TALKING ABC's
Registering you copy of Talking ABC's:
-------------------------------------
Send $23 to:
Karen Crowther
P.O. Box 892
Mendocino, CA 95460
Include:
Your address,
Phone number (in case of questions),
Disk size (5¼ Double Density, 5¼ High Density, 3½ or 3½HD)
Where you got your evaluation copy (and the company
name on the package if you bought it in a store.)
We will send you the latest version of Talking
ABC's plus the FREE games, plus the technical support
phone number. Disk space permitting, we will send you
other shareware games to try. (So if you can use high
density disks be sure and tell me so I can put more on
the disk.)
Installing Talking ABC's from a distribution disk:
-------------------------------------------------
1. Put disk #1 in drive A (or B).
(3½ disks only have 1 disk)
2. Type A:INSTALL (or B:INSTALL)
3. Answer the questions. The program
will create a directory called
ABC and will copy all the files
to it. When it is finished you
will be able to run the program
from your hard disk.
4. Put away your disks in a safe
place.
5. You should have about 60 *.tsx files,
ABC.EXE, BEACH, BEACH.ABC, RMN40.CGA and
RMN40.GFT in your directory now.
Starting Talking ABC's:
-----------------------
1. Be sure you are on the hard disk.
type: C: (or whatever drive) and press the
enter key.
2. Change to the ABC directory by typing:
CD \ABC
and press the Enter key.
3. Type: ABC
and press the enter key.
Stopping Talking ABC's:
-----------------------
1. Press the <Esc> key to get the
menu.
2. Press the <Esc> key again to
stop the program.
TROUBLE SHOOTING
----------------
1. Garbled sound: Remove programs like Windows Enhanced mode,
Deskview and others that multitask. Note: You can run
Windows in standard mode and Talking ABC's will work fine.
To start Windows in standard mode type:
Win /s
Windows may be started automatically by your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file. You can go into that file and add the /S to the WIN
statement to cause Windows to run in standard mode. If you
do things like receive faxes in the background this might
not be a good thing to do. For most people it will be
fine.
2. Insufficient memory message: Remove TSR's. Reboot.
3. No sound at all. You may have forgotten the second
distribution file called ABCZIP2.EXE. You need to unzip it
to your hard disk. Follow the installation instructions.
If you have files called A.tsx, airplane.tsx etc then you
have already done this. Also, sound does not work if you
start the program while running WINDOWS on a 386 (enhanced
mode).
4. You have an EGA but the program will only run in CGA:
Try starting ABC's like this:
ABC E <enter>
This will force it into EGA mode. This happens a lot on
Tandy 1000's.
5. You type ABC, nothing happens and you have to reboot your
computer.
You probably have a program already loaded in memory that
is conflicting with Talking ABC's. One program that does
this is the Ultrasound TSR that emulates the SoundBlaster.
There may be others. Try this:
Create a plain DOS boot disk with the following steps:
Put a blank diskette in Drive A:
Type: FORMAT A: /S
Type: SYS A:
Now reboot with your disk in the A: drive.
Type: C: (or whatever drive ABC's is on)
Type: CD \ABC (or whatever directory ABC's is in)
Type: ABC
If this fixes the problem then there is something in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file that is conflicting with Talking ABC's.
ABOUT TALKING ABC's
___________________
I (Karen Crowther) support my kids by writing programs. In
fact, my 5 year old, Chris, is the voice on Talking ABC's.
After I wrote Talking ABC's I learned that retail stores do
not want anything on their shelves with a list-price under
$50. (Those "under $15" programs are usually give-aways that
the publisher is dumping - although we shareware authors may
change this.) It seemed to me that parents of young
children are the ones least able to afford these high prices.
Then I looked into the costs of publishing and found that in
many cases the BOXES cost more than the publisher paid for
the program! I have purchased several children's games from
stores. One was great, but the rest were disappointing. My
kids played them for an hour and never looked at them again.
What a waste of $50! (But what a great looking box!)
That's when I decided to distribute Talking ABC's via
shareware. It seemed the fairest way for both my customers
and for me. My customers get to try the program first so
they don't get stuck paying for something their children
don't like, and they get a commercial quality program at a
low price. I don't have to pay the artist yet more money to
design a box, and I get my program out on the market in the
shortest possible time.
If you enjoy Talking ABC's try my other programs, WORD RESCUE
which teaches reading and MATH RESCUE. Both are available
from Apogee at 1-800-426-3123. At the time of this writing I
am about to start another program probably called GRUZZLE
PUZZLES.
Your registration fee is absolutely crucial to allow me to
continue writing games. I rely on your support.
