With its excellent hearing the serval detects mice in long grass. It has very large ears in relation to its body size, so the ear holes on the skull are enlarged. The serval kills creatures with its canine teeth; these bite through the back of the neck and sever the spinal cord. To be able to do this, the serval needs strong jaws, even for killing mice.
