As the name suggests, intranets are similar to the Internet, but with one big difference. An intranet is a miniature, private network. Only its members can access it. Schools, universities and businesses are all building intranets. They operate in just the same was as the Internet, but because they don't have the open access of the Internet, they have the added advantage of privacy and security.
