OCR: If you do not find the solution to your problem here, try consulting the readme.wri file that was installed in Program Manager along with Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat. PROBLEMS WITH WINDOWS Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat is a Microsoft Windows™M program. This means that the program runs in a window, and you can use all the Microsoft Windows™M management techniques to arrange windows on your screen. The one exception is that although the Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat window can be minimized, it cannot be resized. Extra information about the use of Microsoft Windows™M can be found in the Microsoft Windows™M Program Manager documentation and online Help. EYEWITNESS VIRTUAL REALITY CAT RUNS VERY SLOWLY OR RUNS OUT OF MEMORY Eye witness Virtual Reality Cat uses a large amount of your system memory to display illustrations and run animations. If it does not have access to enough memory, Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat will run slowly or produce out-of-memory errors. In such cases, the following suggestions may help to improve the program's performance: 1. Shut down any other applications you are running. 2. Find out how much memory your computer has available by shutting down any open applications and then typing MEM and pressing enter at the DOS prompt (Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat needs a minimum of 4MB of memory). If it has less than 4MB of memory, you will not be able to run Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat properly until you add more extended memory. 3. If you are running Windows™M in Enhanced mode, set up a permanent Windows™M swap file of at least 4096K on your hard disk. Windows™M usually creates a temporary swap file, but this may be unavailable if your disk is full or fragmented. Consult your Windows™M documentation for more information. 4. Run a defragmentation program to clean up your hard disk. 5. Check your CD-ROM drive documentation to make sure that it is MPC-compatible. (An MPC level 2 compatible drive can transfer data from the compact disc at 300K per second.) 6. If you have less than 1MB of on-board V-RAM, then screen display will be slow and video may be jumpy. We recommend that you turn the transitions off in the Options panel. PROBLEMS PLAYING SOUND INTERRUPTED SOUND If the sounds on Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat are interrupted, there are several possible causes. A) You may need to increase the amount of memory available to the MCI sound driver. You can do this by carrying out the following steps: 1. In Program Manager, double-click the Control Panel icon in the Main program group. 2. Double-click the Drivers option to display a dialog box. 3. In the Installed Drivers list, double-click [MCI] Sound. 4. Increase the time to at least four seconds using the slider bar. If the time is already set to four seconds, increase it to even more. 5. Click OK. B) Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat may be low on memory. Refer to the section called "Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat runs very slowly or runs out of memory." C) You may be running another sound-playing application that is disrupting the sound of Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat. This is usually a temporary clash that resolves itself. However, a few applications, such as some screen savers, may remove the sound from all other Windows™M applications. In such cases, close the application while running Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat. DISTORTED SOUND If you hear sounds that are distorted or "fuzzy," the most likely cause is that your speakers are not of high quality. However, the problem could also be due to the software settings on your sound board. For example, if the sound card volume or "WAVE file input" is set to near its maximum level, it will produce distortion, just as it would on a stereo system. To change your sound board settings, consult your sound board documentation. NO SOUND If you cannot hear any sounds at all, make sure that: 1. You have a sound card installed. 2. The speaker is hooked up to the jack on your sound card (and not hooked up directly to the CD-ROM drive). 3. The volume is set to an audible level. The volume may be set with hardware, with software, or with both. Check your sound board documentation for details. 4. During Setup, special system software should be installed - and Windows™M should be restarted afterward to make this software work. If you did not restart Windows™M, do so before attempting to run the guide again. If you chose not to install this software, run Setup again and then restart Windows™M. 5. Test the sounds with the Sound option in the Windows™M Control Panel. If the "test" button is grayed out, then your sound card is not installed properly and you should refer to its installation instructions. If you are able to test the sounds but still cannot hear anything, you may not have the correct sound driver files installed. Find out which ones you have by using the Drivers options in the Windows™M Control Panel and call the sound board manufacturer to check that they are the correct drivers and that there are no hardware conflicts. If your sound board came with your computer, call the computer manufacturer. NO VIDEO PROBLEMS WITH VIDEO If you get an error message when you try to play video, you may not have the correct video drivers installed. During Setup, special system software should be installed - and Windows™M should be restarted afterward to make this software work. If you did not restart Windows™M, do so before attempting to run the guide again. If you chose not to install this software, run Setup again and then restart Windows™M. JUMPY VIDEO 1. You may have old versions of the video drivers installed in your system - refer to the above section on No Video and install the correct video drivers. 2. Your system may be running too slowly to play smooth video - refer to the above section "Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat runs very slowly or runs out of memory." PRINTING AND COPYING PROBLEMS Eye witness Virtual Reality Cat can be printed in greyscale, but if your printer prints only in black and white, you may need to upgrade your printer driver. Call the printer manufacturer or the dealer from whom you bought the printer. You can also print Eyewitness Virtual Reality Cat in color if you have a color printer. Bear in mind that the images have been designed for the best screen resolution (rather than a print reproduction), and so the printout will probably not match the quality you can see on the screen. Also, because the screens are large color pictures, printing may take several minutes or longer. If you have other applications running, try closing them before you print. DISPLAY PROBLEMS Eye witness Virtual Reality Cat looks best in 256-color mode. If your computer has been configured to run with fewer colors, the image will be degraded and performance will also be affected. Running the product with more than 256 colors selected, such as the 65,000-color mode, will not result in any enhancement of the image quality, but will result in a performance penalty.
