Most mammals have fur or thick layers of insulating fat beneath the skin, and birds have feathers. Fur and feathers both trap an insulating layer of air next to the skin, keeping the animal warm. If an animal raises its fur or feathers, the insulating layer becomes thicker, and even less heat is lost.
