk Structure
The "Learn Your PC" disk includes the following files and directories:
read.me - this file
setup.exe - an executable file used to install "Learn Your
PC" into your Windows environment.
LRN_PC\ - this subdirectory contains the information base of
"Learn Your PC" and run-time version of Asymetrix
ToolBook.
IV. Installing & Starting "Learn Your PC"
"Learn Your PC" can be installed automatically by running a special installation utility.
This installation utility creates in your Windows desk-top the "Learn Your PC" group
with an icon related to the title. To run "Learn Your PC" you simply double-click on
this icon.
To install "Learn Your PC" :
* If you haven't already turned on your computer and started Windows, do
so now.
* Place the "Learn Your PC" disc in the plastic disc holder (if required) and
insert it into the CD-ROM drive.
* Open the Program Manager window, click File to display the File menu,
and then click Run.
* In the Command Line box, type the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive, a
colon, a backslash, and the word SETUP (for example, type e:\setup).
* Click OK or PRESS ENTER.
* Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
To start "Learn Your PC" :
* Place the "Learn Your PC" disc in the plastic disc holder (if required) and
insert it into the CD-ROM drive.
* From the Program Manager window, double-click the Learn Your PC icon.
(The icon is in the OpticalSystems group window).
V. Working with "Learn Your PC"
"Learn Your PC" is presented in a highly structured manner and is organized into a
tree-like structure. The root menu is the starting point from which you can enter one
of the three sections of the learning course (BASICS, HARDWARE or
SOFTWARE) or enter the GLOSSARY.
You can navigate through the tree-like structure of the learning course in almost any
direction using mouse sensitive objects on the screen or the control buttons which
are located at the bottom of the screen.
You can move down the learning course by clicking on the mouse sensitive objects.
Objects with an icon will bring you to a more detailed screen with further choices.
Red colored menus lead to the most detailed topics. Black bold-italic hotwords in
the text are linked to glossary definitions. Clicking on such hotwords brings up a
screen with related definition and the option to either close it or go onto further
details.
You can move up the tree using the control button "Upward" located at the bottom
of the screen. You may go directly to any screen using the "Index" and "Contents"
buttons. You may also go sequentially through the learning course using the "Browse"
buttons. The "Details" button which usually appears within a glossary definition you
can provide exhaustive information about a term.
Using Control Buttons
Control buttons are located at the bottom of the screen. To activate a control
button you click on it using the left mouse button.
The Control Panel includes the following buttons:
Exit - quits "Learn Your PC" and exits to Windows.
Help - displays the Help menu from which you can get explanations and hints on
how to work with "Learn Your PC"
Menu - brings you right to the main menu of "Learn Your PC" program.
Back - takes you to the previous screen you have viewed. This is a especially useful
after you have used the "Details" button of a glossary pop-up window.
Upward - moves you up the tree structure.
Browse - these buttons provide a sequential review of the learning material.
Index - displays an alphabetically ordered list of all the topics of the learning course.
You can choose and click on a topic name to jump straight there. You can also use
the quick search facility.
Contents - displays the overall contents of the learning course in a tree-like form of
scrollable list. Clicking the highlighted name brings you to the corresponding screen.
You can also use a special quick search facility.
Level of Expertise - using this button you may select a level of expertise for
working with the learning course. The number of books in the icon corresponds to the
level: one = novice, two = advanced, three = expert.
Sound - these buttons allow you to switch on or off the music accompaniment
(MIDI) and voice narrations for video and animations.
VI. Troubleshooting
Some commonly-encountered problems and their solutions:
1) Problem: You are unable to log onto the CD-ROM drive.
Reason: This is usually due to either the disk or the drive being installed improperly.
Solution: check that:
* the "Learn Your PC" disk is inserted into the drive,
* the disk is inserted printed side up and the drive is closed,
* the drive is switched on and its indicator is active,
* the drive is properly connected.
* Otherwise contact your hardware dealer for assistance.
2) Problem: You have logged onto the CD-ROM drive, but received the message
that the inserted disk is of an inappropriate format.
Reason: The CD-ROM drive device driver cannot read the disk.
Solution: check if your CD-ROM driver is the MSCDEX driver ver. 2.2.
* You can find out this by typing MSCDEX in the DOS prompt.
* Otherwise contact your hardware dealer for assistance.
3) Problem: You click on the "Learn Your PC" icon but the program does not start.
Reason: The disk, the drive or the driver are insta
