Two important developments have taken us from this early network of the 1970s to the Internet of today.
Firstly, lots of people besides the military wanted to link up their computers and exchange information. But if lots of computers were to talk to each other, they needed a common language. A language for communication, called protocols, was agreed and we still use these protocols today.
