OCR: INDIAN TEMPLE LION T HIS CARVED FRIEZE of a lion and elephant is from the medieval temple of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa in eastern India. Parts of this temple, which is dedicated to Tribhuvaneswar, or the "Lord of the Three Worlds," are more than 1,400 years old. A soaring tower 130 feet (40 m) high dominates the huge temple complex. Every surface of this tower is covered with intricate carvings of gods, men and women, plants and trees, flowers, and animals. The images are thought to represent the struggles in India between the religions of Buddhism, which grew out of the teachings of Gautama Buddha (563 BC-483 BC), and the more dominant Hinduism.
